Opera Mini from the inside

Domain administration

, ,

I'm quite often on the road there days, and find myself without regular computer access. I do have a cellphone, but it is hardly a substitute when it comes to editing documents, etc.

Having said that, with a great browser on my phone, lots of things are indeed possible. Today, while sitting on the train and checking my webmail, I got a message that one of the accounts on a domain that I manage is exceeding his quota. This means that unless I fix it, he is without email. The problem is that I will not have PC access for another 2 days. What to do?

I logged into the Web interface for the domain using Opera Mini, and updated the email quota for that account in 1 minute (or less  )

Having a browser like Mini or Opera Mobile is, of'course, what makes this possible, but it also makes a good point against .mobi. The domain has a Web interface, .com and that's it. And as of today, without any extra work, I have access to it from the desktop, from my phone, and if I ever get one, from my Wii.

I should't have to develop, install or maintain a separate .mobi domain, just because I want to access the net on my phone.

In any case, I feel like the coolest admin, doing these things while on a train. It almost makes of feel like I'm in Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon.

Opera Mini - Go to Ikea

I just moved into a new place and I'm slowly filling it with useless things, like furniture and such. Using Opera Mini I can now search for tables, chairs and other exciting things, right on my phone. So I'm sitting on the bus, thinking to myself "I would really like to have a table and chairs.." (Silly thought, I know, but currently I lack these things.)

After looking through the selection you can even check out when IKEA is open and go there to get your stuff. Or you can call them, right from Opera Mini, and tell them what a nice table they have.

Pretty cool for a little web browser!

Get Opera Mini and go to IKEA!

Opera Mini Use #3

This project is hereby changing status from ambitious daily to ambitious whenever-i-get-around-to-it

Nevertheless, for your viewing pleasure (and mine  ), the third use of Opera Mini: WebMail.

I use SquirrelMail on my server, and it works great. With Opera Mini I get all my mail on the go, wherever I go. This is of'course very cool. No further explanation needed.

Oh, and for those that use Gmail, well that works very well too.

So, get Opera Mini and get your email!

Opera Mini Use # 2

Read books on the go, and carry an entire library with you!

Project Gutenberg offers thousands (!) of free books whose copyright has expired in the US, and now I can read all of them using my phone and Opera Mini. The titles include:

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
The Notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci — Complete by Leonardo da Vinci
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
The Time Machine by H. G. Wells
The Best American Humorous Short Stories
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
The Devil's Dictionary by Ambrose Bierce
The Complete Works of William Shakespeare by William Shakespeare
Dracula by Bram Stoker
The Canterbury Tales, and Other Poems by Geoffrey Chaucer
The Trial by Franz Kafka
...

That's not a bad library for my little phone!

Currently I'm reading The Art of War by Sun Tsu (screenshot)

1001 uses of Opera Mini

Today marks the start of a rather ambitious project. Sound off the horns and raise the banners high!

Starting today I will post 1 different use of Opera Mini every day. Please note, I will take time off on weekends to reflect over this project and my life outside the Internet. I am also relying very heavily on my imagination, which may or may not be a good idea. Only time will tell.

Without further delays and introductions, let the project commence!

Use #1:

While cheering for Italy during the World Cup I was screaming "Forza Italia!", when I was told that Forza Italia is the name of Silvio Berlusconi's political party, and not a football cheer. Without getting up from my couch I fired up Opera Mini, punched in "Forza Italia" into the Wikipedia search, and lo and behold, it is indeed the name of Italian National Party led by Berlusconi. However, before I hung my head in shame, I read on; "The party's name seems to originate from a football chant with the meaning 'Forward(s) Italy!'". Take a look: Forza Italia.

So we were both right

Opera Mini: blogging tool

,

Mobile blogging is very exciting. In fact, being able to use your phone to post to your own blog, comment other people's blogs, participate in forums, etc, opens up a whole new dimension of the Internet.

With this in mind, I'd like to announce that this entry was posted by using Opera Mini, Opera's lightweight alternative to the full mobile browser.

I just love the possibilities; the Internet in your pocket, even on low-end phones.

Blogging from Opera Mini - yes please!
