CE and teacher

CE and teacher

This is CE as mentioned in the post below on his last day at HL School. Best wishes my little pal. You will do excellent at your "new school".

Students come and go

If you have read my last two posts, you'll be familiar with a little girl age 7 who just passed away on February 19th rip The wake was this past Sunday and well attended, as expected by many teachers and support staff who have worked with her since age 3. As a group/team we to remind ourselves not to get too emotionally attached to a kid, because they may move out of the district, change special education placements, or move up to the big classroom in the sky. I was not as close to "Mary" as many of my collegues, so her passing was not too hard on me personally. Now comes my  break hotel story.

An 8-year old 2nd grader, with speech and language issues, sees me one time a week to work on gross motor skills. He is a very bright boy, with a mind that retains everything:D He understands receptive language, but is starting to learn sign language to communicate answers and tell us what he wants. But we cannot provide all of the services he needs in terms of signing :frown: so he needs to go to a "special school" for kids who are mostly hearing impaired (although he is not) and kids who's primary method of communicating will be sign language. So his last day at H.L. School is tommorrow and he will start at the new place on Monday 3/3   Ok, so how do you NOT get emotionally attached to a kid who wants to learn in all settings, even the stinky gym??? (its not really stinky...its like new) Sorry folks, it's not in my personality to just do my job and forget about them when I go home:down: no can do.

I will miss him with all of my  and soul, but it's never a good bye, just "see ya" later

Thank God It's Friday

So, today at 2:30 I drag my tired ass:zzz: into the last school of the day to work with a 2nd grader in gym class, whom I just adore. On my way into the gym, I see these adorable "mitten pictures" painted by either early childhood or kindergarten kids. Let me try to upload my photo which I took on my phone. You see the mittens look like the state of Michigan to me. (Yooperprof will be proud of my keen eye)

Near the mitten pictures is a mural (I guess) on the brick wall. The famous Georges-Pierre Seurat painting in all it's glory. Here is the picture taken with my phone

During a week where all of us in the district have been saddened by the death of a 6-year old girl who lost the struggle with her illness and the NIU shootings a week ago, I searched for a reason to be happy today, besides being Friday...and it was through this art work, created by innocent kids who we should all take under our wings and love. Well, I finally made it to the gym, where the student teacher from NIU was teaching a new game called "beat the ball", and there was not a sad face anywhere to be seen, especially on the face of Mr.P, the student teacher.

A Call From Heaven

The 6-year old cutie-pie went to heaven rip sometime Monday night in her sleep. She is in a better place and is probably bossing my Mother around about what clothes to wear:love: This has been a tough week, with "Mary"'s passing and the shooting at NIU. I have to thank Yooperprof and his buddies in the UP for their spirited postings this week. Smiling is a good thing, even in grief.

Ciao for now.....CB

Fun Fair, Fund Raiser

Yesterday, one of the elementary schools I go to had it's annual Fun Fair. I had never volunteered for this event, because after all, I'm in the gym all week dealing with kids and on the weekend I like to relax. Well this day was different. Since I cannot go into any detail about the child, I can say that a girl who was on my caseload for a few weeks this year has a serious illness and she may not live very long. Some of the staff who have worked with "Mary"(not her real name) rounded up some interested people to do some fund raising activities to help the family with medical expenses, etc...Last week the principal of the school have us permission to have a table set up and a raffle for $1.00 per chance in "Mary's" behalf. We also sold green bracelets for $2.00 a piece. There were many good prizes to be won, such as a Hannah Montana doll, 2 tickets to a Chicago Wolves Hockey game, etc....The fund raiser was a BIG success, bringing in between $600-800 dollars. Some of "Mary's" family stopped by our table and it was hard for them not to tear up. I felt so good inside, and so did my partner (the organizer of the entire event) and a few other teachers. More fund raising will take place in the community, such as "Pennies for the Princess" (gallon milk jugs) displayed in various stores and schools in the area. This little girl, age 7 has so much spirit, and a personality, if you ever met her, you will never forget:)
I just want to thank everyone for their kind heart and dedication. God Speed "Mary"

Searching for relatives in Norway

Just curious, any Fredricksen's  out there in Opera-land living in Norway? Only serious need reply to this most interesting question

Chicago weather

Recently, it seems like all it does is snow and get to sub-zero temperatures around here:down: The Chicago area has not had this much snow is a long time. So...this is good news for the little ski resorts in the vicinity:pingu: It started snowing today around 3:00 and is not supposed to stop until later tommorrow. Powder variety, which is easier to plow and shovel. That's all of the news from here. I was able to get the two IEP's done for tommorrow's meeting during lunch/plan period. Having my  groovy office space at the district building is wonderful. I promise, this will be the only boring Blog this year. I just haven't had the time lately, because of the  weather.

My Last Name Story

Since I have my Norwegian heritage picture in one of my photo albums, I thought it would be a good idea to explain just what ethnic origin I am from and what happened to the "other" last name. So here goes. My Mother's side rip is Scottish and maybe a bit of Irish. My Father (who is 80 and a fiesty dude, who still loves the Green Bay Packers):D had a 100% Norwegian mother and a 100% Italian father :yikes: With me so far? The Norwegian family name is: Fredricksen,ie; Alice Fredricksen was my paternal grandmother who married Angelo Hugo Bambini wine The Bambini's had one son, my Dad, who they named Dean. Dean, was forunate enough to go to college at The University of Illinois-Champaign and graduated from the college of Business and Commerce. Dean was raised in Chicago and at one time was a Bears fan:irked: and is still a die hard Cub fan :smurf: Anyway, back to the last name story. Dean married a beautiful woman who he met at Illinois, named Carolan and he was offered his first job as a building manager in Milwaukee, Wi. As the story goes, my well connected Norwegian grandmother got my Dad hooked up for his first job as a building manager. Apparently, someone mentioned to her that the last name "Bambini" may be too Italian, and if he changed it to a "waspy" name, his opportunities would be unlimited. Well he did just that, much to the:irked: of Angelo Bambini (can you blame him?). So, Dean and Carolan went to the phone book to pick out a name that started with the letter "B" and a name that his unborn children would not be teased about. OK! So it was picked B_ _ _ _ _. Final thoughts on this story. As a kid growing up in Shorewood, Wi. for the life of me, I could not figure out why my last name was different than my paternal grandparents, was I adopted:confused: no, adoption, just a name change to make life easier. Bottom line is I am a Bambini in my heart and soul. I am not related to any famous actor(s) who just happen to have the same "new last name".

Won't Be Eating My Shorts

There are some benefits of being a news and weather-a-holic, when it comes to making and winning a bet. Yesterday at school, I made a bet with several staff members and administrators that today (Friday) would be a snow day, and if not I would eat my shorts:lol: Of course if we have a snow day, we need to make it up at the end of the school year:down: Most of my collegues  at me thinking what they had heard was 3-6" of snow in our part of the Chicago area. Well, guess what happened? Today was in fact a snow day, and we got on the average 11-12" of snow. So I won't be eatin' those shorts:troll: after all. Now I just wait for the next bet to come my way p:

The Race Card 101

I commented in a forum about how crazy I think the media is (and others, ahhem! Clinton's) about Barak Obama's race. I understand that anyone with a drop of African blood can claim to be African-American. However, he is bi-racial:doh: If anyone read his book, "The Audacity of Hope", you will learn that his mother is white and from Kansas. He was raised by his maternal grandparents...white! I watch cable new alot, and not one channel or pundit has mentioned, that I am aware of, has mentioned the bi-racial reality of this great man. Ok, so maybe I need to email FOX news or something. Nature or nurture that is the question at hand. Good night and good luck....bye p:
