More umpf added

Even when we are not working the Opera Mini 4 servers, thanks to all of you, our users, are providing valuable performance statistics (and a few error reports). We are continously using this data to find bottlenecks and ways to improve our service.

We just released a server upgrade of the Mini 4 servers, which includes some quite significant performance improvements in many areas. Some typical numbers that we are seeing are an overall speed boost of 70% (see diagram), and the average time to transcode a page has almost been halved.

They ain't just blowing smoke bout a speed boost. It's on a par with Mini 3 now. If only the memory requirements were the same, all my mobile lot could switch. :frown:

[BUG] OM4 display Chinese characters in "
" incorrectly

It Looks like OM4 treat ChineseCharacters as half of its true width.
In another word, OM4 treat Chinese Chaeracters' width as the same of English Characters'

as a result of that, Chinese Characters are displayed second half mixed with the next Character's First Half.

Hello from Maine (on a Treo 650/Palm OS) -

I wondered "why" Opera Mini 4 seemed to be faster, and now you've explained everything!

Except for cutting/pasting activities - which require "slow as cold molasses" Blazer - I seem to be doing everything in Opera Mini, these days.

Keep up the good work!

Wish they had Opera/Linux Treos in the States, but guess they are foreign handsets only. Have had Opera on my PCs as a default since the days of Opera 3.6.

Great products!

Keep up the good work!

Reards, Douglas

I prefer opera to my default browser. I don't know why?

Hi -

On my PCs Opera "keeps up with" my highspeed touch typing. (Other browsers do not.)

Opera Mini is fast loading on my Treo 650 as it was (in version 2.x) for my old Motorola V505.

If you are fast/accurate on your writing, Opera has NO competion, in my opinion.

I also like the customizable features. On Mini 4, I have "Mobile View" marked (checked) most of the time. Opera Link is also very convenient.

Great browsers for PCs and my Smartphone!

Regards, Douglas

Opera Mini rocks!... I still prefer 3.1's SSR to 4.0's... but I'm starting to use 4.0 more and more and it's a-ight...

Opera Mini 3.1 "disappeared" from my Treo 650 when the final upgrade to Opera 4 took place.

I really don't miss Mini 3.x or 2.x, now.

Am running Mini 4 about 85% of the time. Blazer (the Palm OS default) is begining to "rust", here.

Running both simultaneously is the best. :D

I did run beta Mini 4 + 3.1 simultaneously UNTIL the final Mini 4 was released.

Mini 4 "took over" and put all the Bookmarks together, creating many double listings.

Maybe the Palm OS system does this automatically.

Nope, it's just that Mini 4 final had to take the same name as Mini 3 had for server purposes. You can still download Mini 3 as a seperate application though if you wish. It's useful to have both. Want the link?

By Furie, # 14. January 2008, 23:56:50

avatar
I sure do!

There are a few things that 3.1 did for me that Mini 4 does not. (I have done bug reports and Opera fixed most of the glitches. Mini 4 in beta "froze up" all the time until the final release, for example.)

I can't delete messages in Open WebMail or mark them "read". Blazer will. Mail2web.com is where I delete spam in Mini 4 since Open WebMail - from my provider - will not (unlike 3.1)

By the way, it's none of my business but what 'phone are you using? Most Smartphone users in rural Maine seem to have the Nokia E62i or a similar 'phone by that Finnish company. Treos in Maine are like dinosaurs! I like the bright display of Palm OS on this Treo.

Best wishes, Douglas

I've just upgraded to the Nokia 6120 classic. She's a pretty little thing, but strong inside where it counts. I think we'll be very happy together.

You might want to edit your comment to remove your e-mail address. It's a bad idea to go plonking it on a public webpage.

Link is - http://mini.opera.com/?langsel=1&rel=3 to choose your version and it wont overwrite Mini 4. It's a handy thing to have in case of server difficulties with Mini 4. Hopefully once they've had time to work on it for a while, that link wont be needed by anyone.

Damn, just thought of this. If I've violated something by putting that link up, someone can remove it without needing to warn me or anything. The fact that it's gone will let me know I screwed up, so I'll apologise now just in case. :D

Thanks! Got the 3.1 download address. It was handy having both browsers while Opera worked on version 4.
The URL is in MEMOS on my Treo.

All the Nokias here have Symbian ... but ... in short order they use Opera Mini, just like me.

Sincerely - Douglas

PS: I lead a rather public Internet life in the musical/poltical spheres. As a result I get spam messages beyond belief. The value of Opera Mini is that I can junk these messages "on the server" long before I download from the POP3 provider. Whenever there's an idle moment, I clean the INBOX queue. This cuts my PC time immensely.

Good morning (in Opera on my Tecra laptop) -

Was checking the "umpf" blogs and thought I'd add an off-topic comment, here.

In the States, Ann Sheridan was "The Oomph Girl", prior to Lana Turner in movies becoming "The Sweater Girl" ... all following silent star Clara Bow as "The It Girl", of course.

We spell "oomph" this way, but phonetically Opera's "umpf" would sound the same, and presumably mean the same thing.

Just comments from an Opera fan who's almost 70, so has a foot in the past as well as in modern technology.

Keep up the good work at Opera ... there's nothing like your products for Internet use.

Sincerely, Douglas

It works off your regular web settings so it's probably your java settings that're wrong.

There's nothing like Mini 4 when it's working properly.

I just survived two days of Mini "freezing up" my Treo 650 'phone and concluded that the probem was with the remote servers (and not my handset).

Today, Opera Mini resumed running faultlessly, so I'm enjoying it again.

Cordially, Douglas

hi friends
i'm having Nokia 5610 express music mobile. i have great difficulty in downloading opera mini 4 while opera mini 3 is working fine and can be downloaded easily. when i try to download opera mini 4, it gives message "Invalid Application for Download" and terminates. Then I copied opera mini 4 from other mobile where it was working well, but as soon as i copied it to my mobile(nokia 5610)its icon changed and name became "invalid application", and ofcourse it was not working on my mobile again.

Could anybody resolve this issue.
Thanx in anticipation...

Hello,

I don't have any knowledge about Nokia 'phones (sold here with Symbian OS) but I had a similar problem where my Treo 650 (w/Palm OS) would not accept Opera Mini 4 beta, the first version.

Mini 3.1 was running fine until Mini 4 beta took over.

A writer in the Forums told me to change the Java settings to the maximum. (I can't check them while writing but as I recall I slid from 8 to 32 in Preferences.)

That worked. No problem after that.

The Nokia E62i is the model used in our area of New England.

Good luck.

Sincerely, Douglas

"I prefer opera to my default browser"

YES!

I have Opera on any device
*opera 9.27+ 9.50 beta b9937 an my PC.
*operamini 4.1 beta on my old (and only) cellphone and
on the (Java) cellphone-emulator (that is used for the
online-demo of operamini) on my PC
*if I would have a Wii or a Playstation 2 or 3 (with linux)
or an Xbox360 (with linux), I would also install opera on it.

Hello -

All my previous Opera postings above involved a Treo 650.

The little used telephone (voice) part died recently and I bought a Nokia E62 with Symbian OS. Naturally, I installed Opera Mini 4 and am happy with the Internet results.

The speaker is tinny and it has no camera but is "rock solid" as a browser and a wireless modem. Opera is even faster on the new 'phone.

The Treo continues to be used as a music/video player, due to its superior speaker, and the Organizer is still being operated, since it's better than the Nokia application.

Having used cell 'phones for E-Mail dating back to 1997 and digital PC 'phones back to 2004, I can say that the Nokia E62 - as a modem and as an E-Mail/browser handset - is the best I've used to date. With Opera Mini 4 in it, the Internet experience is doubly delightful.

Regards, Douglas
