Manny Albam & Ernie Wilkins : THE DRUM SUITE
Tuesday, 28. March 2006, 19:08:09

Here is a real swingin jazz roots LP, sorry about the surface noises, but it’s a really good old record from the year 1956. I don’t know a lot about the background of « The Drum Suite », so i’ll give here infos that i’ve collected on the web. I was especially surprised by the track « Chant of The Witch Doctor », with a recurrent pattern that give a hypnotic taste and a touch of exotica feelings to the title. 4 drummers are just enough for this record ! This is a pure trip into the swingin bebop jazz from the 50’s. Anyway, i suspect that track one was sampled by Funki Porcini, to be confirmed . Of course, you’ll find a lot of drum breaks inside !
« The collaboration between Manny Albam & Ernie Wilkins about « The Drum Suite » LP is one of the best examples of percussion exotica, moving beyond simple gimmickry with well-crafted arrangements. »
« Wilkins recorded several albums as a leader for the Savoy and Everest labels in the '50s and '60s, including a highly respected 1955 septet with drummer Kenny Clarke. In 1956, Wilkins teamed with arranger Manny Albam for The Drum Suite, which flouted tradition by using four drummers simultaneously. »

This is a different cover from the original - is it a French release, maybe ?
I know many excellent exotica on RCA Victor got a French release (Piano Bar by Eddie Cano and 5 albums in the Stereo Action series come to mind) but I never spotted this one...
Great album !
