Opera Mini 4.1 beta available for testing!
By Marianne. Wednesday, 2. April 2008, 08:27:39
We are proud to announce the beta release of Opera Mini 4.1. You can download it from http://www.operamini.com/beta
Here are the new features added since Opera Mini 4.0:
- Download and upload files directly in Opera Mini
- Save pages for offline browsing
- Autocompletion when entering addresses directly
- Find in page
- Increased server speed during the last months
- Signed versions of Opera Mini
Please be aware that the first two features require JSR-75 support on your handset. Far from all handset support this, and it can also be turned on/off in the JVM or by the service provider.
We have now chosen to sign Opera Mini with Verisign and Thawte, and we will provide four different versions on our download server: Double signed (both Verisign and Thawte), Verisign, Thawte, and unsigned. The advantage of the signed version is that you can change permission settings to less restrictive permissions. The end result is that you will get fewer permission dialogs for e.g., file and network access.
We encourage you all to try the signed versions first, unless you have Palm OS or BlackBerry, and if none of them work on your phone, download the unsigned version. By trying to start a signed version, your phone will send some useful feedback to our servers which we will use later.
We hope you all enjoy this beta as much as us, and that you will provide feedback in our forum or directly in our feedback thread.
Known issues
As this is a beta, there are bound to be some known issues. Here's a list of some:
- There are problems with entering address directly on some phones. If you experience this problem, please go to settings and disable "Direct address input".
- Palm OS and BlackBerry can't use Opera Mini with certificates.
- BlackBerry devices with firmware older than 4.2 can't start this beta version. The firmware can be found in "Options -> About" on line #3.
- Direct image download doesn't work, but will open in your native browser.
What is JSR-75?
JSR-75 is an optional package for J2ME (this is very technical, meaning it can be included in the Java on your phone) which allows Opera Mini to access the file system on your phone. By accessing the file system, Opera Mini can download and upload files without going through the phone's native browser. JSR-75 is also used when saving pages.
Best regards,
The Opera Mini team

Can anyone quickly advise whether the Nokia N95 already supports JSR-75, do I need to download anything else?

Check the correct rendering in Opera Browser and compare it to the Mini version to see the differences.

You certainly proved to be the leading company on mobile browser development. I was no expecting to see all those features so soon. I hope you get rid of beta problems as soon as possible.

Please solve it !! (Yes I know this kind of things happen using Betas)
So I'm not angry, I knew the risk. But please solve it.

Problems:
*Couldn't get around changing the typing scheme (Abc, ABC, 123; T9Abc, T9ABC)when typing-in the URL in the start page, so I can't chek any site this way, since I can only type numbers!
*When I click for a long time on the directions key, I just go down for one block, normally should go on until I stop pressing the buttons. (happens on any sites, and even in the start page)
*Still can't use the Landscape mode
I didn't test the upload thing, since I'm not able to reach any sites. (could probably go through google, err, I'm lazy^^)

It doesn't happen when the browser open a new window to input text, like when entering in a textfield in a textpage, or when using the old way of typing address.
I'm using a samsung i780, using esmertec jbed 3.1 java host

The direct input textfield you get when you enter a url, would be great for other places you need to enter text at, like for the new search feature's textfield, and the search engine list you get with the #9 keypad shortcut.
Multiple tabs would be a killer feature too. Different devices have different amounts of ram and if you fix the number of tabs openable to the lowest common denominator openable on all devices, the hardware resources on mid and high end devices won't be used. So a dynamic number of maximum tabs allowed would be great.
Youtube's released a java app that lets you view all their videos. It'd be unbelievably awesome if Opera could get together with Google and make the youtube website and all it's videos work well with mini, which is also a java app.
