The Web That Wasn't

Well, a true gamer (i.e. not me) would have known that the Screenburn Arcade closed yesterday. So, no gaming for me today. I stopped by a talk by Alex Wright (Author of Glut: Mastering Information Through the Ages) called The Web That Wasn't .

He talked about Vannevar Bush’s “As We May Think” essay (widely acknowledged as the work that essentially invented hypertext) and he also talked about the work of Paul Otlet. The general thrust of the talk was that a great deal of work in the late 19th Century prefigured the Web that we now know. There wasn’t a whole lot new for me in this panel, but someone who hasn’t studied hypertext or the history of computing would have loved it. Wright’s book sounds interesting, and I might have to check it out. He writes for the New York Times as well, so keep an eye out for him.

Sounds like a great book. I just added it to my Amazon wishlist.
