Opera Mini 4.1 beta available for testing!

, ,

We are proud to announce the beta release of Opera Mini 4.1. You can download it from http://www.operamini.com/beta

Here are the new features added since Opera Mini 4.0:
  • Download and upload files directly in Opera Mini
  • Save pages for offline browsing
  • Autocompletion when entering addresses directly
  • Find in page
  • Increased server speed during the last months
  • Signed versions of Opera Mini

Please be aware that the first two features require JSR-75 support on your handset. Far from all handset support this, and it can also be turned on/off in the JVM or by the service provider.

We have now chosen to sign Opera Mini with Verisign and Thawte, and we will provide four different versions on our download server: Double signed (both Verisign and Thawte), Verisign, Thawte, and unsigned. The advantage of the signed version is that you can change permission settings to less restrictive permissions. The end result is that you will get fewer permission dialogs for e.g., file and network access.

We encourage you all to try the signed versions first, unless you have Palm OS or BlackBerry, and if none of them work on your phone, download the unsigned version. By trying to start a signed version, your phone will send some useful feedback to our servers which we will use later.

We hope you all enjoy this beta as much as us, and that you will provide feedback in our forum or directly in our feedback thread.

Known issues

As this is a beta, there are bound to be some known issues. Here's a list of some:
  • There are problems with entering address directly on some phones. If you experience this problem, please go to settings and disable "Direct address input".
  • Palm OS and BlackBerry can't use Opera Mini with certificates.
  • BlackBerry devices with firmware older than 4.2 can't start this beta version. The firmware can be found in "Options -> About" on line #3.
  • Direct image download doesn't work, but will open in your native browser.

What is JSR-75?

JSR-75 is an optional package for J2ME (this is very technical, meaning it can be included in the Java on your phone) which allows Opera Mini to access the file system on your phone. By accessing the file system, Opera Mini can download and upload files without going through the phone's native browser. JSR-75 is also used when saving pages.

Best regards,
The Opera Mini team

I'll have a play around with this when I have finished work.

Can anyone quickly advise whether the Nokia N95 already supports JSR-75, do I need to download anything else?

KYren 2. April 2008, 08:39

:yes:On my way to download it.

ManneS 2. April 2008, 08:40

Nokia N95 should support JSR-75, at least the one we have does. But please note there are no guarantees...

moirob 2. April 2008, 08:44

Do I need to download any other files for JSR-75, or would it already be on the N95 (if it is there)?

If I do need to download I have found the JSR-75 website and there are two pacakges, PIM data and accessing file systems, would I need both or just one?

perja 2. April 2008, 08:51

moirob: no, you don't need any extra files for JSR-75.

ManneS 2. April 2008, 08:52

No need to download anything extra.

Furie 2. April 2008, 09:32

Moirab, it's built into the phone specs. The only reason you wouldn't have it is if you're on an american network and they've specifically asked Nokia to remove it for their version of the phone.

yehezkelshb 2. April 2008, 09:35

It's unbelievable! I have no words!

shadowk 2. April 2008, 09:57

Bugs:
Wrong version number on install it says Opera 4.01
Icon is missing(beta 4.0 had a really nice icon)

[Later Edit]
Oups my fault, sorry about that

ManneS 2. April 2008, 09:58

@ shadowk: Please report a bug regarding icon. Version number is up to the phone, so that's not an Opera Mini bug.

jaiprasad54 2. April 2008, 10:25

Furie 2. April 2008, 11:49

Interesting. It uploads files to this site yet they show as taking no space and can't be accessed once uploaded. Anyone know if this is problem with the beta or with MyOpera?

piroxicam 2. April 2008, 12:46

Rendering bug in www.sas.ua.pt
Check the correct rendering in Opera Browser and compare it to the Mini version to see the differences.

gatestone 2. April 2008, 13:09

Is there any possibility, that cookies and speed dials woould be retained across version upgrades? I am tired of re-configuring Speed-dials and re-entering all my usernames and password very tine a new version is published.

DjiXas 2. April 2008, 13:19

Wow, Find in page!

serola 2. April 2008, 13:34

Thank you very much Opera Mini team :D
You certainly proved to be the leading company on mobile browser development. I was no expecting to see all those features so soon. I hope you get rid of beta problems as soon as possible.

NoteMe 2. April 2008, 13:45

@gatestone:

AT least speed dieal for now. But you have to use Opera Link. It will sync your bookmarks as well as speed dial.

Opera ini 4.1 Beta installed correctly on my Sony Ericsson K550i but it can't access web pages, displays the following message afer <go to> for any web address: "
Failed to connect to the Internet.
b03
javax.microedition.ioConectionNotFoundException:

andresruiz 2. April 2008, 14:46

I can't believe it !! Opera Mini 4.1 Beta damaged my internet acces config !! Once installed, the "E" logo (for EDGE) is not any more there, I lost my internet for any program...ouchhhhh. My operator just sent me the settings again but it doesn't work, I've to go to operators office to receive personal technician suport.
Please solve it !! (Yes I know this kind of things happen using Betas)
So I'm not angry, I knew the risk. But please solve it.

serola 2. April 2008, 14:51

@ Andresruiz - I recommend you repeat your problem at Opera Mini forum: http://my.opera.com/community/forums/forum.dml?id=111

Edit: And do mention your service provider.

Maulkin 2. April 2008, 15:55

Just download, and tested briefly the signed version on a Samsung UGH-U600.

Problems:

*Couldn't get around changing the typing scheme (Abc, ABC, 123; T9Abc, T9ABC)when typing-in the URL in the start page, so I can't chek any site this way, since I can only type numbers!

*When I click for a long time on the directions key, I just go down for one block, normally should go on until I stop pressing the buttons. (happens on any sites, and even in the start page)

*Still can't use the Landscape mode :frown:, I know this is not dependent to this beta, but, this is really a shame for all people that own certain types of devices...

I didn't test the upload thing, since I'm not able to reach any sites. (could probably go through google, err, I'm lazy^^)

Seji 2. April 2008, 16:28

Downloading it, using it, loving it, finding one problem right now, sending bug info. THANKS! :)

hkultraman 2. April 2008, 17:11

Sorry, this is just my wishlist. If it is possible, I really hope the OM4.1 support cleartype of my WM5 phone, as using non-cleartype font to read chinese font on WM5 is really ugly.

Cheers. Nice upgrade.

zoligrg89 2. April 2008, 17:11

Hurray for saving web pages!:D
Thanks! I'm downloading it now

I forgot to say thanks, I love saving pages, downloading files and uploading. It seems I won't use NetFront anymore !!

redpok 2. April 2008, 18:53

Now let's see if this is the first 4.x Opera Mini that will work on firmware 3.05 Nokia 3230... The previous ones have not.

jaiprasad54 2. April 2008, 19:03

I just noticed new OM 4.1 can download jar format but it will be Great if opera mini can download any file such as mp3,exe,3gp etc. When i trying to download files with this format it gives me error "error fetching file"

Ronyn 3. April 2008, 00:29

There are a little mistakes the 4 and in the 4.1 version. If the side is on his roof rss fishy, then the select assigning input higher up is found ( or the side is late below the rss because of a fink, and the designation does not follow it )

johanaziz 3. April 2008, 00:43

Help! Having some key repeat issues. When i press any key, it is as if I'm pressing it down forever, the character keeps on repeating forever. This happens when i try to type anything on the address bar, and also when using the number 8 and 2 to page up and page down, it won't stop.

It doesn't happen when the browser open a new window to input text, like when entering in a textfield in a textpage, or when using the old way of typing address.

I'm using a samsung i780, using esmertec jbed 3.1 java host

redpok 4. April 2008, 19:52

Not working on v3.05 Nokia 3230, freeze on startup.

Qasibr 5. April 2008, 08:19

This works great on Nokia N80, v5.07 firmware. I hope Opera would be adding new features before this version's final release, like they did with the mini 4.0 beta.

The direct input textfield you get when you enter a url, would be great for other places you need to enter text at, like for the new search feature's textfield, and the search engine list you get with the #9 keypad shortcut.

Multiple tabs would be a killer feature too. Different devices have different amounts of ram and if you fix the number of tabs openable to the lowest common denominator openable on all devices, the hardware resources on mid and high end devices won't be used. So a dynamic number of maximum tabs allowed would be great.

Youtube's released a java app that lets you view all their videos. It'd be unbelievably awesome if Opera could get together with Google and make the youtube website and all it's videos work well with mini, which is also a java app.

Please make sure you guys fix the wi-fi access issue with BB Curve in the final release...This is the only thing that stops me from using O on my BB.

Adef 12. April 2008, 02:42

Work fine on N6680, but 4.0 still faster. I hope in future, clean history also can clean cache on the phone. So, if my browser going slowly bcoz "out memory", i didnt need to restart the operamini, just clean history, and continue browsing like just begining..

Furie 14. April 2008, 17:50

Gotta love these networks. Ship the phones out at premium rates with expensive contracts then don't even bother to provide all the settings you need. :irked:

SuXess 15. April 2008, 18:36
