How to reset opera back to factory default setting (Profile reset)

, , , , , ,

Many problems related to opera settings are solved by "profile reset" method described in the blog of Neeraj. But some users find it difficult to do this. To help in that, I have summarized some tips to do backup and profile reset in a smart way so that you will never be afraid of doing it at anytime.

The basic steps are 1)Backup necessary files 2)Delete opera6(configuration settings) file from profile directory. See details below.

What is profile reset?

Profile reset removes all your preference settings(like the options you choose in tools>preferences, custom toolbars, menu etc) and let opera rebuild it to the factory default condition automatically. The great advantage it brings that it destroys bad settings that you might have done or might have accumulated with multiple upgrade etc. This is very likely to resolve many issues users encountered with opera user settings.

What to do before profile reset? Do I need to backup?

You need to backup your files so that you can get back your data.

How to do the profile reset?
Close opera. You need to locate your profile directory (Help>about opera will show you the exact location). In windows xp, it is commonly at c:\documents&settings>username>application data>opera>opera>profile and in win vista its under in Win Vista C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Roaming\Opera. Note that "Application data" is a hidden folder in windows and you need to enable the opton to view hidden files and folders(open my computer>tools>folder options>view>show hidden files and folders). Once you have found the folder, just find and delete the file opera6.ini(configuration settings). Restart opera and opera will rebuild the profile settings.

How did I miss that typo in thread title! I was just focused on the opera directory path.

I guess I need a little more help here. I am using windows xp, service pack 3, and opera 9.63, among other browsers.
I had turned on the java error console, just to see what was going on, & trouble shoot some other issues with my computer ( Toshiba Satellite A75), but could not get it to turn off again.
I actually un-installed opera, then re-installed but it kept coming back.
Then I used "System Restore" to go back to an earlier date.
now, all the menu tabs are gone, or displayed black on black. ( yeah, very funny, I don't have time for this.) also, if I open www.google.com, the search bar must be white on white. if I wander over it with the mouse, I can find it, but otherwise it is invisible.
I went to the opera profile folder & deleted the opera.ini. restarted opera, but it still comes up with black on black
I went back to the "(... application data > opera>opera> and renamed the profile folder, restarted opera, & still it is unusable. do I need to ditch/rename these files & reboot the machine before restarting opera?
Thanks for any help, I really miss Opera.

hey I want to reset Opera for window 7 but I don't know how. I don't have any idea of how to reset from the factory default setting

Do you have an idea on how to reset a site setting back to default after I had inadvertently clicked to disable the scripts on the page?
