Opera Mobile

A note about the leaked build

,

To those who have chosen to download and install the Opera Mobile 9.5 build that leaked on to the internet, please note the following:

This is a pre-alpha version, and does not in any way reflect the quality of an official Opera release. It can cause data loss, harm your mobile device and accidentally kill your cat and love life. Don't complain to us when this happens.

Fair enough.

It's miles better than any other client side web browser for the WM platform. I've managed to get ad-blocking working by copying the urlfilter.ini file from the desktop.

The only missing piece is the fit to width as used by Opera Mini. Where paragraphs, tables, columns, pictures, etc are reflowed to fit the screen.

Dark FurieFurie Friday, February 15, 2008 4:52:47 PM

And where could we find this leaked version? Just so that we can tell whoever off for leaking it, obviously. leftright

LOL
15 February, Oslo, Norway.
Opera announce completely new pre-alpha ver. Opera Mobile 9.5 (codename "Killer").
BTW, I want to harm my phone and kill my card, could you give me the version for symbian?

pdx77 Friday, February 15, 2008 9:17:21 PM

Even thought this is a pre Alpha (9.00 build 331) I am quite impresssed with it and once Opera 9.50 beta comes out it'll deftinitly be my main browser... Keep up the good work.

SreenivasanSreeramu Saturday, February 16, 2008 10:05:01 AM

can i know something how it as been leaked without your knowledge....??????
so to protect all other opera mobile who at present using leaked opera mobile 9.33 you should release the official version soon.....

Haavardhaavard Saturday, February 16, 2008 12:51:53 PM

It doesn't take more than one dishonest person to leak something.

As for releasing something officially, I don't see how anyone would be protected by releasing an unfinished version. It won't magically get less bugs just because there was a leak wink

Dark FurieFurie Saturday, February 16, 2008 2:21:33 PM

Sreeramu, it's not just Opera who will have a hold of that particular version. Some web developers and some handset manufacturers will too in order to integrate it better with their devices. As Haavard says, it only takes one to leak it.

But it's a testament to how good the final product will be that such an early version was thought good enough to leak already. I'd love to see the full version, but I'm more than willing to wait until it's ready rather than have a bug ridden one.

Having said that I can't wait for the public beta test.

It's pre Alpha release, how can you claim it's Bad? of course there's going to be bugs and features missing. Just wait untill the public beta comes out and reserve your judgement until then.

torgeirl Sunday, February 17, 2008 10:25:40 AM

The public beta is taking too long! sad

Dark FurieFurie Sunday, February 17, 2008 10:39:23 AM

Sigmund, a beta test is to help get rid of unforseen bugs and problems. Before that can be done they have to get rid of the ones they know about.

Perhaps your impatience comes from your childhood. Tell me about your mother...

I think that opera is making late to release opera mobile 9.55 so any one find the leaked version for symbian mobiles....

Robrecht writes: I couldn't resist installing and testing one of the leaked versions and I must say it's absolutely great. I'll definitely be buying the final version when it comes out. There are a couple of issues though. I have a Toshiba g900, so far the only Windows Mobile device with a wvga (800x480) screen, and I get a lot of glitches during operation: thin horizontal lines that flash onto the screen and disappear, while the screen seems to quickly jump up or down. What's more, landscape mode doesn't work at all on my device: all I get is a jumbled display. I really hope the final version will be optimized for wvga devices!! With Sony's Xperia on its way, and more wvga phones after that, it's a growing market! Thanks in advance.

tlz Sunday, March 2, 2008 12:20:49 AM

Like many others I couldn't resist to not try it. (And I wasn't really afraid, I'm running weekly build on my desktop anyway p).

Although not by far as usable as Opera Mini 4, I found it to be better than anything else I've tried(NetFront Tech Preview, Opera 8.54, and the horrific PIE) on Windows Mobile.

Looking forward to a more mature verison of this! smile

btw. I think most people would understand that stuff that's not officialy releseased is risky stuff. I also think you(Opera guys) are handeling the leak on a good way. Not trying to demonize anyone, just warning about the risks.

"Even for a pre Alpha version this seems to be really bad browser."
I have to disagree, I see it the completely other way around.
You have to take it for what it is, PRE-alpha. You can't judge products on that... even Alpha's can be quite unstable.

whistle Beta - the devil you know...

I think we are many people who wants to know if Opera Mobile 9.5 will support WM6 Standard aswell (or will there only be a PPC version)???

RusDizM Saturday, March 15, 2008 8:24:03 AM

owziee
Time will show;)
Believe, for you it is poorly pleasant. marvel at the touch-screen surfing.
But still, which will be useful for standard, Rendering speed and navigation ultra-fast! Not compare with nothing.

As soon as it hits the store (where I can buy it without a creditcard) I buy it!!!! The money is already reserved. Normally I do not use beta for long, just to watch the development in the world. In this case there is no alternative!! A great humble bow to the development team!! I see tuesday as a release date, as far as I can see, it wasn't this tuesday, so perhaps next tuesday. Small remark, Every page is displayed as normal, while in some cases I want to identify as a mobile device and get the mobile version. I haven't found a setting to accomplish this.

Well it seems this is all targeted at the 9.5 release. Where do we go for help with the 8.65 pocket pc 2003se version's stability issues? This thing crashes every time, about 5 seconds after it opens. :-(

Kat writes: Cant wait for the official release. What i noticed was that, when things get leaked early, it is sometimes a finished version but when the creators see all the complaints, they dont release the official so they can try to work out all the complaints from the "leaked copy". sometimes the community benefits a lot from leaks. Rather than "crappy officials".

Haavardhaavard Saturday, May 10, 2008 5:05:28 PM

The leaked build was nowhere near completion. It was an early alpha (possibly pre-alpha).

Viditviditbhargava Friday, May 23, 2008 9:00:34 PM

how can i get the mobile 9.50 beta? where was it "leaked"?
im kinda late at this sad but i still wanna try it...i want this on my P1i...using 8.65 and mini 4.1

Kevin1a Monday, June 30, 2008 6:43:40 AM

Having taken the alpha for a spin on my spare device (don't care if I break it) I shall wait patiently for the public beta to arive. All I can say is that it looks very promising and keep up the good work. A few ideas.

1. Anyone remember that iPod simulator from Stardock for the pocket pc. How you could spin the wheel on the screen with your finger just like a real iPod. Variable zooming should be this easy in a mobile browser especially since we don't have multitouch.

2. Make it fullscreen. It is probably just an alpha bug, but sometimes the title bar (not just the addressbar and stuff) is visible.

3. Wait for the giant cake I would ship to your office if I had money. smile
