Opera Powered Wrist Straps!

, ,

Opera Mini recently celebrated its first birthday! As part of the celebrations we gave away 1000 "Opera Powered" wrist straps

Today the hard work started for the Opera team. Global PR Manager Thomas Ford (busy licking glue off envelopes to the left), and PR Specialist Stacey Cameron from Opera MarCom got down on their knees (:eyes:), and with determination they managed to get all wrist straps shipped off to their respective owners in only 2 hours!

We were present and captured the moment for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy!

Adding support for the T-Mobile Dash and additional Motorola phones

We’re putting on the final touches for Opera Mini 3.1. This version will add new features and support for additional phones, and of course bug fixes. Opera Mini 3.1 adds support for the following devices: T-Mobile Dash, Motorola i275, i850, i860, and i870 (iDEN). You'll be able to download it soon at www.operamini.com

Testing Opera Mini in the USA

Our former test manager for Opera Mini, Marianne Spilling, temporarily relocated herself to Opera’s US branch in San Diego. Her primary job here is to test and make sure that our baby, Opera Mini, works well with US cellphones and services.

If you know of certain phones that don’t work properly with Opera Mini, please let us know about it -- file a bug report. We’d like to get Opera Mini to work on as many mobile phones as possible.

If you hang out in the Opera Mini forums, you most likely have noticed Marianne. With over 2,500 forum posts, she’s constantly troubleshooting Opera Mini-related issues. Marianne had a rough welcome to San Diego; she experienced one of those California earthquakes last week.

Developer answers, part 1

Even though your rendering removes horizontal scrolling, are you looking at ways to better utilize trackballs in some mobiles? BB Pearl, Sidekick, several others take a step to move beyond the D-Pad in most mobile phones, it would be nice if Opera can keep up with them. (Eddie_Lopez)

The BlackBerry Pearl trackball has wonderful speed and precision. We think we can make even better use of it in the future.

What is the makeup of the development team? How many "core" developers do you have and how many other teams contribute.. ie- how large is the project? (Eddie_Lopez)

The main roles in the "core mini" engineering team are: client developers, client quality assurance (supporting 600+ devices is a lot of work!), server developers, server quality assurance, system administrators, delivery managers and project managers.

In addition to these we use a lot of resources provided by other teams in Opera. The translation team helps us translate Opera Mini into 35+ languages. We use the same Opera Core as e.g. the desktop Opera, but on the serverside.

Will there ever be support for a 90-degrees rotated mode? (tinhoy)

The main reason that we have not done this so far is that it currently is not possible to rotate the dialogs and prompts provided by the phone's UI. Thanks to the SSR rendering there is also relatively little benefit in making the screen 20% wider, compared to when using regular rendering.

We are however keeping our options open on this issue.

Generally speaking...are vendors coming to you guys? Or are you shopping Mini out to all the vendors? (Eddie_Lopez)

It's a combination. Opera Software of course has many well-established lines of communications with manufacturers and operators, having been in the mobile browsing business for quite some time now. There are also many cases of companies coming to us. Meeting a new operator/manufacturer for the first time only to realize that the people there are hardcore Opera Mini fans happens fairly regularly, and it does give your a warm fuzzy feeling.

Keep the questions coming!

Finally, here's an action shot of one of the main developers (Mr White) celebrating the birthday in front of the Opera Software office in Linköping, Sweden:

Opera Mini turns one

Opera Mini just had it's first birthday and we're celebrating. :hat:

Opera Mini was introduced to the world one year ago. Since that time, Mini has changed the way people and companies think about the mobile Web. And it's all down to you.

We're saying thanks 10 million times tomorrow to celebrate the 10 million of you who use Opera Mini. This day is more about you than us. We make a product, but that product only matters when someone uses it. It's amazing to be part of it.

So tomorrow we'll have a little celebration here, a little "ask the developers session" (feel free to post your questions as comments to this blog post and we'll answer them here), and maybe a few chances to win some Opera goodies along the way. It's our way of saying we appreciate you.

We've had a tremendous ride along the way with all of you and look forward to all the great things to come.

PS - Be on the lookout for the Opera Ninja tomorrow.

Edit: First batch of answers here

Yahoo! Search in your Mini

Opera Software and Yahoo! today announced (Opera, Yahoo!) a new partnership for mobile search.

New downloads from operamini.com will come with Y! search preinstalled in the built in homepage. We will also soon start switching existing users to Y! Search. (So don't be alarmed when the search logo on the homepage suddenly changes. It's supposed to do that.)

Thanks to the Yahoo! Mobile team for their swift work during the past few weeks!
