WINDOWS AERO vs. UBUNTU BERYL

, , ,

UBUNTU LINUX 7.04 Feisty Fawn won the Readers' Choice Award for "Best Linux Distribution" recently. The Desktop Edition distro is very simple and is much the same as that of the Server Edition. I just saw in YouTube another lung-busting hooray for Linux in terms of desktop effects (by installing Beryl and enable this) as against Windows Aero of Vista.

IS OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE REALLY BETTER?YES! THE FILIPINO CAN!

Not really a fair comparison. An added component vs default obviously the added one will win. If you want to compair default to default Windows wins hands down. There are probably similar programs for Windows so Windows wins because its default beats the crap out of Ubuntus default and it has add ons that match beryl.

Beryl comes as an option on the Mandriva Linux 2007 installation disk (don't know about Ubuntu), and runs nicely on my two-and-a-half year old laptop (1.6 GHz processor, 32 MB graphics memory shared out from the 512 MB of RAM that's installed). My 1-week-old desktop computer with a 256MB nVidia graphics card and 512 MB of unshared memory won't run any of Vista's 3d graphics.

Oh - and did I mention how much it cost to upgrade from Mandriva 2006 to Mandriva 2007?

To my opinion Aero and Beryl both look great.

It's fun to have your desktop do tricks, but what's the point, really? As a practical desktop for getting things done, fluxbox kicks both their asses.

Compiz Fusion is going to be installed by default in Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon.

I don't see how 'Beryl' is any better than Aero. For starters those sliding, squishing effects would definitely get annoying after a few minutes, they already seem annoying to me watching them.

Also the cube is annoying. Wow I can see THREE apps at once, all warped in perspective! Not that Aero is a lot better in this respect since you only see all of one, but you can see the corners of the rest and normally spot the intended window easily. I think it's quicker than Beryl would be. Though best solution IMO would be have something like IE7 Quick Tabs.

Transparency is utterly useless in both cases.

And what the hell is that flinging of the icons round the screen? How is that remotely useful or good looking?

PS I'm not particularly a Windows advocate, Vista has dozens of flaws, including with Aero, but all this raving about Beryl is stupid, it's not any better.
