Updated beta1
By Frode Haugefhauge. Tuesday, July 29, 2008 1:15:22 PM
There have been reports of OOM (Out of Memory) problems on some devices. Phil Nickinson over at WMExperts.com have suggested a workaround to avoid this problem. By changing the location of the folder where Opera stores the cache-files, more memory is available for Opera.
Please note that depending on the speed of the memory card, Opera might perform slower and you will probably experience some delays when Opera reads and writes to the cache.
Edit: Please be sure to uninstall the previous beta-version before installing the new one. You can find more detailed instructions in this forum thread.

Will it also fix the notifications problem when already being "infected" by this bug due to installation of the previous problem? If not, how do I get my notifications back in working order?
Thankz!
Vincent
Ps. Other people also have a less responding standy/power off switch since previous version? Sometimes I have to actually exit Opera before I can put my phone in standy of power it off.

Thanks for the fix, Opera, so that we can keep testing.

This also lets everyone know that the app's under active development, so more betas would probably be coming soon. I hope this is the nudge Opera seems to be needing to work on and release their own S60 beta.

Now people start writing about the "current beta1", and nobody knows which version they mean.
Please increase the version numbers if you release a new version. Even if it's still a beta.

The notifications are there. The browser is almost perfect. Thank you!
Right now the only annoying thing is the switch to the default IME.
This little thing stops me from using the browser more frequently while on the go. (and testing & providing more feedback too)
If fact, the alternate keyboard that I use (and switch to it manually every time) doesn't bring any problems with Opera Mobile 9.5. I type Cyrillic text almost everywhere (web forms, find in page, web search, etc.) and it works fine. The only "issue" is that I have to switch to it every time I want to type, and it is about 8-10 times during a web session with Opera.
Why don't you update the beta once again, for example with an option not to switch and popup the default ime.
P.S. Another note: You will add later the option for adding additional searches to the search box (e.g. wikipedia), isn't it?

I have a HTC P3300 (Artemis) running WM5.
I completely uninstalled the previous version of opera before running the updated beta.
Still no notifications and actually I'm coming to the point of having to (once again) completely hard reset my device (and having to reinstall al software again), because it really is annoying.
Is it possible for you to make a beta that can also fix what the previous version has caused in stead of a version that will only "not cause" the problems.
Am I making sence? My english is quite well, but has become a bit rusty over many years of not having to use it
Furthermore some more bugs (as an extra?):
- Most of the time cannot use power/standby button when opera is "in front / maximized". can't turn power off.
- Opera closes itself down whenever it feels like it wants to. When having nothing open I can't click on anything else but opera, since when I close the other application, Opera (in background) will almost always be gone.
- Opera has cause my backlight to go out completely (no, not dimmed: COMPLETELY out), unabling me to see anything on the screen. I know it's still on because I can see very vague images and when I really press the standby button off/on the screen gets a bit more dark and a little lighter again. Screen gets so dark I have to reset cause I can't locate the "lighting" menu.
- Still nothing on the Out Of Memory glitch? The "workaround" is (sorry to say) only a delay of execution leaving it a little more memory to fill up to the brim./

While using Opera Mobile in landscape mode (sliding-out the keyboard on the kaiser), afrer I close Opera or simply switch to another application, the screen rotates back to 90-degrees...

Opera has stated that installing it on your storage card may cause issues so you may need to re-install it to memory. Which of course means you will need to delete some other programs. Frankly, you will need closer to 25mb of free space for it to run more efficiently. Secondly, Opera is providing you with a mobile browser that goes to the full web and will search for for web pages, not mobile sites first. So there settings are accurate. You may want to try Opera Mini instead due to your resource constraints. IE Mobile is designed to go to the mobile site first and in many cases Opera mini does the same thing. Hopefully in future betas Opera Mobile 9.5 will address the memory issues but they may be able to. This robust browser may just be more suited to newer devices like the Diamond. Good luck.

That way, Symbian users won't feel that Opera's abandoned Symbian development and is instead focusing on creating implementations of Mobile 9.5 for various windows mobile device manufacturers.

Opera is adding Symbian OS Programmers to the staff. If they can come up with an UI that can compete with touch, then they got a winner. It's about clicks, max 2 clicks to content of interest. Present non touch is not competitive. Want average 5 clicks ?

And if you're right, investor, and they still have to come up with a UI for Symbian, it'll be very likely that we'll have to wait a number of months before getting our hands on anything more tangible than hope and comforting promises. I really wonder what their Symbian team's been up to these past two years.

The last thing we'd want is to go back to a couple of months of complete and utter silence, like we used to have, with cycles of broken expectations and disappointment, to people coming up with anticipated release dates they just made up themselves that got everyone's expectations up again, and then back to broken expectations and disappointment when those dates just went by and nothing ever happened.
If you guys think you don't have something newsworthy enough yet, something that'd warrant a blog post of it's own, how about just letting us in the loop by posting a comment every now and then, just telling us how the work's been going on the Symbian front. Maybe Opera's Symbian developers could participate in the discussion a bit, even some technical news and info would be appreciated. Some of the people here are pretty tech savvy. And maybe, if you could, just give us a relatively vague beta release date like the winmo guys got. Like say, should we expect a Symbian release by November or October, or even if it'd take you guys till early or mid '09. Knowing makes it easier, because then you know what to expect and don't have unrealistic expectations. That way, you won't have people hoping, expecting, and waiting for a release that they think they'd get any day now.
I think I'm being very objective and reasonable here. Just tell me if and where I'm wrong. I know and understand that Opera doesn't owe us anything and doesn't have to tell us a single thing. However, we don't have to be fans of Opera's products either, but we are. Respecting and appreciating that, and giving us some info like Opera did earlier, would be very nice, kind and polite on Opera's part. We'd really appreciate it.

Skyfire's system/functional model is very centralized, just like Mini's, and that causes a number of vulnerabilities. For one, if the center goes down or is inaccessible, the whole system falls appart. Opera Mini stopped working for me and alot of other people, for over a week. Their forums were filled with people trying to figure out what was wrong. To Opera's credit, they were very helpful and got the problem fixed, even though they didn't cause it. Some govt agency had blocked Mini's servers. Skyfire and Mini are vulnerable to this sort of stuff.
That's one reason why Opera Mobile is still very relevant and important. And there are alot of other reasons. I wanted to download a big file the other day, and using Mini, I couldn't do anything else while the file downloaded. So I exited Mini and used Mobile 8.65, which is two years old. And I had four tabs open while simultaneously downloading stuff.
There certainly is stuff Mini is good at, but Opera Mobile is in a completely different class when it comes to alot of stuff. That's why I really want to see the new version, and have been checking up on their forums for it since mid 2006.
