Help us test our new US data centre
By Kevin O. Monday, 8. September 2008, 13:58:14
To make this work we've had to make some changes in the Opera Mini server software. We need your help to test the system before we trust it with all the Opera Mini users (because that's a lot of people).
So, if you want to help you just need to download and install a special version of Opera Mini 4.1. It can be installed on your phone at the same time as the normal version. You can find it here:
http://mini.opera.com/globaltest/
Edit: The test client is called "Mini Global Test".
The main difference you'll probably notice is that page titles are all prefixed by either "[EU]" or "[US]" depending on which data centre you're currently using. You'll be allocated to one or another depending on where you are in the world and which is busier. There are some other changes and I'm curious to see if you spot them
Remember, this is a test so it might not always work correctly, we might sometimes have to make changes or fix things. You should keep your normal Opera Mini around as well.

Was getting both server indicators for a while.
This is probably not important.

Also it's showing that I REALLY need Opera Link to synch custom searches - the only reason I revert to normal 4.1 is to use the feeds and searches which I set up. Both are laborious to create. (I realise the feeds have been left out as a precaution.)
US server BTW.

Update:
It's not too fast, sometimes is and sometimes doesn't, sometimes freezes loading at [loading....33 of 104Kb....] so I have to reload, is very common problem, sometimes, most of them just works.

After quite a few days of [EU] only for Globaltest the [US] server has returned.
Am very happy with Opera Mini and use it more than the default browsers on all my 'phones, past and present.
Keep up the good work.

For example, when making a blog post I click to change the colour of text to red. This loads a new page where I can enter the text I want to be red. Once that's done and I've hit OK it adds that section to the post and takes you back to the main post creation page.

While I have the 2 Opera Mini browsers on this Symbian OS E90 Nokia, it's handy to run different URLs at the same time.
I guess these will eventually be merged into a single Mini, but for the time being it's very handy keeping one URL "open" while searching for something else or writing in WebMail. Global Test and regular Mini 4.1 share the same Bookmarks, so the transition from one browser to the other is simple.
Very happy with 4.1 and Global Test 4.1.
Keep up the good work! - Douglas

But noone has noticed, the test version isn't signed (a real PITA on an
AT&T phone). I'm back to having to OK each and every individual network connecttion...
[edit]
Arrrrrgh! Fugeddaboutit... Went back and downloaded the signed version and
all is well. Fooled me by not having the singed version first (is there any reason for that?)

This is no big thing but I use Speed Dial (those 9 URLs) throughout the day and on Opera 9.6 for the computer. Thus, for the time being I'm running 4.1 about 85% of the time.
