Opera Mini 5.1 released today!
By Marian Hmarianh. Thursday, July 8, 2010 5:39:06 AM
With this milestone comes some even more exciting news - Opera Mini 5.1 for Java phones is here, an update to breathe new life in to low memory and small screen phones!
This update gives a new skin to devices with low resolution screens, and Nokia series 40 phones with low memory. For these devices, the new skin improves memory usage and usability, reducing the frequency of "out of memory" issues encountered.
Who should download this update?
If your phone's screen resolution is less than 200 pixels in either direction, or if you have a Nokia Series 40 phone with low memory (around 4MB or less), then you will receive the new skin. Opera Mini automatically selects the skin that's right for you!
We've also added a keypad shortcut to switch to and from Mobile view (*0).
The update is not critical for Opera Mini users on Blackberries, smartphones or high end devices.
As always, we welcome your feedback here in our forum, and please report any bugs in our bug report wizard. Thanks!
Regards,
The Opera Mini team

Agreed. Jit, Caracan, Vega and HW FTW!
I'm sure Opera 11 is in the works with most likely all of these functions, and probably is shedulled to come out around opera 11 desktop (which I'd guess is around september-october).
Lets cross our fingers!

What's lame is not understanding that there's nothing wrong with a version aimed at specific devices.

Well, this update is 'silent' and must fix everything because is the last beta for j2me platform so you are close, very close

Opera mini 5.1 interface is ugly and heavy insted of compact and simple menu in 4.2.
Also, there was very usefull context menu in 4.2, but where it's now??

Phone Tested: Sanyo SCP 3800 (Katana LX)
http://www.phonenews.com/phones/index.php/Sanyo_SCP-3800_Katana_LX
http://www.mobilemultimedia.be/en/specifications/Sanyo-SCP3800-3279.html
This device has only a few megabytes of memory, slow CPU and 120x160 screen.
5.1 is nearly twice as fast as 5.0, roughly as fast as 3. (4.x does not work on this device, network detection issue) I have had no real reason to use fullscreen edit, no idea whether there are any bugs with it.
1) Feeds work fine as a speeddial entry. Put feed://list in a speeddial slot, or visit feeds from Bookmarks, copy/paste URL into a speedial slot. Works great.
2) Link still works great, but now there is an Opera Mini folder in your desktop/MyOpera Link panels. Copy anything you want on your phone into that folder.
3) Holding down the select button opens a nice context menu
4) *0 now switches between Full and Mobile Views.
5) *# now switches between Landscape and Portait Views.
6) ** now switches between Fullscreen and Normal Views.
7) *UP creates a new tab, *DOWN closes a tab.
8) *LEFT and *RIGHT move between tabs without opening menu.
If Mini 4 had tabs and advanced copy/paste/search, it would not be any faster or lighter than Mini 5. That is the cost of adding features. Even on a moderately weak phone like the Katana LX, Mini 5.1 is a pleasure to use and big improvement over Mini 5.0, many thanks to the devs!

Would I love "tabs" and an enhanced interface? Sure, but not at the sacrifice of basic functionality and a 10X performance drop. No thanks.
I'm a big Opera Mini fan and have been since before OM3. I'm just not an OM5 fan.

Worst shortcut ever! Why not assign Feeds to "*0" (which is a sort of bookmark) and Mobile view to "1" c-menu, as in good old Opera Mini 4?

As for those who want a keyboard shortcut for feeds, putting the feed://list link into a speeddial slot will allow you to use that dial number to open your feeds. (slot #1 = *1, slot #5 = *5, just like that)
** goes fullscreen, hiding the "heavy" menu
*0 is used for desktop/mobile switch because previous versions didn't have one. Same as the 5 key is used for zooming in desktop mode.
