unite, opera, standards
I've spent the last couple of days experimenting with the webpage source; trying different doctypes and using alternate solutions instead of using the deprecated 'BACKGROUND' attribute for backgrounds until today, I started using the
tag along with 'background-repeat: no-repeat;' instead of 'BACKGROUND'.
When validation time came, I was anxious to find out if I'd done enough. The page passed with flying colours! I also checked my CSS in the page for standards compliance (SC); same result, classified as CSS 2.1. The page is constantly tested in Opera (latest weekly) so that I can use it as a baseline. Safari, Chrome and Opera had no display differences.
There is no JavaScript in the page (which there used to be) because it doesn't need any. They're useless and take up time, size and my patience. JS can be messy, so I try to avoid it as much as possible.
Check the site: http://home.operabaker.operaunite.com/webserver/content/
Near the bottom of the page are the two locally stored images (to help latency) which are the valid CSS and valid HTML 4.01 logos. Why not click on them and see the results for yourself. BTW, my site was only a proof of concept to show that a [standards compliant] webpage can be made in Notepad. The site wasn't even live for a month (30th July - 21st August [Present]) and yet becomes compliant for everyone to see.
Unfortunately, there are some sites that do say they are SC. However, I checked some of them and turns out that they aren't. Why not test sites that say they're SC and if they're not, you can contact them regarding it and bring shame on them.
EDIT: I've fixed the problem; the file needed an XHTML extension. UPDATE: I now have an XHTML version of the page available. Also standards compliant! Too bad Opera Unite doesn't support it yet.

Although Opera Software haven't officially announced it, Opera 10 beta 3 is available. Opera Unite might be in this build (unless they change it later).

core, ie, xp, web
...
For those who believe IE is bloated, it is not and I will explain why.
IE is a program designed to use the Windows Core files and those core files are also used by Chrome (but Google has planned that Chrome will get it's own network stack in the future). The IE setup file contains not only the IE upgrade, but also updated versions of those core files. The rest of the files in the setup are Windows Core file updates and are not considered part of IE. Do not forget that IE uses those files as well and that's why they are updated also.
Therefore, IE is not bloatware as everyone is saying it is, but unfortunately it doesn't make up to the fact that IE is still slower than rival Web browsers.
UPDATE: I got in contact with Eric Lawence and he said, "Yes, installing IE does upgrade core system components (MSHTML, WinINET, JScript.dll, VBScript.dll, etc).

png, ie, alpha, transparency
...
I've finally achieved something!

Turns out IE7+ is 'cheating'

by using a plugin found in the system32 folder called pngfilt.dll and it's description says, "IE PNG plugin image decoder". As the name suggests, this dynamic link library is responsible for decoding PNG images in IE, but also for decoding images with alpha transparency. It's a plugin so really, IE is cheating it's support. IE depends on it so it can't be removed without any side effects (or it respawning).

Just thinking now, who else would have found this?

score, futuremark, chrome, again
...
Google Chrome 3 has been seen as the leader of the popular benchmark which came out of beta 2 months ago, Futuremark. Here is Google Chrome under the 'Fastest System' section (I will update the results as they change):
Google Chrome (v3.0.195.0) 7566 Points
Processor: Intel Core i7 Processor 920
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250
Memory: 6144 MB
OS: Microsoft Windows Vista
Form Factor: Desktop
The Safari 4 beta (which was the previous leader) got 6896 points so Chrome really does blow Safari out of the water on this one.

You may remember I had a post saying how I felt about the ads Microsoft aired on TV, but I have had to remove it to avoid any sort of complaints MS may throw at me. Sorry if I have caused any inconvenience.
