J2ME mobile browser comparison

Here's my modest attempt to review currently available J2ME browsers. This review is based on October 2009 situation, when BOLT has finally left the beta stage. I have selected three following J2ME browsers: BOLT 1.5, Opera Mini 4.2, and UCWEB 6.3. Definitely things will change when new versions are coming out, especially when Opera Mini 5 final is going to be released. Maybe I'm going to write new reviews also later on, now that I have formed some sort of standard for what and how to measure differences between J2ME browsers.

Using bookmarklets is possible because Opera Mini support javascript very well. Therefore you can use javascript also in bookmarks like listed at http://o.yeswap.com

Find out how much memory you have in your phone

One frequently repeated question at official Opera Mini forum is the amount of memory needed by Opera Mini. Very understandably OM team does not reveal much details and phone manufacturers usually don't tell much either. Usually on manufacturers Web sites only the size of phone's flash memory is told, but the size of so called heap (RAM) memory is hardly ever mentioned. Moreover, it is very unclear how this heap memory is allocated to different phone tasks. In this article I try to explain a little how memory is used while running Java midlet's like Opera Mini.

You can now sign up for testing of the next Opera Mini

Opera Software recently started accepting sign ups for beta testing of the upcoming Opera Mini with the codename dimension.

Opera Software released a beta version of Opera Mini 3.0. And you're invited to test it.
