Opera Portable

I tried to customize OperaUsb to version compatible with PortableApps from http://portableapps.com/
I compiled small .exe program, which is supposed to open Opera from subfolder. It runs operausb.exe but this application look for Op.com in root folder of my disk.

From operausb.exe window:
Loading the last position file
The last position was "F:\"
The actual position is "F:\"
The same position, nothing to do

And alert:
System cannot find "Op.com". Check if teh filename is correct and try again.

I have no idea why it doesm't know where it is. Maybe it is possible to pass some attribute to operausb.exe with a path to folder where Op.com is?

What do you think?

You have to start Operausb.exe in the same folder as op.com is, please don't create other startprograms

It's not so easy... there is is no problem with portableapps, but there is something else.
Operausb.exe in same folder (opera920en) as Op.com, BUT:
1) It works properly if I run Operausb.exe from opened opera920en folder. Like that:
http://img267.imageshack.us/my.php?image=opera1od0.gif
2) It doesn't work, if I run Operausb.exe from my "soft" toolbar in windows taskbar, asking for Op.com. Like in picture:
http://img267.imageshack.us/my.php?image=opera2rl4.gif
It should be the way to fix it... Opera-USB is only one of portable software, that has this problem.

P.S. Sorry for my English...

Just discovered Portableapps myself. Very cool! Take a bunch of apps with you on your USB drive and have a central application window that looks like the start menu to launch them all from, and surf all the music/docs/pics/video you have on the USB drive too. It's now installed on my 60Gb portable drive.

I too got operaUSB to appear in the portable apps menu - and get the same error when I try to launch it. It's because startportableapps.exe is launching it from the root but the operausb.exe and op.com both have to be in the portableapps folder for startportableapps.exe to see them. sheesh.

I was having the same problem until I ran the operausb.exe as administrator. Worked fine after that.

I just replaced operausb.exe with original opera.exe version 9.21. All work perfect. What does operausb.exe need for? May be this is the way to solve this problem?

PS: sorry for my bad english...

I solved the problem in this way:

renamed GSAR.exe in GSAR.com (will remove GSAR from PortableAPPS Panel)
renamed opera.com in opera.exe (will add Opera Browser Icon in PortableAPPS Panel)
launch Opera Browser instead Opera@USB...

Here it works fine!!! bigsmile

For me start menu from portableapps.com is stupid... you can not simply add programs that you would like in your portable start menu... you need special installer and so on... blah. Instead of that i'm using PStart. http://www.pegtop.net/start/ very cool, small and fast, better functionality.

Regarding of this way for launching programs:

it's something like this:

If you will try to start application directly from other folder than the application folder, you will see error, that some components were not found.

The problem in this situation is that, program (exe that you try to run) sees the path which from you try to launch it. So if I try to launch from my root folder in document and settings which is: C:\Documents and Settings\Ares> program: e:\programy\internet\opera\opera.exe > opera.exe sees satrting path: C:\Documents and Settings\Ares.

This is a little bit crazy why windows working in this way... Actually I'm looking for command line options to lanuch exes and specify "startup directory" - because the problem is not in operausb launch program, but in way of launching programs in Windows.

Anyway, there is a very simple workaround, just make a shortcut to operausb.exe, and now you can start opera even from the moon, because in shortcut is defined "Start directory" smile

No, it's not. You can simply drop an application folder to "PortableApps" folder, and start menu will see it.

Unfortunately, it's not a solution. Becouse:

Shortcut keeps an absolute path to executable file.

Tried to create start.bat file, containing only "@operausb.exe" string. No result =(

Hmmm...
I found it my self

i am using a .bat file to start opera usb for used in server2go aplication

in the bat file i used change directori first the call for operausb.exe

cd operausb_folder
operaub.exe

and thats work fine

aaah sorry for Miraculix
i've cheated your operausb a bit because when i used operausb.exe i cannot pass a url to be auto opened by the opera and my server2go went off after start because it's doesn't detect the op.com application.

so i cheated it with creating an aplication which doesn't do anything
(and empty void main())
than i rename it to op.com

and the original op.com i rename to it's original name opera.exe
than on the server2go setting on the start browser i send it to opera.exe so when opera.exe start it will autmaticaly load the url i passed its.

the .bat file are executed before the opera.exe are execute so the opera usb works fine than.

sorry for the cheating!!
but if you can fix the problem i'll be gratefull

- Let Operaubs.exe start when it called from outside folder
- let Operausb.exe pass the url parameter to the op.com

Thankyou!!

Hey guys

If you don't start Opera@USB with OperaUSB.exe the Path wil NOT checkt and set to the current !

ONLY if the Path didn't changed its the right way !
-> It works maybe also when the path is changed and you start with Opera.exe but you get faulty entry in the ini Files

I realise this answer comes late an offers no real solution but i'd just like to point out an alternative to portablapps. Pstart also creates a start menu for your USB aps and does so rather better. It scans your stick for exes and lists them. All you have to do is get rid of the ones you don't want.
It also allows you to use custom icons for your aps.

Ok this answer is very late. But anyone who stumbles across this error may want to try this. I was trying the browser with portable apps and the same thing happened to me. So of course I searched for the answer. I came to this site. However, by rereading the error message I figured out the problem. In my case the error message is

The last position was "G:\portable Apps\Portableapps\portableAppsMenu
The Actual position was "G:\portable Apps\Portableapps\portableAppsMenu

and a dialog box that states windows can't find 'Op.com'

The reason is op.com is in
"G:\portable Apps\Portableapps\portableAppsMenu\Opera

Solution:
Copy op.com to whatever folder is listed above, for me I put it in the portableappsmenu folder. I think for the person who originally posted it, it was "F:\"

For me:
"G:\portable Apps\Portableapps\portableAppsMenu

Good Luck

The guy who wrote PortableApps would love to have Opera, but Opera isn't Open Source, which means he can't distribute a modified version of Opera. If he can't distribute it, he can't support it. If he can't support it, he doesn't want to touch it. I can sympathize.

As someone who has done a lot of hackery to keep programs from writing in the registry, in /TEMP, in other places, the job U3, Opera@USB, and PortableApps is doing (keeping your data OFF the host computer) is much more complex than just running the app from a menu.

Remember, when you plug your memory stick into a random computer, you have NO IDEA what drive it will be running as, or where in the tree it ends up-- but the PortableApps will run, and won't leave traces when it's unplugged.

I am using Opera@USB(from 9.2 to 9.5) as available from opera-usb.com with portableapps and never came across any problem. Now I have started using PStart and now also I don't get any problem, so I am unable to understand what's the fuss.
