It´s never too late to live in the present

Yvonne

It finally happened. Something happened on the canvas!.
I´ve been hoping that doing a portrait for a collegue, of her little son, would kind of jumpstart my own private painting. But that didn´t happen at all. All the ideas became mental colourless and I felt I had to start from scratch.
I grounded the canvas a lot of times, using a broad spatula, in order to make a very smooth surface wich would be easy to draw on. While sparteling I saw an interesting rough struckture occur, being independent of the normal canvas structure. Some of the random lines gave me the image of a woman standing, with her arms crossed. The image is not my own invention. It was as if I knew this woman or had seen her before. I suddenly remembered I saw that posure from a photo in a newspaper of some actors in a theatre, on a stage waiting for instructions.
The idea was to start the painting with this woman. I´ll call her Yvonne. Like the actors, she´s a woman waiting for me, the artist, to invent a life or at least a sequence on the canvas, wich she will be a part of..

Her position and lines and the posure was given by the random structure of the grounding

I added some colours to seperate her from the background

Finally I added shadows to her appearence to make her three dimensional. Furthermore I´ve placed her in a doorway.
She´s actually entering the painting…waiting on the doorstep. What´s going to happen around her, I don’t know yet. But I feel confident that Yvonne will help me sort things out. It´s her life, after all.

Like the expression on her face says: What are you waiting for? I`ve been always looking after this moment! Give me life....

Nice post Nik  I hope Yvonne will be satisfied too :D

nopanic 4. December 2008, 22:40

Thanks Darko. You´re right, she looks a bit impatient :left:
Even fictive women have demands p:
I hope she´ll accept the situation I put her in :D

gdare 4. December 2008, 22:44

Don`t let her wait too long :D

nopanic 4. December 2008, 22:45

 I won´t :insane:

Stardancer 4. December 2008, 23:00

Waiting (im)patiently.

:D

(Quite nice, Nic.)

nopanic 4. December 2008, 23:03

I sense sister solidarity here
Thanks Star. Ive never exposed a painting in public at this early stage. But I do it to push myself forward p:

Stardancer 4. December 2008, 23:12

You may not know this, Nic, but you also are an inspiration to people such as me. When you show a completed painting, you show us what we might also accomplish. When you show one in its early stages, such as this one, you show us how to accomplish it. It might not even be about painting, but could be about anything.

All accomplishments begin with a single step.

Thank you for that.

nopanic 4. December 2008, 23:34

Aww Star

You put great philosophy to my humble tryings. Thankyou so much. It´s good fuel in this proces.
I feel we´re a lot of persons inspireing each other here on Opera

Cynthia23 5. December 2008, 01:03

WOW! NIC! Thanks for this piece. I like it just the way it is! It is grand! I look forward to seeing more also if you really decide that it is not finished.

Shaunak 5. December 2008, 01:46

Wow that is an amazing portrait...

And has a great thought to accompany it...

sanshan 5. December 2008, 04:41

I feel like that woman right now. It's hard to step through that doorway because that canvas is so big and scary. :worried:

Zaphira 5. December 2008, 05:26

I think it's interesting to hear what's going on in the head of an artist when he does what he is good at.

Good luck with Yvonne. I am sure you'll make some very interesting surroundings for her!

ricewood 5. December 2008, 07:21

I have a thousand ideas. I'll keep 'em to myself, though

Zaphira 5. December 2008, 07:47

I am not curious.
I am not curious.
I am not curious.

@ Dacotah
Hi Carol

@ Cynthia
I follow you Cynth. I often feel the same way when I paint: The need to stop at an early stage. But I find a great strength in being focused and determined. I made the decision that she has to have surroundings...period! :D

@ Shaunak
Thankyou  I´m doing my best. In this case I might be easier to move on...I hope :left:

@ San
Don´t worry San. I wouldnt allow her to step out into the big nothingness. Noone deserves that! I promise that I´ll put as much substance into the project as possible!
I know now that Yvonne has a daughter at around 9 years old.
Yvonne is a single mom. As you can see, she enters the canvas through a regular open door. I´m not at any point getting psycodelic..i try to stick to realities as much as I possibly can!! Everyday dramas might contain fantastic stories and fairytales...that´s what I´m looking for....SO...she´s standing there waiting in a kind of doorway. I think I´ll create some thought of house around the door. It´s the main door seperating the outside from the inside...hmm she´s standing in the doorway to a house...her house most likely. Despite her normal appearence she contains something very special...will have to find out what it is.

@ Tilla
I might need a woman perspective on her later..I´ll ask you then p:
I´ll give her a nice house I think

@ Allan
Don´t be protective. You can mail your ideas to me :D P:

@ Tilla
You´re a woman, arent you?!!
OFCOURSE YOU ARE CURIOUS p:

Zaphira 5. December 2008, 12:56

Okay, I admit it. I am curious. But a wise person told me it is only healthy. P:

Cynthia23 5. December 2008, 13:01

GOOD! Nic, I look very forward to seeing her surroundings.

nopanic 5. December 2008, 13:20

@ Tilla
I agree kitten

@ Cynthia
So do I! p:

Cynthia23 5. December 2008, 13:42

hahahahahaaa P:

Dacotah 5. December 2008, 13:50

Hi Nic.

nopanic 5. December 2008, 13:51

@ Tilla
Sure it is Tillie

@ Cynthia
 :D

ricewood 5. December 2008, 15:48

No one can use my ideas - except me. Nicolas can't for sure. It's his project. I am just being inspired.

RuneSB 5. December 2008, 18:36

Admit it! : it's the constandt "nag nag lady" in person !!!

nopanic 6. December 2008, 00:49

@ Allan
You´re not much of a help my friend :irked:

@ Rune
 She´s NOT like that, believe me pal.
She´s very wise in a quiet and old fashioned way. Her posure is just one of awaiting

ricewood 6. December 2008, 08:50

I'm not much of a help. No. Honestly I didn't think you needed any.

Could the random structure of the painting somewhere on the canvas give you a clou as to what she was coming from or going to through that doorway?

When I look closely at her, she looks quite impatient or in another way dissatisfied. Could that be true?

My ideas were based on more doorways. More people - each with their own agenda. Non-connected people, alienated from each other and life. Always in transit. From the inside of a painting to the outside. People not knowing of the other's existence, stuck in a two-dimensional painting as they were.

Does this help? I don't think so.

wickedlizard 6. December 2008, 11:15

I'm glad to see she doesn't have the rolling pin in her hands... :left:

Can't wait to see how this turns out!

nopanic 6. December 2008, 12:15

@ Rune
I´ll give you that she look a bit like a naggin´ type. I´ll change that! I don´t want her to be. Both Allan and Isabel have the impression that she´s a bit of a dominating type..hmm I definately have to try to change that  I want her to be strong, but not a dominating type :D

@ Allan
Hmmm..let´s see what you´ve got: You mention the structure. I´ve been looking at it again..closely. All I see is a wall like rough structure..and so be it. There will be wall around the door ofcourse. She is standing in a house..on the doorstep, looking out. You mention more doorways. I´ll add more doors and windows. The structure acuires just that! You mention more people...I´m with you there too. But I really want the people to be connected. in a kind of web or span..not sure. Will have to work on that p: Thanks a lot Allan

@ Isabel
I´ll smoothen and soften her up, I promise p:

ricewood 6. December 2008, 15:50

My pleasure...

SittingFox 6. December 2008, 16:25

I'm intrigued!

nopanic 6. December 2008, 17:21

@ Allan
:D

@ Adele
I´m glad!

momable 7. December 2008, 22:26

How cool is that! The painting even looks great as is.

I enjoy how you showed the transition from one dimension to three.

You are so super-talented!!!!!!

momable 7. December 2008, 22:35

Never having painted on canvas, why is it necessary to "ground" it?

Sounds like you are punishing it

nopanic 8. December 2008, 00:18

It´s a long story about grounding of canvas. In my case it´s because I used an old painting I wasn´t too satisfied with.SO i had to ground the canvas again in order to make the old painting disappear :D And thick grounding takes some of the roughness of the canvas...yeah sometimes I feel like punishing the whole d**n painting :irked:

BUT until now things are good :D

studio41 8. December 2008, 04:27

Even fictive women have demands :ko:

:ko: LOL Nic  neat post...

what do you mean "grounded" the canvas?

I'm glad to see she doesn't have the rolling pin in her hands...

edwardpiercy 8. December 2008, 23:04

Well I have no reservation about contributing my own ideas or anything else that sucks.

So here's my idea.

Towards the upper right of the painting, within a square about 4X bigger than Yvonne's rectangle -- a flying saucer set against the same background as Yvonne. Or perhaps a slightly differenct color.

And then keep the rest just like it is -- empty tan space.

Curious to see your final result!

nopanic 9. December 2008, 11:02

Sorry Edward. I´ve been moving on. Soon I´ll make a post that describes what I´ve decided.
Your idea is wonderful but lightyears away from my fantasy

edwardpiercy 9. December 2008, 11:19

Drat!

:D

Well, still curious as to the final result. I will stop back by.

ricewood 9. December 2008, 11:37

I am sure that Nicolas is persuing his own thoughts. My guess is that none of our ideas have been good enough

nopanic 9. December 2008, 13:57

@ Edward
I´ll look forward to your return and comments Ed

@ Allan
That´s NOT true Allan. You´ll see that I´ve used some of your suggestions in the painting. You´ll see in my next post p:

ricewood 9. December 2008, 16:15

I'm amazed. Flabbergasted. I was sure I was right.

Now I am really looking forward for this, as if I weren't already!

nopanic 9. December 2008, 21:04

Good  :D

DBabbit 10. December 2008, 03:37

Hm. A single mother to a 9 year old little girl. Maybe she's waiting on the little girl to come in for dinner, or get off the bus. Or she walked into her daughter's room and saw a total mess, which is why she looks impatient of course, because she's tired. Now there's this mess, which reminds her of her life, and she's tired of having gotten nowhere fast.

How's that for a woman's perspective? :D

gdare 10. December 2008, 07:20

 I guess this is something you`ve been through? :D

nopanic 10. December 2008, 14:59

@ Babs

I like your perspective Babs LOL

momable 11. December 2008, 06:54

Thanks for explaining. Looking goood!!!

nopanic 11. December 2008, 12:33

Thanks. You´re welcome, Elly

DBabbit 12. December 2008, 23:19

gdare - Was it that obvious? Actually, no. My son was quite the little neat freak, and though it's been tough, I wouldn't say my life is a mess.
