The cherry blossom season of this year has gone. Cherry-blossom viewing is one of the biggest event for Japanese. Everyone must go to see it.
upper: from "Byousoku 5 cm" by Shinkai Makoto.
middle and lower: cherry blossom around my place.
Cherry blossom usually doesn't seem pink but just white, though it is often painted as pink like the upper picture.
This kind of cherry tree is called Someiyoshino
Most of cherry trees in Japan are the clone from one original of Someiyoshino produced by crossing in 19th century.
So Someiyoshino can't be grown with its seed. All of Someiyoshino are grown from cuttings.

Shinkai's latest movie is Byousoku 5 cm
(秒速5センチメートル)----a chain of short stories about their distance
It was released this spring in the theaters and now DVD has also released. It's got good reputation in Japan. I watched it at a theater in Miyazaki and was impressed much. Same as always, Shinkai discribes the sentiments by using close up of various stuffs or showing commonplace sceneries and skies. They are very lyrical and effective. We must enjoy the awesome background art. Unlike Oga Kazuo or Ghibli, Shinkai made all of it with computer painting though, it is beautiful as well.
Both of these crossing scenes are from this movie.
