Today's Soundtrack

The Gun Club

I'm in a mood, and this is how I'm feeding it. It's the Gun Club. If you like blues or punk, or blues and punk, you may find them to your liking.

The Gun Club came from LA punk scene in the early 80s. What they played was called punkblues, cowpunk, roots rock, and sometimes deathrock. Leader Jeffery Lee Pierce early discovered that having a band meant free drinks, a problem that would lead to his undoing, and his early death. Pierce wrote for a punk music fanzine in LA that had grown out of a reggae fanzine, so he was exposed to both genres, and traveled to Jamaica to review bands. It was this experience (probably), that led him to take punk to it's roots in a way that other bands had not.

Pierce met Kid Congo Powers (who left to play with The Cramps before the Gun Club cut a record, and later played with the Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds) outside a Peru Ubu show (a seminal early US punk band), and they decided to start a band. They called it The Cyclones, but the lead singer took off after one show. So they changed the name to "The Creeping Ritual," and Pierce took over vocals. The rest, as they say, is history. The band broke up a couple of times, reformed with new members - sometimes with past members - and had a constant stream of excellent and well-known producers, but never a "hit." Still, they have influenced generations of bands

Pierce experienced failing health due to a lifetime of drugs and drinking (a cautionary tale, boys and girls!), and died of complications from a stroke while visiting his father in 1996. Before his death, he did a good bit of accoustic work, played live with the Bad Seeds a number of times, and wrote an autobigraphy that was sharply critical of many of his former bandmates.

Enjoy. Notice I couldn't let this go without a cover version - today it's Credence Clearwater Revival's "Run Through The Jungle" by

That was finally awesome! I had to reboot my computer so that my browser would finally load it...sorry it took me so long to comment!

Anyway, I quite enjoyed it and am going to actually take another run through it right now! That surprises the heck out of me...I normally don't care for this type of music.

Excellent postage!

It was awesome for 25 years before it was awesome for you p: I'm glad you finally are privy to it's manifest awesomeness, too!

Nerak 18. December 2008, 22:44

It's not my fault I'm a young'un! :D

Hmmm. I've never dyed my hair...

Nerak 19. December 2008, 05:32

Nor should you ever. I always should.

You never should. Nor should anyone.

"I mince like a Greenwich village thespian"

  I think it's time to add honey in your tea!

noah counte 20. December 2008, 23:52

I can't believe it, but I don't recall the episode. Maybe if I saw it. It's been a long time since i watched Seinfeld, though...

Honey?!?! It's blasphemy! I like my tea strong and untainted by sugars and creams. Except masala chai, which really can't be made without sugar and cream.

ellinidata 21. December 2008, 00:21

"Honey?!?! It's blasphemy!"

only a man with a deep voice can appreciate "manly tastes!!"

I take only black coffee but my voice is not deep yet! p:

Vivi was watching an episode two night ago
where Jerry is sleeping in the train and when he opens his eyes the passenger next to him is without his clothes and yada yada...
I don't recall watching that episode :frown:

I might one day become a millionaire in a Seifeld trivia,

even reading the episodes (which I did this past20 minutes)it given me the giggles!

I saw them at the Twilight Room in Dallas in what must have been 1983 or 1984 -- think it was 84. I wasn't a big fan or anything, never had any of their albums, just happened to see them as part of the weekend hitting the clubs thing. It was a tiny venue. The lead singer was wearing a green khaki shirt with the sleeves cut off and was wielding a machete for most of the concert. The bass player was this weird Elvira type chic with long black hair and a long dress and who kept looking either up at the ceiling or down at the floor through the entire concert.

Very good concert. This is the first time I've listened to them since them -- so thanks so much for the blast from the past, Matt.

I love that Seeqpod player. Very fast loading.

noah counte 23. December 2008, 12:48

The older I get, the more my entire existence is a blast from the past. I'm glad you got to see them, Edward. I saw them in probably 83 or 84 in Louisville, and was scarred for life. Patricia Morrison played bass for them in 83. I don't know who was drumming.

You are right about Seeqpod. I keep thinking the RIAA is going to punt them, but it keeps on working.
