N+ DSi: DS Browser Speed Comparison Video! (with surprise ending)

, , , , , , , ,

Here's that video I was talking about (finally uploaded). It really speaks for itself. There's a fun surprise at the end :3 ...Enjoy!

Revver Clip is higher quality:

But the Youtube Clip has notations!!:

Brief notes:

This comparison shows the new Opera developed Web Channel on the DSi vs. the older Nintendo DS Browser that Opera developed for Nintendo some years ago - something that I was fortunate enough to be first to see in Seattle during the Opera 9 launch event. I wrote about it here. The new Web Channel is downloadable from the DS Store. Once downloaded, it becomes a part of the main menu of the system. There may be a cost associate with the download - that I don't know for certain for the US, etc., but as you can see, it's definitely fast and in my opinion well worth it. It's confirmed FREE!

Charles Schloss 23. February 2009, 16:47

DotEd got a video that is spreading around the web

Spook 23. February 2009, 16:51

Shouldn't we update the post? After all, Espen has confirmed that the browser WILL be a free download

.ed 23. February 2009, 17:07

Updat.ed!

it's really racking up the views.. :insane:

Geoff Girardin 23. February 2009, 17:12

Will it be free forever? Or will it be a trial like with the Wii version?

Espen André Øverdahl 23. February 2009, 17:52

It will be free. I've hard nothing about a trial version or anything that limits it.

Spook 23. February 2009, 17:57

I guess what G-Off means is if it will be a free download during the entire lifespan of the application or will it be like the Wii version, which was free for a limited time and then began to be charged for, not so much as a trial version.

Espen André Øverdahl 23. February 2009, 18:01

I think what I tried to say is that the browser will be a free download. Period.

Edit: I've hard nothing about changing this, like on the Wii. Personally, I hope it remains free forever.

Haavard 23. February 2009, 18:06

Yes, it is free, and will remain free. This was confirmed in Japan, and I can't see it changing other places in the world. I think Nintendo recognizes the importance of having a free browser available. It is kind of expected on today's devices and phones.

Spook 23. February 2009, 18:08

Then how come the Wii version is not free anymore?

Espen André Øverdahl 23. February 2009, 18:26

I have no idea.

Tony G. Martinez Mora 23. February 2009, 19:07

what about storage,is it 514 megabytes like the Wii?
Btw how much does the Ninendo DS Browser cost, and where could i find it?

Joel Luther 23. February 2009, 20:55

DS Browser costs $30, is available for the DS Phat and DS Lite, and should be available at most electronics retailers. There was a rumor a while back that they were being pulled from shelves, but I checked with a rep from Nintendo and it turns out that was false...

The DSi has 256 MB internal flash storage, with support for high-capacity SD cards, up to 8 GB. The DSi browser is/will be available as a free download from DSiWare.

Tony G. Martinez Mora 23. February 2009, 22:28

Would there be a gameboy/color/gba virtual console for the DS shop?

Anton 23. February 2009, 23:07

speculation says: possible

.ed 24. February 2009, 00:43

i expect there to be, newtonyic.

.ed 24. February 2009, 00:55

i added additional notations to the youtube version.

It was never supposed to remain free forever. They made it clear from the start that it would only be free for a few weeks.

DrLaunch 24. February 2009, 13:03

Being an early adopter isn't always a disadvantage.

I know that, but then how come the DSi version will remain free and the Wii version won't be released as a free download again? I mean, the DS version I get; you need the cartridge for the memory pack and that ain't gonna be free...

abiding99 25. February 2009, 02:08

How were you able to connect? I keep trying to accept the user agreement and get an error code: 313404

DrLaunch 25. February 2009, 10:26

You'll need to configure your WiFi via the DS or DS Lite browser's settings.

Tony G. Martinez Mora 5. March 2009, 19:14

can you zoom in and out while browsing, also tabs, any?

Tony G. Martinez Mora 5. March 2009, 19:15

you might have firewalls stricted

Charles Schloss 5. March 2009, 22:04
