Opera Mini Blog

Help us test our new US data centre

, , ,

As Opera Mini gains more users around the world we're trying to make sure that it works well for everyone. As part of this we're adding more of the data centres where the web pages you request are formatted, compressed and sent on their way to your phone. The first new data centre is in the USA.

To make this work we've had to make some changes in the Opera Mini server software. We need your help to test the system before we trust it with all the Opera Mini users (because that's a lot of people).

So, if you want to help you just need to download and install a special version of Opera Mini 4.1. It can be installed on your phone at the same time as the normal version. You can find it here:
http://mini.opera.com/globaltest/

Edit: The test client is called "Mini Global Test".

The main difference you'll probably notice is that page titles are all prefixed by either "[EU]" or "[US]" depending on which data centre you're currently using. You'll be allocated to one or another depending on where you are in the world and which is busier. There are some other changes and I'm curious to see if you spot them :D

Remember, this is a test so it might not always work correctly, we might sometimes have to make changes or fix things. You should keep your normal Opera Mini around as well.

More SVG support, and more fun with Outlook or FriendsterOpera Mini 4.2 beta available for testing!

The [EU] designations have returned, after an absence of many days. No [US] indicators have appeared on my 'phone, however (as before).

Was getting both server indicators for a while.

This is probably not important.

I live in the u.s. I've been using the global test for about a week and i have not been on the u.s. server yet. I'm using a nokia 6555 if that helps. Is there something i need to do to get it to work right

Kevin O'Rourke 22. September 2008, 09:50

@clay36518: It is working right, just not how you were expecting

Tim J 22. September 2008, 22:34

I've rapidly switched to using the test version in preference to normal 4.1 most of the time, since it's currently so much faster. But is that just because of a low number of users?

Also it's showing that I REALLY need Opera Link to synch custom searches - the only reason I revert to normal 4.1 is to use the feeds and searches which I set up. Both are laborious to create. (I realise the feeds have been left out as a precaution.)

US server BTW.

mihailojankov 23. September 2008, 08:38

I use the global test mostly and it seems to be a bit faster than the regular OM4.1 that I also use regularly. As a matter of fact OM4.1 has been unstable lately. On many occasions it won't connect. I really appreciate this boost in speed with the global test. It mostly shows the [US] designation on all my phones.

Andres 24. September 2008, 01:27

I'm in Colombia, I've just installed it, it failed to install at first time, never ended "installing" then I tried again and it worked, now I'm loading Apple.com and it's fast ! wow, maybe not much people is using this server. I get [US].
Update:
It's not too fast, sometimes is and sometimes doesn't, sometimes freezes loading at [loading....33 of 104Kb....] so I have to reload, is very common problem, sometimes, most of them just works.

artcraft 24. September 2008, 02:36

Both 4.1 and Globaltest seem to work the same for me on the Nokia E62 and the E90, my workhorse handset.

After quite a few days of [EU] only for Globaltest the [US] server has returned.

Am very happy with Opera Mini and use it more than the default browsers on all my 'phones, past and present.

Keep up the good work.

RJDL 24. September 2008, 15:48

testing, the proxy I use is [EU]
xDD
It looks faster than normal Opera mini...
i'll be teting...
greetings! Rey

Dennis 27. September 2008, 06:04

So this test is over, now? I've not been able to use the test v. in over 24 hrs. :worried:

Kevin O'Rourke 27. September 2008, 09:27

I'm using it right now. Remember it's a test service though, so there can be downtime while we try things out.

artcraft 27. September 2008, 09:54

Globaltest has been down (for me) for about 1/2 a day, so far.

I just connect via Mini 4.1 as I'm doing now, when that happens. - Douglas

RJDL 27. September 2008, 11:06

Hey, the same for me..
I'd couldn't test the Global Test version, I dont know why.. I was on the [US] server, but 2 days ago I couldn't connet..

I'm in Venezuela, the company I use is Digitel, i'm using a Nokia 5310 XpressMusic...
I'm writting from the 4.1 Final Version
Greetings! Rey
=D

Dennis 27. September 2008, 11:26

@ Kevin: Any url gives me "failed to connect... 'click here to start the connection test' " which fails, as does the bug report page.

Nico Zandberg 27. September 2008, 20:59

Mine still working fine.

Dennis 28. September 2008, 01:35

And mine still doesn't work. :frown:

nickspro 28. September 2008, 07:42

this is great!

nickspro 28. September 2008, 07:45

this is great!(apik banget!)

nickspro 28. September 2008, 07:49

what is the new feature in OM global test?.i hope global test make OM beta v4.2 or v5.1.it must be great!

Dennis 28. September 2008, 07:55

No, this global test v. is to test the European and new U.S. servers.

Dennis 29. September 2008, 01:42

I have deleted the GTV, and attempted to re-install. I get "Failed to connect..." 2/3 through installing.

tinhoy 29. September 2008, 18:30

Using 4.1.12344, 20080908. It's working now, but wasn't a few days earlier, guess it was due to downtime.

The error message could be better though. :frown: The connection test led me to initially think that it was my phone's internet that was not working.

Dennis 29. September 2008, 18:50

Working now!

Santa Furie 2. October 2008, 11:10

Still no-one's noticed any new features. Okay, I'll give you a subtle hint - IT FAKES JAVASCRIPT NOW!

Santa Furie 2. October 2008, 11:11

:sst: By the way, what do I win?

Dennis 2. October 2008, 11:32

 You're lieing! :irked:

Santa Furie 2. October 2008, 15:23

Not lying dude. Try using the pull down menus in Opera's post creation page. It'll bring up a new page to simulate the script apparently.

Dennis 2. October 2008, 16:30

:eyes:

theoddbod 2. October 2008, 20:47

If only I could get the thing to connect...:frown:

Dennis 2. October 2008, 21:04

Still, Mart? :frown:

theoddbod 2. October 2008, 22:42

4.1's fine on the same phone...this version just hasn't connected successful except on day 1. Although I've only tried it a few times due to the lack of Synchronize.

theoddbod 2. October 2008, 22:44

And thanks to Mik I know have a compelling desire for it to connect awww

theoddbod 2. October 2008, 22:50

ok, this is just weird. It worked when I connected wirelessly to my home router, it just doesn't like my GPRS connection.

But now I can't see any difference despite Mik's clue

Santa Furie 3. October 2008, 13:07

I'm on it now but it's been playing silly buggers all morning. Basically, instead of the old "javascript not supported" black pop-ups that we used to get, now a screen loads enabling you to perform the action.

For example, when making a blog post I click to change the colour of text to red. This loads a new page where I can enter the text I want to be red. Once that's done and I've hit OK it adds that section to the post and takes you back to the main post creation page. :sst: To be honest I preferred it the way it used to be.

davidlarosa 3. October 2008, 17:44

Hi, I'm David from Jakarta, Indonesia. I've been using opera mini for about a year now. Been working very well on my se k810. And I found out this opera mini test works great as well.

theoddbod 3. October 2008, 20:40

I think I've got too used to just typing the code in...I haven't seen one of the 'javascript not supported' popups for months.

Barry schulman 11. October 2008, 22:10

Must admit the speed difference is outstanding. I'm connecting to us from south africa .Don't know if anyone else is experiencing this. whenever i'm entering a site that requires a password, ie facebook, gmail etc etc. When i enter the password for the site if i make a mistake and press clear button my opera just closes. This happens on 4.1 and new global test, why is this. It's very irritating. As often on keypad of cell you'll make mistake. I'm using nokia n70 me.

artcraft 12. October 2008, 00:52

My Global Test 4.1 runs [EU] and [US] servers back and forth now, equally well.

While I have the 2 Opera Mini browsers on this Symbian OS E90 Nokia, it's handy to run different URLs at the same time.

I guess these will eventually be merged into a single Mini, but for the time being it's very handy keeping one URL "open" while searching for something else or writing in WebMail. Global Test and regular Mini 4.1 share the same Bookmarks, so the transition from one browser to the other is simple.

Very happy with 4.1 and Global Test 4.1.

Keep up the good work! - Douglas

Barry schulman 12. October 2008, 20:32

Must say i've noticed a hell of an improvement in speed. The last 3 weeks or so opera 4.1 has become a pain in the a.... Seriously. I ended up using opera 8.6 for symbian rather. But with the new server i've seen an increase in speed that some pages are taking half the time to load. My question is will it remain this fast or when the test is over will we be returned to sad slow page delivery? We'll have to wait and see

graydw57 13. October 2008, 20:05

Interesting...

But noone has noticed, the test version isn't signed (a real PITA on an
AT&T phone). I'm back to having to OK each and every individual network connecttion...

[edit]
Arrrrrgh! Fugeddaboutit... Went back and downloaded the signed version and
all is well. Fooled me by not having the singed version first (is there any reason for that?)

Dennis 13. October 2008, 20:22

It's an intelligence test. p:

wade 14. October 2008, 03:04

for the most part it is much faster for me but i have gotten a good number of "oops" server errors

Dennis 14. October 2008, 04:00

Barry! Great comment!

Dennis 14. October 2008, 04:06

@ The fat lady: Theres alot of that going around!

Santa Furie 14. October 2008, 11:15

Not for me. p:

Vishwas 20. October 2008, 14:55

I have been using Global Test Mini since the day it was launched. But i didn't find anything new. Perhaps, because of the phone model which i'm using. My phone model is moto rokr z6.

Vishwas 20. October 2008, 15:00

Regarding the regular opera, i'm unable to open any page with more than 250 kb. Is it not possible to increase the application size so that you can add more utilities.

artcraft 20. October 2008, 15:41

Global Test Mini dropped the Speed Dial addresses on the Start Page, from 4.1 - but kept the Bookmarks and History.

This is no big thing but I use Speed Dial (those 9 URLs) throughout the day and on Opera 9.6 for the computer. Thus, for the time being I'm running 4.1 about 85% of the time.

Regards, Douglas - on the Nokia E90

Barry schulman 20. October 2008, 17:19

Oh yeah i see my last comment was very insightful. Well there you go thats a bug. Cause that was a pic i uploaded to my page. Dunno how it got there

Dennis 20. October 2008, 21:00

Does your phone support copy/paste? It might have been "operator error" p:
