Opera Mobile

for Symbian and Windows Mobile

Release day - Windows Mobile, Symbian UIQ & Series60

, , , , ,

Today we're releasing many new things

- Opera Mobile for Windows Mobile v9.5 beta2 (w/widget support)
- Opera Mobile for Symbian UIQ v9.5 beta (w/widget support)
- An updated Opera Widgets SDK
- A developer version of Opera Widgets for Symbian Series60 (only available in the Widget SDK)
- An updated widgets.opera.com with several mobile-optimized widgets

The Windows Mobile and Symbian UIQ builds are available from the Opera Mobile download page.

This release focuses on x-platform and x-device widgets, and we're also kicking off an X-Widget challenge for those who eat JavaScript, CSS and HTML for breakfast.

The major new feature in Windows Mobile is the Widget Manager, but we have also added a Zoom slider and done some user interface and usability improvements in addition to many under-the-hood fixes in the browser core.

The Symbian UIQ browser is our latest and greatest UIQ build. It can only be installed on SonyEricsson P1, W960, G700 and G900.

Many of you have asked for a Symbian Series60 browser, and today we're releasing a Widget Manager which is one of our milestones towards a new full Series60 browser which will be based on the latest browser core. The S60 widget manager is a developer version packaged together with the Opera Widgets SDK.

As usual, please look at the list of Known Issues on the download page before reporting bugs in the Windows Mobile or UIQ forums.

Sorry, but I'm not seeing the Opera Mobile 9.5 beta2 on the download page. It still links to beta1.

There was a slight syncing problems in our servers, but the new builds should be available now

Lol, that Widget thing is a nice sneak peak for official S60 release. I can navigate to Operas site using it and man it is much fater than built in browser!

UIQ3 version - thanks! :-D

meh106 20. October 2008, 10:43

Usability issue: not possible to scroll around google maps without the viewport scrolling too. Would it be possible to implement some kind of way to temporarily supress scrolling of the viewport whilst dragging?

ares07 20. October 2008, 11:01

isn´t it the right time to creat an UIQ only section on Opera Mobile forums???

anyway, i created a thread for people to report bugs/issues/requests

http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=253975

and WELL DONE to opera, for a beta, this is very very good!!!

Heh, found a way to navigate to ACID3 test site using S60 widget manager and it scored 73/100. :) Loads pages freaking fast but it uses way too much memory (of course it is not meant to be used for that so that's not as surprise for me at all).

:wait: S60 :wait:

FataL 20. October 2008, 15:54

Will test it on my p1i today.

dmitrik 20. October 2008, 17:54

Sorry for silly question, but is the new UIQ3 version of Opera compatible with Sony Ericsson M600?

Anonymous 20. October 2008, 18:46

Hi dmitrik

According to the news, the UIQ version only sopported on the phones:

The Symbian UIQ browser is our latest and greatest UIQ build. It can only be installed on SonyEricsson P1, W960, G700 and G900.

So I doubt it will work.

GoJoeGo 20. October 2008, 20:07

Hey, all you Series 60 whiners, did you even bother to read the blog post or press release?

Blog post:

today we're releasing a Widget Manager which is one of our milestones towards a new full Series60 browser which will be based on the latest browser core

Press release:

we intend to release this browser for Series 60 phones in 2009

Got it?

This is not very precise date. Closer to January 2009 or December 2009?

trizzo 21. October 2008, 07:50

I am not happy that browser is not for SE M600i. I love this phone and I do not want to buy a new one just due to this limitation. On the other hand I would appreciate to use Opera Mobile 9.5 instead of older version.

jaran 21. October 2008, 12:26

writing this from my P1i. works great, a litle slow at times, but other than that its bloody awesome! my phone bill is gonna double several times now...

Yeah, where do I get the widget engine for S60?

Anonymous 21. October 2008, 21:41

Anarion writes:

It is in the latest Opera Widget SDK.

Anonymous 21. October 2008, 21:58

Anarion writes:

One tip: you can navigate out from that add widget site by cliking that Opera software ASA link at the bottom of that page. I actually posted this using Opera Widget manager on my Nokia N80, above post was posted using S60 browser. Both browsers render this page just fine.

Qasibr 22. October 2008, 04:38

The weird thing is, I keep getting this "update error" on my phone whenever I try to install the app on my phone.

Anonymous 22. October 2008, 05:33

Are you retarded? Did you even read the blog post and comments? Jesus Christ.

lockoom 22. October 2008, 07:20

I'd really like to know if there will be version for SE M600... :frown:

KarlHK 22. October 2008, 08:49

Sorry, but the M600, P990, and W950 don't have enough available RAM for this version of Opera. There are no plans ATM for a UIQ low-memory version.

mjunx 22. October 2008, 14:29

When is there going to be a smartphone version? I feel left out :frown:

I also get the "update error" when trying to install the Opera Widget Manager on a Nokia N95-3. I tried installing it on the flash card. I also tried installing it on the internal phone memory. Anyone got any ideas?

Hi Opera guys.THANKS for bringing the Opera to s60.I HOPE there will be good DOWNLOAD MANAGER with options to resume failed downloads etc.

Every opera bought for s60 will be a big defeat for Nokia webkit browser.

Qasibr 24. October 2008, 07:28

I'd really like to give the S60 widget manager a try, but I keep getting an "Update Error". Is there any way to get around this? I'm on a Nokia N80.

Anonymous 24. October 2008, 09:11

Anarion writes:

That's really weird. It works perfectly fine on my Nokia N80 RM-92 with V. 5.0719.0.2 firmware. I installed it in phones main memory.

ares07 24. October 2008, 09:24

cool..opera is considering releasing the widgets app for low memory UIQ3 phones

jbpseudo 24. October 2008, 09:45

If you get 'update error', it shows that you still have v8.65 on your phone. Remove it to install the widget manager.

@Anonymous,

UIQ is dead, so says Sony Ericsson... http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2008/10/23/uiq-is-dead-so-says-sony-ericsson/

Anyway, reviews suggest browsing on SE P1 is smoother than on SE Xperia, looks good on video too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dd847otVvP0&eurl=http://blogs.zdnet.com/mobile-gadgeteer/?p=892... and P1 is half the price of Xperia

Anonymous 25. October 2008, 20:29

Anonymous writes:

this person is right when it said that uiq is death but if its death for all uiq phones p1 is one of them so half the price and smoother i am not giong to buy a new phone with death software and still think that p990i have so much to offer to me so if i had a choice still goes to xperia and now i am seeing the review on samsung omnia as well it looks good but in this case i prefae sony because it have qwerty keyboard

Investor 26. October 2008, 05:29

True. Alot will happen next 2 years, now that all big players focus on internet access. Speed, processing power, memory, browser, OS, applications, etc. will improve, and phone price will go down with volumes going up.

So one alternative is to bridge next 2 years with the cheaper SE P1 or G900, rather than buying a sluggish Xperia now, then the perfect one in 2 years time.

I'm waiting for the HTC Touch HD myself, the best shot. And will read reviews carefully before buying. For that money that smartphone must be capable of replacing my PC, so it better be good. If not, then maybe a P1

Smartphones Are Moving Closer To Replacing PCs... If Mae West were alive today, the blond bombshell might be asking her dates, "Is that a PC in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me?" http://www.cio-today.com/news/Smartphones-Close-To-Replacing-PCs/story.xhtml?story_id=1200091LFQLC

Hello,
since 9.5b2 is obviously not available for Windows Mobile 2003, I am stuck with 8.65. Just tried to file a bug report for it but that failed with a PHP error... ;-( So just 4 your info:

When clicking on a tel: link which has title and accesskey parameters, these parameters are added to the phone number. Example:
Test

Would love to see that fixed in 9.5x, and of course a 9.5x version for Windows Mobile 2003 also...

Cheers
Herwig

HerwigF 11. November 2008, 07:47

A bit off-topic, but anyway:

I am having trouble opening an HTML file on a Windows Mobile 2003 PDA from a network share via WLAN. For instance, the following link is imported from IE (and is working there):
file://\\server\c\test.htm

When trying to open it in Opera Mobile 8.65, it is transformed to:
file://localhost/////server/c/test.htm
but does not work at all. I have already tried entering a few variants of the UNC path manually, but it did not work out.

Any suggestions how to open an .htm file from a UNC path in Opera Mobile 8.65?

Cheers, Herwig
