It´s never too late to live in the present

The old Tugboat

Veteranship:
The old tug boat ”Bjørn” has been situated in the inner harbour in front of the old shipyard in Elsinore, for a number of years. It has been build up piece by piece by a group of enthuthiasts.
The leader of the building team thinks the team will be ready with the restauration next year in august. At that time “Bjørn” will be a 100 years old. The old steam machine is tested and proved working.

Yes indeed. I thought their efford needed a little attention. They´ve really worked hard. The team contents of ppl from all layers of society. A lot of firms and organizations has put money in the project

I just love old machines like this - and the thought of having it fully restored by the time it turns hundred is a nice thought indeed.

Was it originally operating in Helsingør, or in København?

nopanic 13. September 2008, 07:26

@ Tilla
Please do. Ol´ leatherface can take it :psmurf: :D

@ Allan
Yes. Just like them old cars eh?! I think it´s a nice thought too

It was originally operating in Randers by tugging big boats in and out of the harbour. At times it was used as an icebreaker in the harbour bassin

SittingFox 13. September 2008, 10:56

That is very cool! (Pretty sky too! :D)

Cynthia23 13. September 2008, 13:11

Cool Nic! I love reading about this bit of history. Was it Fulton or Rumsey that invented it? It is very interesting history! Glad to see this boat being renovated.

nopanic 13. September 2008, 15:10

@ Adele
Yes it was a beautiful day. And you can see Kronborg castle in the background

@ Cynthia
Thanks. I´ve tried to look in wikipedia and google and couldn´t find the inventor...sorry :frown:

Cynthia23 13. September 2008, 15:34

OH, I did a children's puzzle on this subject once for a toy company. Here is a neat link to its history: http://www.steamboats.com/museum/engineroom1.html  Hope you find it interesting. Anyway, there is controversy over who was first. hahahaha ... This link is only basic history.

nopanic 13. September 2008, 17:50

Jeez Cynthia. I got completely carried away by reading. It´s a great plus for this post  What a lot of info  Thankyou so much

Cynthia23 13. September 2008, 23:47

No problem, Nic! Glad you found it interesting.

momable 14. September 2008, 01:12

HOw interesting. That is quite a lot of workmanship, 100 years and still there!

nopanic 14. September 2008, 18:54

@ Cynthia
You bet

@ Elly
I felt the same way :eyes:

wickedlizard 15. September 2008, 18:06

are you going to do some nip and tuck procedures??? :eyes: :faint:

nopanic 15. September 2008, 18:08

P: :D

wickedlizard 15. September 2008, 18:13

you are????? :left:

nopanic 15. September 2008, 18:15

Both. First i nip..then I tugggg :D

edwardpiercy 17. September 2008, 01:08

That's one cool little boat. What will be the function of the newly restored boat? Will it operate as a tug again? Or will they make it into one of those floating restaurant boats? A floating museum?

nopanic 17. September 2008, 20:00

My guess would be that it will be shown in action under the next Baltic Sails event in Elsinore...tuggin´ some other veteran ships in and out of the inner harbour...who knows?

edwardpiercy 17. September 2008, 20:05

Hmmm. I see.

Even just a floating bar would be cool.

They have some boat-bar-restaurants over on Lake Coeur d'Alene in Idaho. I've seen them, but I've never been out on one.

nopanic 17. September 2008, 20:11

We have a lot of those Bar - ships during the summer. Mostly from Germany and eastern europe

edwardpiercy 17. September 2008, 20:13

I can't swim. But I can drink.

nopanic 17. September 2008, 20:16

..and you can´t be sure that it´s the boat that rocks P:

edwardpiercy 17. September 2008, 20:38

True.

I'll just blame it on the boat.

nopanic 17. September 2008, 20:53

Everybody does!

I_ArtMan 20. September 2008, 20:01

the tugboat is a perfect analogue to human individuality... modest in stature with giant reserves of power... untold strengths.

good idea... turn it into a bar... then it will be a shocking simile.

how like the tugboat bar am i
no longer moving mountains of ships
but resting... bobbing on a liquid sea.

nopanic 21. September 2008, 00:17

 Hey Scott. So great them words of yours. You´re absolutely right. Bjørn looks very humble, faithful and almost human. He´ll run perfectly on whisky or vodka or whatever..

I_ArtMan 21. September 2008, 02:02

bjorn... that means bear right?

nopanic 21. September 2008, 08:24

Yes Scott That´s right. But it´s a common nordic scandinavian name too

Mickeyjoe_irl 29. September 2008, 18:01

Nice to see people who want to perserve something that could have so easily been scrapped.

nopanic 29. September 2008, 18:11

That´s right Mickey. I feel that way too

SqueakeyCat 8. December 2008, 01:18

nice to be able to see an old tug still out there and working

nopanic 8. December 2008, 12:41

Yeah! 100 years old and still going strong :eyes:

SqueakeyCat 9. December 2008, 03:10

good for the TUG

nopanic 9. December 2008, 10:48

Indeed

SqueakeyCat 9. December 2008, 22:09

"knocks on wood" that the little tug hasn't gone to the "tug boat in the sky" place like so many others have. even while still able to work.

nopanic 10. December 2008, 14:51

I´m sure It´ll remain here for another 100 yeas

SqueakeyCat 10. December 2008, 15:21

good
