fall festival, gohei, 霧島神社、御幣, mikoshi

November 3th is a autumn festival day in Totoro every year. They carry a mikoshi--portable shrine--- from Kirishima shrine and go through the town. It's a typical style of Japanese village festival.
upper : Kirishima shrine ---霧島神社
middle : mikoshi---portable shrine
lower : paper decorations called "gohei" are hung both sides of the streets all over the town
Take a look at my October 24th post. You can see the same thing in Yotsuba&.

...
Let's see the amazing backgrounds in Yotsuba&.
in a restaurant, Yotsuba finds Torako. The rattan chairs are well drawn.

a festival day. The paper decorations are hung on the street. They are going to the shrine.
They wear festival costume. Houses are drawn very well.
Yotsuba is watching "mikoshi"---carriable miniature shrines---
It's drawn amazingly detailed, if you look closer. No CG but all hand drawn.

Dahon, mikoshi, LOUIS GARNEAU

"Yotuba&" has some particular attractions.
One of them is its beautiful background.
Azuma Kiyohiko wrote
Azumanga-Daio before Yotsuba& and it was also popular. We see not many backgrounds in it because it mainly shows the charactors and their dialogues.
In Yotsuba&, we can see a lot of background that are drawn so detailed. It shows Azuma's awesome technique. I guess they spend much more time in drawing the background than the charactors. Those who have tried to draw bicycles with pen can imagine how much time it takes and how advanced techniques is required. Look closer the perfect bicycle.
upper: Asagi's bike is LOUIS GARNEAU. Azuma draws even each of the gears of derailleur.
middle: Torako's is Dahon. Her car is FIAT Panda. She seems to like imported goods.
lower: Fuka is a high school student. Japanese high school students usually ride bicycles to school.
