What a Farce!

New MMS Handler

Today we deployed a rewrite of our previous MMS handlers which were reponsible for receiving MMSes from people and placing the images and text in blogs and photo albums.

While the previous handlers were working satisfactory for a number of users, they were highly specialiced pieces of code, and were very difficult to extend and maintain. This posed a problem when we found ourselves wanting to support the more esoteric MMS formats many of the large mobile operators outside Norway are using.

Therefore, I've spent some days rewriting the MMS handlers, and while trying to maintain the old functionality, I've been adding support for operators such as Sprint (US), Vodafone (NL/NZ/US), T-Mobile (UK/US) and quite a few more.

The handler is now capable of guessing which parts of MMS emails are wanted content, so it should also support more formats which we haven't encountered yet.

However, it is impossible for me to test with every possible operator out there. Hence, if uploading images doesn't work as usual anymore (or if it has never worked), I'd very much appreciate an MMS sample with both an image and some text sent to oleko@opera.com, so that I can support your operator's MMS format

Update July 18th: Added support for Sprint USA multiple images and Telenor Sweden.

This better work.Testing. 1 2 3.

Just added support for Vodafone UK's ridiculous ( ) format based on your MMS. I didn't see an image in the MMS though. An MMS with an image and some text would be appreciated, so that I can make sure the image upload works flawlessly.

Thanks for the message. It should be supported now. Do you by the way have any troubles uploading images?

Alas! My phone is so old it cannot take pictures (sadness!). Anyone interested in helping out the Yum with a new phone may PM me at WillYum, I'll accept direct payments or you can pay shipping and send your phone directly to me! (Please be sure to include battery charger and that the phone is fully charged upon arrival)

And to top it off, I can't even test the fix because my phone service was turned off... but as soon as I get it back online I shall!!!! Many thanks.

Ideas?

By WillYum, # 13. July 2006, 07:11:45

Uhm. Not really. If you could send the exact same message to me at oleko@opera.com, I'll try investigating. But it should work if it were of the same format as the previous one you sent me... :worried:

I have tried to send pics to my photo album, but no luck so far. Is operator "Tele2" supported?

By Obi1, # 13. July 2006, 11:17:37

avatar
Should be. I use it myself (Tele2 Norway that is---there might be differences in other countries). However, last time I tried, it took about 10 minutes before the image arrived.

photoxxxxxx(at)mx.opera.com?
Please help!

By Obi1, # 13. July 2006, 13:35:26

Ah, yes. GIFs aren't supported at the moment. :frown:

You must send the MMS to the literal address "photo+xxxxxx@my.opera.com". I.e., with the plus sign.

Doesn´t work for me, the picture and the subject line shows up on the page, but not the text in the mms. Using Telenor sweden. Gonna send you a message olekasper, appreciate if you can take a look at it.

Telenor Sweden support added.

By olekasper, # 18. July 2006, 09:28:47

avatar
BTW: how can i add a subject line, so my post wouln't get named as "MMS via Email" ?

By Ramunas, # 19. July 2006, 09:28:54

avatar
That depends entirely on your phone operator. In many cases you can't set it yourself.

If you send me an example MMS, I'll use the first sentence in the MMS as subject.

By olekasper, # 19. July 2006, 11:25:37

avatar
Ok, that would be nice. I'm sending an MMS to you right now.

By Ramunas, # 19. July 2006, 12:26:20

Ole, thanks for all the hard work...especially on the "sick, sick, sick" Sprint MMS; and probably the sicker, sicker, sicker multi-image mail too. That was an unexpected extra and it's working great.

By tinhoy, # 19. July 2006, 23:58:16

Ole, Argh!!!! What am I doing wrong, man?

http://my.opera.com/WillYum/blog/show.dml/366103

I sent a message through to my blog but it came up blank.

Any ideas?

Should I send a message with a special word in the subject? Do I need to bribe the monkeys, any ideas?

WillYum, I'm really at a loss as to what is the problem with your mails. They work OK when you send them to me first. But what's the deal with the "Re:" in the subject line and stuff?

You could always send me another sample, although I'm not sure if I'll be able to figure out what's wrong.

By olekasper, # 26. July 2006, 09:24:02

avatar
Great, now i can write a subject for the post, but could you do that the first sentence which is used for title would get removed from main post?
