Opera Mobile

for Symbian and Windows Mobile

A few final bugs...

, , ,

Some things in life don't go according to plan -- at least not in software development. We knew when we announced a release date before we finished development that a showstopper bug might be found that could alter the actual date we release the beta.

As you can imagine, we encountered a few bugs last week that we needed to fix before we launch. Our engineering team worked through the weekend to fix the bugs. Even though our release is a beta, we'd rather spend the extra time to fix them, thus giving you a better experience. The fixes are almost complete now, but we need two more days to run the build through our quality assurance testing. The new launch date is now set for the 17th.

We're disappointed to delay, but fixing these bugs will improve the experience with our beta and let you fully test the browser.

Leave no platform behindThe day finally arrives

Qasibr 14. July 2008, 16:40

Well, atleast you kept us informed on this. Thanks! No big deal at all.

Hades32 14. July 2008, 17:28

Damn, I just uninstalled the leaked 9.5 :frown:
But better this way then giving us a bug ridden browser.

PS: As I understand Opera9.5Mobile supports the new flash lite 3, but it doesn't contain it. Only OEMs etc can install this. Will we get a flash lite installer from you? As far as I know Adobe didn't release a WiMo version yet...

fhauge. Can you give us a list of Windows Mobile versions that are supported with the new beta release?

Thanks for the update, Frode! A few more days wait is better than releasing something with problems you already have identified.

I look forward to Thursday's release with great anticipation!

I knew this was coming. In the 17th this will be delayed again, I bet.

As they wait for the 9.5, the Opera Mini Java applet works very well...I have been using both on my Kaiser and the Mini is actually a lot faster and so far bug free.

LouMessina 15. July 2008, 01:41

What are you doing, adding a washer/dryer?

greencloudz 15. July 2008, 02:15

Thanks fhauge. Good Briefing.
That's totally cool, and we'll all look forward to a properly tested out product, which with luck will be forThursday.

Disappointed. Willcom 03 Japan's offer to provide the public was disappointed not to have a reaction.

that is all it needs to crush all the competition in all aspects

I don't think that flash support is really a software issue as much as it is a hardware one. Even the latest phones out there don't have enough processor power to smoothly play flash content.

OPERA YOUR AS BAD AS SKYFIRE WITH ALL YOUR BULLSHIT DEADLINES!!!!! DON'T SET A DEADLINE IF U CAN'T MEET IT!

yorksaint 15. July 2008, 07:28

No probs! (But then I'm waiting for the S60 v3 variant) :D

Qasibr 15. July 2008, 08:32

What the heck. What's with the stupid anonymous comments putting Opera down for being unable to meet the deadline?

Alot of companies miss deadlines, and they do it leaving their end users confused and in the dark about the reasons why the product was delayed, and when people might expect a release. Opera did a good thing by letting us know, this is something to be appreciated and encouraged, not commented upon by people with broken caps locks.

I'd prefer to be given a rough release date that was only slightly off, rather than feeling hopeless and being kept in the dark. We all probably would. Let's not give Opera a reason to start keeping us in the dark again.

Neh... I've been anticipating Opera Mobile 9.5 for sooo long, and only now did I realize it won't be coming to my S60 phone yet! I *must* start paying more attention to these blogs.

And we bought a new S60 phone just a couple of weeks ago to test out a new, mobile interface - I can assure you, had I known about this up front I would've suggested a windows mobile :) I really wanted to test the interface from OM 9.5.

Missing a deadline is no big deal, but to tell you my honest opinion I am disappointed because you missed the deadline...AGAIN.

I remember reading a post on this very blog saying something like "the public beta is just around the corner, we just need to fix some more bugs. But this is a minor delay, I am talking weeks, not months!" That was in March if I remember correctly, it's been quite a few weeks since then...

Of course fixing bugs is important, but you will never ever get the software absolutely bug-free, and no one expects you to, either. Even more so since it's a beta version.

Most of us use entire ROMs that are home-cooked and frankensteined from other devices on a daily basis! I honestly cannot remember the last time my device really worked 100% as expected. Nontheless I greatly value the added functionality of this aftermarket software and gladly accept that it's not perfect.

So please do us all a favour and stop making excuses. Mark the archive a pre-alpha technology preview snapshot if you must, but give us a download link already.

Anyone else starting to notice the stench of VaporWare around here...?

Listen up!

I will want to purchase Opera 9.5 mobile as part of your beta program, because I do not currently own a Opera license.

Others may already own a previous license and are interested in how the upgrade will be implemented.

So can up please explain how this will work.
Thanks

GoJoeGo 15. July 2008, 14:32

@Bastler: you seem to know a lot about exactly what kind of bugs they were having problems with since you speak with such authority on how they cannot possibly be serious enough to block the release...

Nah, I'm sure they are just teasing us on purpose. They are probably lying about there being bugs just to have an excuse for torturing us! :D

To the Anonymous poster complaning about how Opera missed a deadline, and that they shouldn't set one if they can't meet it.... this is why companies hate setting deadlines, often times things do come up and it gets pushed back... You either get bitched at if you don't mention any type of deadline, or if you set a deadline you get bitched out at because often times you can't meet it.

Have you ever written software before as complex as a mobile web browser?

kdwhit 15. July 2008, 23:05

How do I sign up to use the beta when it's released?

GoJoeGo 16. July 2008, 07:17

@kdwhit: Opera normally doesn't require you to sign up for betas. You just download them directly.

Garion 16. July 2008, 07:27

And @ all the carefully anonymous complainants - if you'd read the blog properly, you'd see that the 15th was mentioned as the target date, not 'this is the release date'...
