Stories of my photos.

Do cameras lie ? Do we care ?

A few days ago I was talking with a friend about photography.
At a certain point, my friend told me that our cameras lie. We look for the beautiful, and we don't see what's wrong. Well, he's right. Bot not totally. Sure, we look for the beautiful. But we see what's wrong. And I care. We care.

This is one of my favourite spots. How I see it. And how other people see it.

I'll be seeing you.

It depends a lot on what we are looking for. So much of life is ugly that it helps to focus on the beautiful, the unusual, and the interesting. Sometimes that means focusing on the trash, other times it means shooting past it.

Orlando, you've made a great post and arisen a problem very important to me.
My friends don't understand how I can be fond of photography living in the "pithole of the Universe", where half a year everything is just white, and another half is not very colourful either. There's no sea in my place, most of the forests are cut for the wood, the river is dirty and the total number of sunny days in the year is less than 100.

My husband's always saying: Why do you lie with cour camera?! Why do you try to find and show the least beauty if there's no gorgeous things around?! Why not to show the truth - ugly and dirty buildings, drunk men, broken streetlights?! ... and so on and so forth...

They don't understand me in this point! I really SEE that beauty that I try to catch with my camera, and really try NOT TO SEE ugliness around!

So.. My cam doesn't lie, and I don't care!!! :D :D :D

Zephirine 4. March 2009, 15:25

Mmmm.. I think I agree with Ann's husband. Maybe we don't want to show the real things around us 'cause we don't like 'em, it's a way to refuse the reality... are we dreamer looking for perfection?? :left:

As far as I am concerned, if Orlando would have shown us the "other side" of his poetic shots in his 365 album I would have gave :star:s to them, too 'cause, in my opinion, a photographer mustn't live in a "dreams land".

Last but not least, I think I'm lucky 'cause around me I can't see a lot of ugly things... there are only a few places where I could find garbage: my father's workshop or my neighbours' old house!!
Maybe it's time to be a real photographer and going in those place with my camera!!

Some years ago I worked in a touristic agency with clients: helped to chose the destination, the hotel, the air company and so on. I set good relations with my clients,so after the tour most of them called on me and shared their impressions and experience. There was one peculiarity.Sometimes people were happy and delighted with simple and rather cheap tours, and vice versa found a lot of blackpoints in awesome and expensive ones.
The same is here..

Anna 4. March 2009, 17:18

I mean, if you want to see the Beauty of the world, you see it :D If you want to see ugly things, you see them...
And as far as I can see any member of our great 365 group is able to see awesome and wonderful things around! And, Zeffy, look at your album and see that I'm right
:D

This is a very nice post I like it a lot so many stars for it. :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: Sometimes I do think, we all of us do hide a way from the truth,we realy do not want to face it. We have so much beauty but behind the beauty there is a backyard. One of the most beautiful places I know close to my home is a very good exampel of human action and no brain. No thought unless there is money coming out of it.The area is So beautiful Nature is recovering growing slowly back and every time of the year is a bit of a fairytale to look at. I will never eat the apples from the trees highly puluted or vegetables growing in the soil highly puluted. It does not show it looks clean It is the BEAST.
Let this post be a project let us show some backyards Let us think twice and try to put the beast into beauty.

Orlando I like this a lot

Thank you, my friends.

Beauty and Ugliness are two sides of life. The decision to show one of the sides instead of the other is up to us. For me, it's not really a question if the camera lies or not. I think it doesn't lie, the Beauty exists and I like to show it. It's my reality, it's how I see it, and everybody can see it too.

Most of the time, people have such a life that if nobody brings Beauty to their attention, they won't even notice it's there to see and enjoy. So, I choose to show Beauty; it's one of my ways to make the world a little better.

But after the friendly discussion I had with my friends, after my post and after your comments, it got me thinking. Many of the ugly sides of life are man made. And they are deeply affecting our world. Now I'm wondering what kind of world will be left for my kids, and their kids. And I'm worried.

So, I made a decision. Most of my photography will continue to show how beautiful our world can be. But, from time to time, I'll show Ugliness and Wrong. And this will be a photographic challenge, because those photos will have to be even better, they need to have punch, strength, they have to make a vigorous statement. To be beautiful.

Maybe more web photographers like me will follow. And maybe one day this change of attitude will give a little help to the world become a better place.

Many is left to be said...

Orlando I’m honoured to have you as a friend. you have done one of the best post I have seen in Opera community!

Yes cameras don't lie! We lie, and I'm best to lie!

But isn't nice that even in a dirty place we can find some beauty?

I have so many questions for those people that make those things happen...garbage for everywhere...old things in forests, pollution on soil...well much and much more.

If you don't mind i will do a post on my blog similar! It's my tribute for a better world!

:star: :star: :star: :star: :star: for that idea Orlando.

MrLeffe 9. March 2009, 16:39

Orlando 10. March 2009, 00:49

Thank you for your kind words, Zé and Leffe.

I would be very happy if you both decide to make a post with this such important matter. My post achieved its goal: I draw your attention to the problem, and now I know that we share the same point of view over the matter.

Both of you have more people reading your blogs than reading mine, so your post will be more effective than mine.

With this small gestures, we will help to turn the world a little better place !

Orlando, and other dear 365 friends, I am so delighted that Anna referred me to this wonderful blog and the heartfelt comments made by you all. I am slow to start, but glad to join your "Chaosland" project. Another 5 :star: for Orlando!

I won't just go to my husband's studio for this project! We have a beautiful little creek near our house that is often seen as a dump by people who clearly don't have a clue what they are really doing. (And of course, we have a beautiful planet of whom the same could be said!)

Orlando 12. March 2009, 23:02

Wow ! Thank you, Froggie!
To tell you the truth, I was in doubt if I should post this or not. But I thought, what the heck, it's my blog and a few will read it. So, here it is. And I'm really glad to see that what we do to our planet also matters to my friends. "Chaosland" project, as far as I'm concerned, will not end here. As I said above, from time to time "Chaosland" will appear on this blog. I hope it will appear on other blogs, too. :D

Zephirine 13. March 2009, 11:15

I have been told that Picasso said, "We all know that art is not truth. Art is a lie that makes us realize the truth, at least the truth that is given us to understand."

Anna 17. March 2009, 07:03
