Enhance font display by opera by activating windows cleartype font like IE7 does

, , , ,

You can significantly enhance the font display by opera by activating the cleartype font in windows. ClearType enhances your display by smoothing the edges of screen fonts. ClearType works especially well on Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) devices, including flat screen monitors and laptop computers. But the improvement in standard CRT monitor is also clearly noticeable. See screenshots(With cleartype and without Cleartype)from regular CRT monitor with 1024x768 resolution and WinXp system.

Here is how to activate cleartype font in wondows xp:

1.Click Start, click Control Panel, click Appearance and Themes, and then click Display.(Alternately, right click on desktop>appearance>).
2.On the Appearance tab, click Effects.
3.Click to select the Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts check box, and then click ClearType in the list.

You can fine tune the clear type font display by downloading this powertuner from microsoft. It has a nice wizard to guide you through. But you can manually adjust contrast and use the wizard by the following steps:
control panel>Appearance&themes>cleartype tuner> you can see the wizard and Advanced tab will show you the contrast control.
Easy. Enjoy opera with crisp display. Might need to adjust opera webpage font size etc depending on your monitor resolution.

I will never understand how that blurry font-soup you get when activating cleartype makes anything better.

Clear-type makes it better on LCD screens. Fonts on LCD screens often look pixelated, so blurring helps make things look smoother.

That seems pretty old (2004). Is that better than the MS one or does anything extra?

I like it better than the MS tuner, but I think it's just personal preference. This one has a continuous slider instead of multiple choice.

Cleartype is not just for LCDs, it is great for CRT monitors too. It's advisable to try out which setting works best, and that will differ by graphics card and monitor model.
But before, it's important to reassess the monitor's setting of convergence and moiré, especially if it's being operated since a few years. Some good graphics cards allow to adjust the RGB sharpness, that should be optimized for best display too.

With inaccurate setting, the fonts will look blurry with colorful edges. With accurate setting, the fonts will look smooth and sharp, and you won't be able to pinpoint the font's pixels or see stepped diagonal lines as most people are used to.
