Uele Kalabubu et sa Tribu - Afroground (1968)

I RATE YOU THIS EXCELLENT vinyl LP that was provided to me by my friend Greg. An awesome taste and flavour of african grooves, a pure afro-exotica trip ! They seems to come from Congo or Gabon, but i’m not sure reading the LP label. Few, very few infos to find around the web. A fantastic hypnotic track like ‘Afro-Disiac’ is avalaible on the Pulp Flavor sampler « La Guêpe - volume 2 », "Matata" sounds fantastic too. I’m not pretty sure about the 1968 dating. But seems to have any connection with Garcia Morales, Ralph Benatar & Tony Perdone, all belgian guys ( ?) and involved, for some, in ‘El Chicles’ and in different records label like Blue Elephant, Biram (this one), RKM or Topkapi. Just for fun, i listened to this record with an added reverb effect and enhanced bass on my main PC, and it sounds pretty good like african new-wave ! ! I rate you to use a real Hi-Fi system to obtain the best result. So, here are 2 zip files, the original & the ‘enhanced’ version. Enjoy this experience !

Exact ! J'ai vraiment CRAQUE sur Afroground. Effectivement j'ai encore pas mal de matière première dans mon labo et de plus je suis assez motivé en ce moment. Que demande le peuple, j'vous l'demande ! wink

Please could you tell me how I get to check out these amasing records, is their a download section

Anonymous Tuesday, January 1, 2008 4:39:40 PM

Jumaane writes: Thanks! I just downloaded this. To shed some light on the origins of the group... I know nothing about them but they sing in Swahili, and in the kind of Swahili spoken in the eastern part of Congo, northern Zambia, Rwanda, Burundi, maybe Kenya... so that leaves out Gabon where nobody speaks Swahili unless they are Congolese immigrants. And the only place where they speak French too is Congo/Rwanda/Burundi... There's another group that reminded me of Uele Kalabubu: Soseme Makonde, who released a 7 inch / 12 inch by that name (b-side: Manzara) in the mid 70s in France through EMI; the sleeve says it was recorded in Nairobi and the lyrics are Swahili, but the composer of the song (whose picture is on the back) is Greek!

Hi Jumaane,

Many thanks for the complete informations about Uele Kalabubu. I did'nt known these connections & the specificity of the languages. Happy new year 2008.
