Nicolaki,
you warm my heart with the bright colors, the soft lines, the amazing face expression!
I am spotlighting this one!
thanks for sharing!!

Angeliki 9. September 2008, 21:55

:hat:
new page!!!

(long story on this one!! Matt, Ed, Amir.... got used to it!)

I love LOVE your work!

if you have a chance see my photo album "steps to beauty" :D

Nicolas Borgsmidt 9. September 2008, 22:14

Angeliki what you describe liking was exactly what I liked to do  Bringing the persons to live. Concentrate on every fold in their dresses...see that the hair get´s just right and the shadows in their faces didn´t steal anything but underline the facial expressions

And now I´ll examin your steps to beauty

Angeliki 9. September 2008, 22:20

it is wonderful to know one who understands what I exactly mean!
I was just telling Pam,
painting it feels like letting your mind dip in your soul and express through your hands

Nicolas Borgsmidt 9. September 2008, 22:42

I saw your painting dear. :eyes: wow
I tried to comment, but couldn´t  I mailed my comment to you. but maybe I could put it here:
I don´t understand. Why can´t I comment on "steps to beauty". I clicked and clicked but no. nowhere to comment :frown:
Anyways:
It was so great to see you bring the girl to live. A perfect detail is that she´s in the middle of a tiny movement. Enough to add a little action to the painting so it doesn´t stiffen  Her facial liveness and the plasticity of her shoulder is yummy. It´s classical good craftmansship. Well done angeliki

love Nic

BTW have you seen the painting Pam made with old cars stacked on a junkyard. It´s magnificent

I wish I could paint and be like you describe. It sounds so harmonic.

Mostly I discuss with my painting. "what" ? "what do you want...more red...why"? "HEY!! where are you takin´ me huh"? and stuff like that

Angeliki 9. September 2008, 22:49

you are not only a "canvas master"
you are a word master too!
thank you very much!

I talk to my painting, my plants you can tell I am a talker!

Pam is a gifted painter,
I am delighted that for the past two days she started painting again ! :hat:

Nicolas Borgsmidt 9. September 2008, 22:53

Thanks Angeliki

Great news about Pam :hat:

scott cumming 9. September 2008, 23:54

it's groovy nic, really cool. it is shocking in a soft way like a fascinating dream that lingers in my mind through the morning. i want to go back to the dream and investigate it further.

your description of talking to the work made me laugh... because i do that to the degree that i wonder if i am going insane sometimes when i am really working, but i am too entranced to worry about that.

allan, i think expressed my take on meaning, for the artist it's like alice saying "when i use a word it means what i mean it to mean." {wonderland).

i am trying to be conscious of the unconscious, not trying to explain it. there's an enormous difference looking into the unknown as a discoverer rather than as a journalist or scientist both of whom have to know what to call things.

good job. good luck with the windows.

Cynthia 10. September 2008, 00:39

Fantastic work Nic! It opens up the doors for so many different types of conversation as art should do! You are truly a gifted artist. Besides the beauty I see within each stroke, the first thought that came to mind was the millions of hungry people in the world. You deal with the subject (for me) within a multitude of levels.

Nicolas Borgsmidt 10. September 2008, 09:28

@ Scott
I was like in a dream too  In a giggeling way, I thought it was funny to bring these persons together and innocently see what would happen  And from that moment, the painting took over and got a life of it´s own ... like a dream :D Every addition was called for and I humbly tried to follow..but sometimes it was like "WHAT"?? :eyes:

Talking to the painting even continiues to the street sometimes :left: Especially when I´m torn from the painting proces. I usualy set the alarm on my cell phone, if I have to go shopping. And ofcourse the alarm most often sounds in the middle of a tecnical/emotional problem  The I keep talking to myself, in a low voice, all the way to the mall :jester: Once I even stopped and said out loud : "This is not good, at all" !! and then turned and went back home and made some corrections
When I´ve painted for many hours and need to go out, the outside world seems almost unreal p:

I never know beforehand what the balance of power will be between the painting and myself. Sometimes I´m really in command :knight: Every stroke is like guiding a dog. Do this do that. Then it´s "YES" and "OH YES". In that case I add something, stroke by stroke, and the colours are nut sucked out of me, as the case is when the painting runs wild p:

The windows are comming on fine, thankyou. I´ve had to use a planing machine in order to make them open and close, without any obstructions. The spotwise lack of paint on the window frames have made the frames grow because they´ve sucked up a lot of water. The weather has been good dryingwise. Soon I´ll be able to add grounder and paint to the thirsty frames.
Glad you´re back Scott

Nicolas Borgsmidt 10. September 2008, 09:42

@ Cynthia
Thankyou so much Cynth
No matter how the proces has been going, either been the master or the slave of the painting, there´s always the conversation/communication afterwards. I LOVE THAT! Communication between creative persons, I find so beautiful and life fulfiling  You see what you see, because you bring your mind and your soul into it, Cynth  Seems that you got a beautiful mind
My own insitement to make this painting, was a very vague memory of my mothers problems with anorexia. But I´m too happy at the moment, so I couldn´t make it too serious and all of a sudden, the painting took over and became, in my view, very funny and then I just followed
But art has proven many times, that a specific subjective issue becomes universal when it´s described in paintings, lyrics, music, novels etc etc. Ppl have a lot in common

"... painting it feels like letting your mind dip in your soul and express through your hands.."

This is so true. I haven't gone into the studio yet this morning but I know I will be surprised at what I worked on yesterday. It will be another 'did I do that' moment.

I have decided I can't go without my coffee and Opera in the morning but I will only be on briefly in the morning and late evening. I have to have some kind of addiction don't ya know.

scott cumming 10. September 2008, 22:23

"When I´ve painted for many hours and need to go out, the outside world seems almost unreal"

yep

Nicolas Borgsmidt 10. September 2008, 22:33

@ Pam
I really know THAT feeling

@ Scott
On the way to the Mall I fell SO alienated

Eliane a/k/a Elly 14. September 2008, 01:26

Quite a thought-provoking painting, Nic. I notice the bowl empty --is that correct? The little girl's hair is so pretty. The predatory woman's demeanor is haunting and horrifying to me. My eye moves from side to side of this work. It is a bit disturbing to me.

Lovely shadows, how you put movement into the sky and land with them.

Nicolas Borgsmidt 14. September 2008, 18:49

@ Elly
I admit. It´s provoking. Sveral says so  Lemme give you a hug You can see the bowl is empty :hat: It took me a whole day to paint it right :eyes: I have a thing with hair. I like to paint and draw it
In the beginning I wasn´t aware af the disturbance of the painting. It was just a kind of playground to me. Trying to attack a problem with humour, but along the way it bacame a bit serious.

When I add the shadows it´s like using clay for modelling. That´s when I really feel I form the caracters

Eliane a/k/a Elly 16. September 2008, 03:01

Edward Piercy 17. September 2008, 01:16

I see some sort of strange dominance to it. The woman on the left excercising control over the woman on the right.

I also noticed the background/sky pales toward the edges. Nice touch.

Congrats on finishing your work.

Nicolas Borgsmidt 17. September 2008, 19:58

Yes Ed. The crawling woman seems to have some sort of fearful respect for the young girl.

I used a foam roller for the sky colour. Gives a smooth surface  and together whith knives, palets and bruches for the other areas it gives a good structure indivdualism

Thankyou. I´m SO glad ít´s over and done with :D

Babs 19. September 2008, 22:29

WOW! What a fascinating picture. The hungry eyes of the woman, the downward stare of the child. Is she or isn't she? And which one will eat what's in the bowl?

Nicolas Borgsmidt 21. September 2008, 00:09

I´m sorry Babs, can´t help you with your questions. It was just a thought...Images passing by p: :D. If you read some of the answer to the comments above...you might get an idea why i painted it. But I´m not quite sure myself. sorry  I think the bowl is empty and supper might be served soon..not sure :left: :D
Welcome here BTW

Babs 21. September 2008, 05:35

Or will supper be served at all? Food issues are known to start at a young age, and since you mentioned your mother's problem with anorexia, perhaps the child in the foreground with the empty bowl is the precursor to the hungry woman? :D Anyhow, it's a hauntingly, beautiful picture, and the colors and lines are beautiful.

Nicolas Borgsmidt 21. September 2008, 08:23

My parents "mental" food fights ofcourse gave me some obstructions, but I came over them. I like almost all food and I love ccoking :chef: There´s some greed in the pic, isn´t there. I mean. The crawling lady is fit and healthy. She isnt too thin or anything and still she might want to take the girls supper

scott cumming 21. September 2008, 19:27

and in this example/puzzle she will be craving something that doesn't even exist. that's a vision of hell. just thinking out loud...

i just can't resist sometimes... and nic i know you will only be grateful...
we don't come over things, we overcome them...
lmao

not at you... just a little giggly today. :troll:

Nicolas Borgsmidt 21. September 2008, 20:18

God bless your good mood Scott. And yes..I´m greatful :D
Tomorrow my canvas will be dry and ready. Then I´m going into drawing mode.

Babs 23. September 2008, 02:52

Scott, the woman does look healthy, but she looks like she wants something else.

I finally have a free day away from class tomorrow - I am thrilled! I plan on getting my beads out and working on amulet bags and a tapestry.

maisha 27. September 2008, 09:44

WOW!..................i wont say more.........

Nicolas Borgsmidt 27. September 2008, 16:48

THANKYOU! Maisha........I´m so glad that young ppl like my paintings too  I paint for everybody  Thankyou again

Aniruddha 4. October 2008, 01:58

Dear Nic , after long time I m visiting ur blog. I saw and tried to understand the emotions oozing from eyes of a woman as well as a little girl. It is very hard to believe that anyone can put the expressions in her eyes without showing her full face.. U have done it marvellously with soft edges. To me , the mother of a child is ill , not taken food for whole day and night. Child is very much attached with mother , she understood and could feel the mothers pain . She also realizes the anxiety of her mother. In response she tries to cook some dish with her little hands can do. She is requesting her mother to get up and eat something which she has prepared for her. The mother of a child has become so weak that she has to make efforts to getup. Her eyes show full of pure love towards the child as well as sympathy towards her because her child has prepared with her ltl hands . . . .not meant for cooking food at her age. However she is fully satisfied with the gesture and undestanding capacity of her child. A painting depicting universal emotions between mother and a child. At the background u can see green field . Which shows pleasant liveliness stating that mother is slowly but recupping , child has emotionally grownup and ready to shoulde responsibilities to come in the life. :D a ANI

Nicolas Borgsmidt 4. October 2008, 09:22

Hi Ani.
wow. You really absorbed this painting. When I read your comment and was at the end of it, I felt like...hey tell me more :D. I´ve got so many fine fine comments, but I´m not closer to a specific reason, why I painted it. But I had such a great feeling inside while doing it
The painting puzzles me still. It´s hanging on my sittingroom wall. It still "speaks" to me as if we´re communicating still. For the first time in a long time I could step out of the picture and observe it at some distance. I haven´t been goood at doing that before. I was like completely inside the painting without stepping back from time to time. It´s like cooking and adding a lot of spices to the dish, without tasting along the proces and just taste it in the end. I "tasted" much more this time as I moved along :D

Aniruddha 4. October 2008, 12:58

 wine wine share the joy of feeling contended . Ani

Nicolas Borgsmidt 4. October 2008, 18:02

Yes friend. A good thing

Aniruddha 4. October 2008, 23:05

Henar 6. October 2008, 12:46

Wow... I love it! Really disturbing, though. But I like that it makes you think about the story behind it... Why is the woman dragging herself? She appears to be angry about something... What´s inside the bowl?... Very interesting, Nic. And also the colours are so vibrant and so violent... I love paintings/images which make me think. Congrats!

Nicolas Borgsmidt 6. October 2008, 13:33

Hi Henar. So glad you like it  The woman is dragging herself because i wanted to make her movement make a lot of folds in order to paint ...folds. Folds in her dress and on the table cloth. It recuires a lot of light and shadows and a lot of neighbor colours inside very small areas.
The theme itself made me think a lot along the way...but it still puzzles me too :left: :D
