I have few questions that I often think about while browsing with opera for more than a decade:
1. Will this ever happen that opera becomes the most popular browser worldwide ? In what platform ?
2. Is it even more likely or less likely for it to be the most popular in USA ? In what platform ?
3. Will opera ever be baught by a big company ?
4. Will opera just disappear some day ?

Due to change in my personal career during last one year or so, I am not able to spend much time in opera forum as before. I miss this forum interactions for sure as I really enjoyed helping others to the best of my ability and learning in the process as well.
As a result of this, many posts in my blog are not up to date. While many of the topics are still valid and works fine, some might work only partially in newer opera versions. Also some are irrelevant for example, speed dial is implemented by default now.
So what I am going to do is to move the posts gradually to "archive" and only keep updated post in the blog page. If you are looking for something, please look into archive and links page.
I appreciate all of yours help in even enriching many of my posts.
Good luck Opera vXXXX.XXXX (actually my wishes will continue for infinite opera versions

I have seen many users reporting site problems or something wrong with opera. In the simplest case Tools>delete private data solves some issues and setting "empty cache on exit" (proference>advanced>history)
is a good thing. But most reasons are far beyond that.Based on my observations, I have summarized few common troublemakers and some basic things to check if that is causing problem. This might save time before going for more detailed bug hunting.

Many websites are design to work with IE only and users need to use IE for those. Firefox has a IE tab. Now using Neptune PLug-in you can open a IE tab inside opera too. Its easy and works great. See detail instructions below.

Based on discussions in this thread
, I just learned that Remco Lanting
has discovered the hidden treasure
related to opera's great feature "speed dial".
Now you can add as many speed dial as you want. Here is what you need to do:
1. Go to help>about opera to locate your opera directory. Now close opera.
2. Go to opera profile directory and open speeddial.ini(configuration settings) file.
3. Add the following at the end of the file.
A 4X3 setting there means 12 speed dial and you can change the numbers as you wish.
4. Open Opera and enjoy the newly discovered hidden feature.
Wow.Opera rocks. Thanks to Remco
to uncover this nice cool thing.
Hey opera, Why did you hide this in the first place? Should have been in opera:config at least if not preferences. I want this to be in preferences somewhere.
Edit: Opera listened and it is coming in opera10.

Windows media player plug-in has recently become a headache for many users specially those using vista. With the new buzz of WMP firefox plug-in
, there is more confusion than ever before. That installer should install in c:\PFiles> and should be either auto-detected by opera or copy files to opera plug-in folder. Sometimes, nothing happens. There are discussion in the forum to extract np-mswmp.dll
file from C:\PFiles\Plugins\np-mswmp.dll to opera plug-in folder. You can also get the np-mswmp.dll file by extracting(using uniextract program)
the installer itself. Method 1
For your conenience, you can download this zip file
with latest wmp plug-ins and extract the files to opera's plug-in folder(c>programfiles>opera>program>plug-in).Alternate Method:
I use WMP 11 plug-in files without any problem on windowx xp and vista(don't know about 64-bit).For me old horse still runs good! So I would rather recommend use this simple steps to make windows media player plug-in working with opera.

In a very ideal world installing plug-in in a browser( for example opera) should a piece of cake. Isn't it? For example, if you want to install shockwave player plug-in, just go to adobe shockwave site
, download the installer file, install and enjoy shockwave content in opera browser.
Even Grand Mom can do it!
Well here is the twist. What if after installing, shockwave does not work? Trouble starts. What is the reason and what is the fix? Good question but equally difficult to answer!

Opera has changed keyboard shortcuts
and have posted some excuses
for it too. For example, simple and fast cntr+B for paste and go
is now gone. You have to do exercise of your fingers to press cntr+hft+V
for that. The whole point of quick paste and go is missed there.
For those who are not convinced and like the old ways to be more user firendly, say "no"
to new one. keep using your old one.Update: Seems like opera 9.5beta is showing opera9.2compatible keyboard setup to choose from in their preferences>advanced>shortcut>opera9.2 compatible.

", I am listing out the following for opera people to consider.Actually, there are too many things I like to see and many are under discussions in a number of threads already. So its a tough task for me to choose top 5 wishes and put it in nice words!

You can significantly enhance the font display by opera by activating the cleartype font in windows. ClearType enhances your display by smoothing the edges of screen fonts. ClearType works especially well on Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) devices, including flat screen monitors and laptop computers.
But the improvement in standard CRT monitor is also clearly noticeable. See screenshots(With cleartype
and without Cleartype
)from regular CRT monitor with 1024x768 resolution and WinXp system.

Sometimes it is a great idea to backup your settings so tha you don't loose anything in case of a mess up of your opera settings. With opera 9.5 sync feature, this has been geatly simplified as there is online backup of your bookmarks, notes, speed dial etc. However, opera settings are not backed up by sync feature yet. So you need to do manual backup of things.
