Opera Mobile

for Symbian and Windows Mobile

Updated beta1

, ,

We have updated the beta1 with a fix for the (very annoying) bug that turned off the notification sounds. The notification bugfix was relatively trivial and had a low risk. We are aware of the other bugs and issues, but these aren't adressed in this update.

There have been reports of OOM (Out of Memory) problems on some devices. Phil Nickinson over at WMExperts.com have suggested a workaround to avoid this problem. By changing the location of the folder where Opera stores the cache-files, more memory is available for Opera.
Please note that depending on the speed of the memory card, Opera might perform slower and you will probably experience some delays when Opera reads and writes to the cache.

Edit: Please be sure to uninstall the previous beta-version before installing the new one. You can find more detailed instructions in this forum thread.

I'll update first thing when I'm home

Will it also fix the notifications problem when already being "infected" by this bug due to installation of the previous problem? If not, how do I get my notifications back in working order?

Thankz!
Vincent

Ps. Other people also have a less responding standy/power off switch since previous version? Sometimes I have to actually exit Opera before I can put my phone in standy of power it off.

nonabble 29. July 2008, 14:10

This did NOT fix the Notifications bug for me (AT&T 8925 Tilt) :frown:

Hey guys. I have an HTC Hermes (ATT 8525) and this release did in fact fix the issue. What you need to do is completely uninstall the original beta release. First Remove it by going to Remove Programs, then go to File explorer, and view program files and application data on your device and even check your storage card and make sure there is no Opera 9 file listed, if so delete it. Lastly go to windows folder in My Device and remove the opera file. Once you completely remove it, then reinstall this new release and it will work. I have all of my notifications again listed before and after loading and running the new beta release. I hope this helps.

Rob 29. July 2008, 16:11

Simply uninstalling the old version and restarting the device worked on my phone (AT&T Tilt/8925, OE WM6 rom). I would imagine that's all most people need to do, rather than searching for files and folders to delete.

rileyd5 29. July 2008, 17:18

sounds good robbyb413. that makes more sense.

It fixed the issue on my HTC Touch (Vogue)! Great job resolving this quickly. Now, if the issue of defaulting to the standard keyboard could be fixed, I'd be able to use it without grinding my teeth. I prefer TouchPal, which is apparently compatible, because I can choose it and use it each time, but every time I click on a text field, it goes back to popping up the default windows mobile keyboard. I saw the previous blog post on the keyboard issue, but it seems to me that if it is compatible, that it could simply remember the last sip I chose.

max1274 29. July 2008, 18:30

I have done what robby413 suggested, as well as some other variations, but still having the problem.

HTCTouchMyself 29. July 2008, 18:57

The fix did not work on my HTC Touch (Vogue), but I did recently upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.1. Perhaps this is part of the issue. Pete, is your Vogue running Windows Mobile 6.0 or 6.1? Has anyone else noticed anything like this?

Anonymous 29. July 2008, 19:11

Pete writes:

@HTCTouchMyself, my Vogue is running wm6.0, so perhaps it is a compatibility issue with 6.1.

Petehead 29. July 2008, 19:36

My name is also Pete and I'm also using a Touch (Vogue). I'm running 6.1 and this did work for me. I made sure to uninstall and delete the opera files that were hanging around in Windows.

Thanks for the fix, Opera, so that we can keep testing.

rileyd5 30. July 2008, 04:57

Yes please check all 3 folders on your device which are the program, application data, and Windows folder. I found opera files in all of them and deleted them before installing the revised build.

This fix didn't resolve the issue. Before the current release from 2008-07-29, I was using a release that was 2 or 3 weeks old or something like that. That one worked fine and didn't clear my notifications.

But, with the current release I have the exact bug everyone describes.

Device is a MDA Vario 3 alias HTC Kaiser/Tytn II

HTCTouchMyself 30. July 2008, 23:16

I got the update to work, but I had to uninstall everything that said Opera, including Opera 8.65 that came packaged with the new Sprint ROM. Now it's working great! Thanks everyone!

Qasim 31. July 2008, 01:55

All you Symbian users, here's something that might cheer you up. Skyfire for S60's beta has been released. Admittedly, it is a limited beta, so if you're interested, you'd have to google around a bit to land some invites.

This also lets everyone know that the app's under active development, so more betas would probably be coming soon. I hope this is the nudge Opera seems to be needing to work on and release their own S60 beta.

May I ask why this version is called "updated beta1"? Aren't there enough numbers that are bigger than 1?

Now people start writing about the "current beta1", and nobody knows which version they mean.

Please increase the version numbers if you release a new version. Even if it's still a beta.

mhalachev 3. August 2008, 10:25

It worked on the kaiser after uninstall and restart.
The notifications are there. The browser is almost perfect. Thank you!

Right now the only annoying thing is the switch to the default IME.
This little thing stops me from using the browser more frequently while on the go. (and testing & providing more feedback too)

If fact, the alternate keyboard that I use (and switch to it manually every time) doesn't bring any problems with Opera Mobile 9.5. I type Cyrillic text almost everywhere (web forms, find in page, web search, etc.) and it works fine. The only "issue" is that I have to switch to it every time I want to type, and it is about 8-10 times during a web session with Opera. :D

Why don't you update the beta once again, for example with an option not to switch and popup the default ime.

P.S. Another note: You will add later the option for adding additional searches to the search box (e.g. wikipedia), isn't it? :eyes:

Does anyone else have problems with opera closing other programs when launched?

Vincent 5. August 2008, 12:57

I was the first to comment, and I did install the new version of the beta.

I have a HTC P3300 (Artemis) running WM5.
I completely uninstalled the previous version of opera before running the updated beta.

Still no notifications and actually I'm coming to the point of having to (once again) completely hard reset my device (and having to reinstall al software again), because it really is annoying.

Is it possible for you to make a beta that can also fix what the previous version has caused in stead of a version that will only "not cause" the problems.

Am I making sence? My english is quite well, but has become a bit rusty over many years of not having to use it awww

Furthermore some more bugs (as an extra?):
- Most of the time cannot use power/standby button when opera is "in front / maximized". can't turn power off.
- Opera closes itself down whenever it feels like it wants to. When having nothing open I can't click on anything else but opera, since when I close the other application, Opera (in background) will almost always be gone.
- Opera has cause my backlight to go out completely (no, not dimmed: COMPLETELY out), unabling me to see anything on the screen. I know it's still on because I can see very vague images and when I really press the standby button off/on the screen gets a bit more dark and a little lighter again. Screen gets so dark I have to reset cause I can't locate the "lighting" menu.
- Still nothing on the Out Of Memory glitch? The "workaround" is (sorry to say) only a delay of execution leaving it a little more memory to fill up to the brim./

mhalachev 6. August 2008, 19:25

Talking of bugs and ussues...
While using Opera Mobile in landscape mode (sliding-out the keyboard on the kaiser), afrer I close Opera or simply switch to another application, the screen rotates back to 90-degrees...

I have a T-Mobile wing with around 12 MB "program memory" free and 8 MB "Storage memory" free. I also have a 2 GB micro SD card which is free except for 8 MB where I have installed Opera Mobile 9.5 beta. I still see the "Out of memory" messages and it closes itself after some time.

Another issue that I have seen is that if I go to http://www.msnbc.com, it doesn't open the mobile version of the site. It tries to open the regular version. On IE, it opens up the right mobile version. Is Opera Mobile not setting the right headers in its requests?

rileyd5 8. August 2008, 20:35

Hello,

Opera has stated that installing it on your storage card may cause issues so you may need to re-install it to memory. Which of course means you will need to delete some other programs. Frankly, you will need closer to 25mb of free space for it to run more efficiently. Secondly, Opera is providing you with a mobile browser that goes to the full web and will search for for web pages, not mobile sites first. So there settings are accurate. You may want to try Opera Mini instead due to your resource constraints. IE Mobile is designed to go to the mobile site first and in many cases Opera mini does the same thing. Hopefully in future betas Opera Mobile 9.5 will address the memory issues but they may be able to. This robust browser may just be more suited to newer devices like the Diamond. Good luck.

It's been around a month since the winmo beta1 release, why not keep us up to date on how the work's going, what the major problems are, and roughly when we could get our hands on the beta.

That way, Symbian users won't feel that Opera's abandoned Symbian development and is instead focusing on creating implementations of Mobile 9.5 for various windows mobile device manufacturers.

Most websites work really well using this new beta and it's definitely the best mobile browser!

However, http://www.zurich-airport.com/ZRH/default.asp?ID_site=1&sp=en&hp=1&t=Zurich%20Airport is really really badly rendered and then if you click on "Arrivals" to see the live arrivals list it shows when the page is zoomed out but if you tap to zoom in on it, it disappears!

I have had similar problems with things disappearing when you tap to zoom in on them. Is this a site problem or an Opera bug?

In the news...

> Xperia X1 to come with Opera Mobile 9.5 < http://asia.cnet.com/crave/?t=opera+mobile+9.5

All real iPhone challengers now got Opera Mobile 9.5 pre-installed, HTC Touch Diamond, HTC Touch Pro, Samsung Omnia, SE Xperia.

Palm got another strategy, however:

< Did you consider Opera Mobile as a browser alternative? Yes, Palm looked at Opera Mobile, but the enterprise customer is looking for a simply standard solution and Internet Explorer Mobile is provided on all Windows Mobile devices.< http://blogs.zdnet.com/mobile-gadgeteer/?p=1379

Enterprice not looking for efficiency anymore ? Palm believes HTC, Samsung, and SE are wrong. I believe Palm is wrong. Certainly Palm Treo Pro is not for me.

As for Symbian...

> The Opera Symbian Team aims to provide the best internet experience to millions of Symbian OS users worldwide. We're leading the way in developing mobile browsing to customers like Sony Ericsson, Motorola, UIQ, Vodafone, T Mobile and other mobile handset manufacturers< http://www.opera.com/company/jobs/opening.dml?id=57

Opera is adding Symbian OS Programmers to the staff. If they can come up with an UI that can compete with touch, then they got a winner. It's about clicks, max 2 clicks to content of interest. Present non touch is not competitive. Want average 5 clicks ?

Qasim 24. August 2008, 14:30

Uggh... adding Symbian developers now :insane: ? That seems to hint that there still is quiet a bit of work left to do on the Symbian front. I was hoping that the Symbian developers they already had, were almost finished and were just finalizing stuff and getting ready to release the beta.

And if you're right, investor, and they still have to come up with a UI for Symbian, it'll be very likely that we'll have to wait a number of months before getting our hands on anything more tangible than hope and comforting promises. I really wonder what their Symbian team's been up to these past two years.

Comeon Opera, we really appreciated that you guys had started being open and communicative with us, even though us Symbian guys didn't get the beta release we'd been hoping and waiting for, for a very very long time.

The last thing we'd want is to go back to a couple of months of complete and utter silence, like we used to have, with cycles of broken expectations and disappointment, to people coming up with anticipated release dates they just made up themselves that got everyone's expectations up again, and then back to broken expectations and disappointment when those dates just went by and nothing ever happened.

If you guys think you don't have something newsworthy enough yet, something that'd warrant a blog post of it's own, how about just letting us in the loop by posting a comment every now and then, just telling us how the work's been going on the Symbian front. Maybe Opera's Symbian developers could participate in the discussion a bit, even some technical news and info would be appreciated. Some of the people here are pretty tech savvy. And maybe, if you could, just give us a relatively vague beta release date like the winmo guys got. Like say, should we expect a Symbian release by November or October, or even if it'd take you guys till early or mid '09. Knowing makes it easier, because then you know what to expect and don't have unrealistic expectations. That way, you won't have people hoping, expecting, and waiting for a release that they think they'd get any day now.

I think I'm being very objective and reasonable here. Just tell me if and where I'm wrong. I know and understand that Opera doesn't owe us anything and doesn't have to tell us a single thing. However, we don't have to be fans of Opera's products either, but we are. Respecting and appreciating that, and giving us some info like Opera did earlier, would be very nice, kind and polite on Opera's part. We'd really appreciate it.

Comeon Qasibr, the public holidays in Norway are barely over. Stop nagging.

Skyfire is spyware, BTW. That's their business model. Selling surfing habits and user data without anonymizing it first. Targeted ads and all. Read their privacy policy.

Qasim 2. September 2008, 01:32

Wasn't nagging. I just think there is a problem, and I want Opera to be aware of it so they can try to solve it.

Skyfire's system/functional model is very centralized, just like Mini's, and that causes a number of vulnerabilities. For one, if the center goes down or is inaccessible, the whole system falls appart. Opera Mini stopped working for me and alot of other people, for over a week. Their forums were filled with people trying to figure out what was wrong. To Opera's credit, they were very helpful and got the problem fixed, even though they didn't cause it. Some govt agency had blocked Mini's servers. Skyfire and Mini are vulnerable to this sort of stuff.

That's one reason why Opera Mobile is still very relevant and important. And there are alot of other reasons. I wanted to download a big file the other day, and using Mini, I couldn't do anything else while the file downloaded. So I exited Mini and used Mobile 8.65, which is two years old. And I had four tabs open while simultaneously downloading stuff.

There certainly is stuff Mini is good at, but Opera Mobile is in a completely different class when it comes to alot of stuff. That's why I really want to see the new version, and have been checking up on their forums for it since mid 2006.
