The Very Best Of John Barry

So, back again with another original LP by John Barry. This one, on Polydor, is one of the most significant Barry’s own work released during the 70’s. This compilation features titles reinterpreted by John Barry himself. Some tracks like « We Have All The Time In The World », « Diamonds Are Forever », « A Doll’s House », « The Adventurer » and « Midnight Cowboy » were reissued on the Lounge Legends series (Universal Germany). The James Bond themes sounds more dynamic, drummy and pop oriented than the original movie soundtracks,. « Strip Drive » (from the rare 1976 « Americans » LP) sounds pretty jazzy with a taste of Schifrin’s groove. A real good alternative to discover John Barry for the first time.

Various Artists - Champaign A Go-Go volume 1

So here it is, my first home made LP & 7’’ compilation. I was so lazy the last months … But i enjoyed to record these tracks this last days before to going south … A short explanation … The first track from Alain Goraguer is taken from the 1970 original movie « Sur Un Arbre Perché » featuring Louis De Funes & Geraldine Chaplin, a brilliant psyché-pop sound collage, unfortunately this score was never released (just one track or two on a comp). I’ve included François de Roubaix Répétion - from « L’Homme Orchestre » - because the original movie version sounds more powerfull & dynamic than the official score reissue, includes also original Louis De Funes dialogues ! « Voyages » by Michel Polnareff is amazing, between choruses with additional grooves. Luckily this title was reissued with, of course, a better sound than my original LP. Bernard Estardy’s « Super Angoisse » & Hervé Roy’s « Pop Vibes » - Telemusic 5 & 10 - features brilliant drums & melodies. I bought over 3 years a double LP « Bandes Sonores Originales Des Grands Films Français », a fantastic found with these two titles by Jacques Brel + François Rauber and Philippe Sarde. « Patrick Jerk » by Les Pros, from the Boum Bomo singles collection, this was unknown to me until whoops let me it to discover… Variations N°3 is a pure french 70’s rock experience & Resonance sounds more disco feel. Amazing too is the cover « 2001, L’Odyssée de l’Espace » (2001 Space Odissey) played by Christopher John & His Orchestra, funky groovy at hell ! 2 Quiet songs and easy pleasures are « Je t’aime … moi non plus » by Paul Mauriat & « From Here To Eternity » by Engelbert Humperdinck, this last one was sampled by Kinobe on their title « Slip into something more confortable », so here is the original Decca issue. And of course, a recursive theme & fave of mine, but sounds quiet different, more « poppy » in the background. This is « Sans Mobile Apparent » played by the Filmstudio Orchestra Di Roma and directed by Massino Campigli. And finally, a TERRIFIC groovy introduction to « A Flavour of the New Avengers ». I’m so pretty curious about all library tracks used in the New Avengers TV series. I’m searching since years all the credits used along the entire series. I never found any information ! I’ve just one idea, to buy the complete DVD set and extract any incidental music … Ho, before i forget. All tracks are running with their originals sleeve covers in Itune & Windows Media Player 9, cause i bought a new computer with … Windows XP ! ! Until now i was under Windows 98 ! ! Oldies but Goodies … So, next week, i’ll drive to the south. Searching about the missing sun … Holidays ! ! ! ! ! ! !

Joe Berluck & His Erotic Voice : Interview

Last summer, i did a post about Joe Berluck’s LP. Something very special to hear and to feel ! He came through Sounds Of Champaign (Side-2) and stopped by, the time to gave us an exclusive interview. There are so many easy-compilation on the market today, i wonder why nobody thought about Joe Berluck’s songs. It’s a miss…
So, here is the following interview…

1- Hello Mr. Berluck, thank you to be with us and to allow this interview for Sounds Of Champaign (Side-2). Can you tell us which was your musical course ?

I was the first DJ in Europe, I mean who worked with a Transportable Disco-Bar (year 1962).

2- Who are the musicians accompanying you for your album "The Erotic Voice Of Joe Berluck", how did the recording occur and are you still in contact with them nowadays ?

They where studio musicians, after the music was made, I put my voice on it.

3- Had you affinities with other artists of the Palette label on which you were in 1970 ?

Yes, Will Tura and others.

4- For which kind or style of music have you a preference, what are you listen to at the moment. Also have you a vinyl collection ?

No, in 1971 my place whent in flames and I lost 43.000 singles and LP’s. The music i prefer, all kinds of music if it is good but I have a little more preference for romantic style.

5- You were also DJ for a show which was aired on radio RTL at the time (if I’m not wrong). What kind of souvenirs ?

I did the Record Beat Show from Radio Luxemburg in Belgium – Holland – Germany and as a DJ I went all over Europe.

6- On which LP or Single can we find your cover from "My Way", and "It’s Been a Long, Long Time", (a duo with a splendid orchestration & beautiful vibes) ?

"My Way" is on the LP Mfp (member of EMI) AM026-97072 and "It’s been … " is a single Palette 2021028.

7- The covers of your LP’s & Singles are a "treat" for the amateurs who we are ! Is it you who thought of this "girl-concept" or it was suggested to you? Did you know this woman on the main cover of your LP ?

It was suggested and i never saw those women.

8- How was your relationship with producer Roland Kluger? Was this a common will to work together ?

I only saw him once.

9- What are your projects at the present time and how to have any access to your music nowadays ?

The compilation i send you if i find someone to bring it out because I don’t have the money to do it.

10- What did you think of blogs and websites which propose unreissued vinyls for free download (like yours!) but are also outlaws opposite the record labels & the right-owners (like you ! !) ?

What can I do, I never received a penny and now i see that some websites asked 66$ for a single of Joe Berluck !

Thank you very much Mr. Joe Berluck to have agreed to answer these questions, as well as your kindness.

P.S oh, what is the title from track 15 on the CD, because it's not credited, seems to be a very nice christmas song !

That’s my best one, it is "White Christmas" and "Silent Night" also on a single "Palette 2021-032".

Greetings and who knows… Maybe we will see us in France or elsewhere,
Also greetings for all your members,

Joe

John Barry – Le Trou Noir ( The Black Hole ) OST

This Lp has a special story, where i found it and why i love it. Some people knows that i’m a special Barry addict. I’m collecting any records in any form all music composed by John Barry since years until now…And of course, among all, are the original LP’s. I saw the movie just more than a year ago and was hypnotized by the main recursive theme, a loop of deep strings. Very near to an other spacey score performed by Barry at the same period (1979) ; Moonraker. I really love titles like « six robots », the quintessence of Barry’s involvment into deep inspiration. Until now, i just had a poor 128kbps mono rip of this soundtrack. Because this is the only official LP that came out in 1979 through Walt Disney’s Buena Vista Record label and was never officialy reissued as vinyl LP or CD. Just 2 bootleg versions were in circulation, the first one paired with « The Last Valley » score but in mono ! The second one, an italian bootleg from 1999 paired with « Howard The Duck » also including tracks from « Star Crash » and « You Only Live Twice ».
Seems that Disney had problems with the copyright of « The Black Hole » soundtrack or lost the original masters ? Maybe it explains no official reissue of the score until …now ! Apple, i don’t know how, have the rights to a digital reissue only avalaible via Itunes ! More than a reason to rip this beautiful score in 256kbps with his related artwork. I’m just curious about a clean issue of this soundtrack cause my vinyl is sometime saturating.
Oh ! And for the story, i found this one in a vinyl shop near Lille, in France. It was a fabulous day ( the last week-end ) with 5 fabulous guys ! What a day, i swear ! ! So, this is especially dedicated to my friends Whoops, Agent-Double, Wesm, Manu & Calmos. BUGA ! ! !

Roger Roger et son orchestre - Chappell Mood Music - Vol.24

Back again with a library vaults, without any doubt one of the best Roger Roger record i’ve listen to. Divided in several parts ( Strings for dramas - Barryesque -, banjos for dixies & charlestons, amazing drums & breakbeats, crime soft jazz ...) this Chappell Mood Music is one of the best patchwork of Roger’s possibilities. He’s able to practice different atmosphere in one record, but with the same fluent quality from the first track to the last one. Beware, there is a TERRIFIC breakbeat on « Jerk Machine » and fine drums on « Dialogue » !

Stanley Black - Film Spectacular III

If you’re into spying atmospheres, big orchestras, musical comedies & choir « a la Bacharach », then this record would probably recorded for you & your aural pleasure…Better than i can do or write, here are precious informations about Stanley Black & writed by the excellent spaceagepop website.
… « A child prodigy, Black was active on the British music scene for over sixty years. He studied piano and attended the Matthay School of Music in London, and one of his first compositions won a competition sponsored by Melody Maker and was performed by the BBC Orchestra when he was just 12 years old. By the time he was 18, he was a working musician, playing with British dance bands such as Joe Orlando, Howard Jacobs, and Lew Stone. He often played with American jazz musicians such as Benny Carter and Coleman Hawkins during their visits to England, and recorded a duet version of "Honeysuckle Rose" with Hawkins. Black developed a talent for transcribing music that made him a hot prospect for popular dance band leaders. He could listen to a recording and sit down and transcribe a dozen or more parts by ear, producing a dead-on copy of the original arrangement. Bandleader Harry Roy hired Black and paired him with Norman Yarlett in a double piano feature act, going so far as to change Yarlett's name so he could bill them as "Black and White." The group toured South America in 1937, and the trip made a profound impression on Black. For the rest of his life, Black enjoyed playing and promoting Latin American music. Black enlisted in the RAF early in World War Two, but he was discharged after less than a year due to ill health. He returned to Roy's band for a short time, but left to pursue work as an independent conductor and arranger. By 1944, he had become director of the BBC's house dance band, a job he held for nearly eight years. He became a mainstay of British popular music, appearing nearly every day with the BBC band.

He left the BBC in 1952 to join Decca Records as a staff conductor and arranger, but he remained active with the BBC for the rest of his professional career. He stayed with Decca until 1958, and averaged four albums a year under his own name, in addition to hundreds of uncredited work backing up singers and conducting smaller combos. Many of these albums, including an all-Lecuona album,Cuban Moonlight were released in the US on the London label. He also worked in the British film industry, arranging and composing soundtracks for nearly 200 films between 1946 and 1975. He served as musical director for the Associated British Pictures Corporation between 1958 and 1963. Among Black's credits are the score for Cliff Richards' British beach movie, "Summer Holiday," which won an award, as well as the theme used throughout the 1960s for Pathe newsreels, a staple of British movie-going experiences. He also composed the theme songs for numerous radio and television shows, most notably for "The Goon Show." He spent his last working years as a conductor, leading the BBC's Northern Ireland Orchestra in the late 1960s, and appearing frequently at "Pops" concerts. He was an enthusiastic proponent of popularizing music, commenting once that "Serious music shouldn't be pompous. 'West Side Story' should be in the same program as Beethoven." Although most of his own albums feature popular music, his one Grammaphone Award came in 1965 for his recording of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol.

Black was highly respected by his fellow musicians for his expertise and efficient working habits, even when deafness set in in his late 60s. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1985. He was also a Life Fellow of the Institute of Arts and Letters, and Life President of the Celebrities Guild of Great Britain. Exotic Percussion is the album Space Age Pops fans are recommended to seek out. It's an expertly produced recording, typical of London's Phase Four period, featuring an excellent selection of such space age pop standards as "Miserlou" and "Caravan" in loud, brassy, percussion-stuffed arrangements »…

Fist Of Fury - Original Soundtrack -

Here we are, after some relaxing exercises and since my vinyl deck is unable to play at right speed and constantly any LP or 7inch rpm, i’ve decided to take this opportunity to reissue some previous vinyl rips that were avalaible at my first blog, only reissues for those have dead links - maybe a lot - i’ve to check it.
Fist of Fury, an amazing bunch of sounds, screams ( !) and music. Bruce Lee as a human being, and as a cantonese lover. More atmosphere and less music, then more kung-fu fragments of fights, fidelity and duality. An original japanese release (TAM) for your aural pleasure and excitement ! The benefit of this reissue is that this record is now encoded at 256 kbps ( and not at 192 kpbs like before ).
