Opera Mobile

Opera Mobile 9.7 beta available for download

,

Opera Mobile 9.7 beta is now available for download. We first showed Opera Mobile 9.7 at CTIA in late march, but we needed some time to stabilize and test the new Opera Presto 2.2 core version.

The big news in this release is Opera Turbo. Opera Turbo is a server-side compression technology that compresses data up to 80% before it is sent to the mobile phone. Opera Turbo speeds up your browsing experience significantly when you are on a low bandwidth network (like EDGE). You will however not notice such a big effect when you're connected through WiFi or a high-speed mobile network. You can turn on Opera Turbo in the advanced section in the browser settings. Opera Turbo for Opera Mobile is still a preview feature, and we appreciate all feedback.

Download the browser here.

Happy browsing!

Why didn't we release a final version of 9.5 before skipping to 9.7?Opera Mobile 10 beta for S60 phones

yay!
I hope there won't be problem with insufficien memory on htc hermes in this version

michalr79 8. June 2009, 07:38

What about version for Symbian S60v5? Will You release Opera Mobile 9.7 Beta for this OS anytime soon?

mrkukov 8. June 2009, 07:41

It's already in beta and no S60 support.

mjsmart 8. June 2009, 07:49

About time! Downloading right now! Thanks guys

ap3rus 8. June 2009, 07:52

well, opera's developers probably a very "qualified" developers, they are planning to release S60 9.x version for more than a year and nothing yet shown, only words, words, words )

mjsmart 8. June 2009, 07:58

Running nicely on my Touch Dual. But, the IME support doesn't appear to be happening - my main gripe with Opera Mobile has always been I can't use my hardware keyboard, despite _all_ of the inferior browsers I've used working without a problem. I don't get it.
Still, nice product, long time coming.

Snapshot 8. June 2009, 08:02

What about uiq3 version?

Qasibr 8. June 2009, 09:25

I hate Opera so friggin' much rightnow. Their last S60 version was released in 2006 and after three years, still nothing. rip

michalr79 8. June 2009, 10:12

Our only hope is the Fennec (mobile Firefox). Symbian OS has the biggest market share of all smartphone operating system's. Ignoring it is just stupid. Probably Opera has a reason, but it would be nice to inform users about it. But insted they do what... they inform that Opera Mobile for Symbian is awesome and they can't wait to give it to us. Shame on them!

Turbid 8. June 2009, 10:21

when for symbian?monkey

docsteve 8. June 2009, 11:47

I can't install it on my Windows Mobile 5 or on SD card. any advice? 9.5 Beta was fine.

prking 8. June 2009, 11:52

Still no series 60 version! Very disappointed.

torgeirl 8. June 2009, 11:59

The blog post on 1st April promised Opera Mobile for S60 was on its way, since that two months has pasted without a word.

Are you committed to support Opera Mobile on S60v3 and S60v5?

Garion 8. June 2009, 12:35

Ok - issues:
The audio clip embedded in my blog no longer plays (it did in 9.5)
The slideshow of my photos no longer works.
Using Turbo basically turns 9.7 into a web VIEWER that's less capable than Opera Mini.
As mentioned above - STILL no keypad support for Touch Dual, how come, when it functions perfectly in Mini?
Still, at least the seach box on the start page scrolls on text entry in this version..

If you want to transfer your bookmarks and logins from 9.5 to 9.7 do the following: BOOKMARKS - go to 'my device/Application data/Opera 9.5 beta' and copy the 'opera6.adr' file, then paste it into 'program files/Opera Mobile/profile' it'll ask if you want to overwrite the current file, hit 'yes'. LOGINS - firstly, using 9.7 login to a site you DO remember your login and pass for and login. Exit 9.7 and go to: my device/Application data/Opera 9.5 beta/secure' and copy the 'wand.dat' then paste into: 'program files/Opera Mobile/profile/secure'. Note that despite Opera claiming that this version runs ok from storage I had several crashes until I installed to device.

I love Opera, but this release certainly has some issues which need ironing out - gosh, typing on this tiny keyboard is SUCH a nightmare, please address keypad support as soon as possible guys - it's back to Netty for me until that's sorted..

War10ck 8. June 2009, 12:54

Very disappointing. Turbo mode fucks up most pages and even without some pages look strange that worked well in 9.5. The rendering quality looks horrible in general, fonts are hard to read without zooming in on my X1. That was a million times better before(or in Netfront). It looks better than skyfire but it's still ugly! I'll keep waiting for progress and use Netfront meanwhile.

(can't find zoom slider, volume buttons don't zoom either, where is it?)

bhsand 8. June 2009, 13:02

Although it's a beta release, I was very disappointed when 9.7 turned out to be impossible to use for me. On my HTC Touch HD, it sometimes crashes after a few seconds, and sometimes (at best) after a couple of minutes. Sometimes it crashes completely, and it's at least possible to restart it from the start menu, but sometimes it seems to crash....but not quit. It disappears from the task manager, so I can't kill the process, and I can't restart it from the start menu, and I have to soft reset. So it's impossible for me to use.

I reckoned it wouldn't be perfect, but I didn't expect it to be THIS bad. Is there any tips for improving stability?

Garion 8. June 2009, 13:05

Addendum: still crashing like a smashed hippy at Glastonbury on an HTC Touch Dual with 61mb free RAM. I never know when it's going to close and return to the device Homescreen. Also noticed that the password manager doesn't work with Turbo enabled, does anything?

In a word: disappointing.. it's gonna get deleted shortly.

mortenlu 8. June 2009, 13:10

Works amazingly for me on my X1.
vg.no loads in 8 sec, vs 85 (!!) sec in 9.5 (skyfire does 13 sek, but that browser is totally useless anyway).
db.no loads in 7 sek, vs 49 in 9.5 (and skyfire 9 sek)

edit: I remember being able to read all text when zoomed out all the way (think it was the preinstalled 8.65 before I flashed to a new rom). Now I cant seem to get that perfect for 9.5 nor 9.7.

All sites I've tried look just great. And its just crazy fast.

Garion 8. June 2009, 14:05

Crazy being the operative word - sure, you can SEE the sites, but you can't do anything with them - no download or upload or indeed ANYTHING except look at them, and Mini can do that (and a whole lot more).

And whilst I'm here - how come it doesn't use the cache? (check it out - the cache folder is always completely empty) - is this why it crashes so often?

I can upload / download just fine and do more then just look at web sites, (Do you have Turbo mode off).. if you have it on it's a known issue..

as far as it not using the cache it works for me, again is turbo mode off?

Garion 8. June 2009, 14:41

Yeah I know you can up and download with Turbo off, but the previous poster was talking about its speed with Turbo enabled, if disabled it's the same as 9.5 so where's the advatage of having this version?

I never get any cache regardless of whether Turbo is enabled or not.

I'm not doubting you, just wondering what's going on - but are you saying that if you go to: 'program files/Opera mobile/profile/cache' that there are entries in there?

dllngr 8. June 2009, 15:31

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=523661

Many WM6.5Beta users having a QVGA device can't start it at all...

pdx77 8. June 2009, 15:47

For me the advantage with turbo mode off is that the screen rendering is much faster and scrolling is also quite a bit faster. (over 9.5)

And I do have entries in my cache directory, did you install it to the storage device or to the main device?

Garion 8. June 2009, 16:24

Thanks for your response @pdx77. I had it installed to storage card originally but then deleted and installed to device. Note the past tense, it's now been deleted permanently.

Perhaps (contrary to the pre-release info) it DOES conflict with earlier versions (I have 8.65 and 9.5 on my device) whatever.. I'm tired and stressed from testing and I give up

Sreeramu 8. June 2009, 23:41

series 60 version ....?

Garion 9. June 2009, 00:06

Ok, it's late and I'm tired, but I had to come and make a retraction...
It appears that there were elemens left of my original storage card install which may have been causing conflicts. Since their removal it's been running just fine, and since I've discovered it'll do flash I'm a very happy garion, so thumbs up  to the Opera guys

Qasibr 9. June 2009, 01:55

Oh crap with win mo users giving such long lists of complaints, Opera will keep focusing on fixing bugs and releasing newer betas for that platform, at the expense of S60 users. It's a beta you guys! It's supposed to be unstable and have problems. It's point is to give you an idea about what features you'll get in the final product.

Maybe S60 users should whine about all the problems and bugs we've got with the latest version of Opera Mobile available for our platform, because it hasn't been updated since 2006. Maybe that'd get Opera's attention.

doloop 9. June 2009, 08:27

I think that the only problem with S60 build is that it's a closed system owned by nokia. So you can't publish things on this platform without some sort of agreement beeing made.

I think nokia is not very confortable with the idea that opera mobile beat there own browser to death...

Think of it when you buy symbian os, don't blame opera for S60 not being open.

Garion 9. June 2009, 11:30

@Qasibr - Opera asked us for feedback on the beta; we've been giving it.

I said a while ago that Opera virtually defines your device, so if you REALLY want it badly, do as I did and make the leap to the Dark Side..

As I said in my post in the early hours, I'm really loving this build now I've sorted the (self-inflicted) problems, happy garion.

I don't believe S60 is so restricted, and as Symbian^2 is coming up Opera really needs to give the Symbian platform some love.

After we announced last week that the first beta [of Opera Mobile 9.5] was expected on July 15th [2008], many of you asked if we would offer a Symbian version. We will offer a Symbian version of Opera Mobile, but you will have to wait a while. We do not yet know when the Symbian version will be ready because development and quality assurance on mobile devices is time consuming.

This "promise" was made 7th July 2008 (that's 11 months ago!) under the title 'Leave no platform behind', and it is now nearly three years since that last Symbian S60 release (Opera Mobile 8.65).

There is appx. 57 different S60v3 handsets (45 Nokias, 9 Samsungs and 3 LGs are those I know about) previous, currently or soon available on the European and American marked, many of which are among Nokia's bestsellers. I can't see what so hilarious about wanting Opera to release a new browser for S60 when the last release is from 2006, and custumers will continue to use their S60v3 devices for many years.

perrisiam 9. June 2009, 19:39

very surprising, I ran out of memory with this version even though I installed to an 8 gig data card

otherwise this is running very niceley on my sprint mogul, scrolling isn't as smooth but that could be because this installed on the data card and 9.5 installed to main memory

I was hoping finger touch would be included in this build but I see that didn't happen

flitz 9. June 2009, 21:37

I liked the beta and i´m already using it as my primary browser in my Diamond. Anyway... what I wanna know is why you left Opera Link out again! Its been one and a half year since I can sync my bookmarks in my old Samsung phone trough Opera Mini but you still don't enable this feature in Opera Mobile. Theres a descent reason?

RogerDaryl 10. June 2009, 09:32

It's running fine on my HTC Touch Cruise.

one small gripe is at google. In 9.5b I could atleast access the basic site, but with 9.7b I'm stuck with their crappy mobile site. Will the final version include the ability to change the Agent string to tell sites your not on a pda?

War10ck 10. June 2009, 11:32

This version shows mobile Versions of pages although I have disabled that in the settings.
Software Keyboard pops up all the time although this doesn't make any sense at all on an X1 with hardware keyboard in landscape mode.
Flash works somehow but youtube videos lag extremely(It could work well, it does with Mach5 Browser)
Opera claims to be out of memory though I don't even have multiple tabs open and the X1 got more RAM than most other devices.
I read somewhere 9.7 would use the X1's 3D-accelerator to speed up scrolling... well feels the same like 9.5.
The only "progress" I could find is that I can finally click on links without zooming in first (wow, amazing feature :-/ )

Garion 10. June 2009, 12:51

Ok, for people having problems with being offered the mobile version of sites, do the following: type opera:config in the address bar of Opera 9.7 (remove the default 'http' so that it ONLY reads opera:config) and hit go, this opens the Opera Preferences editor. Scroll down to user agent and change the value below 'spoof user agent' from '1' to '2', save and exit the browser. Now when you browse you'll get the desktop version of sites by default instead provided you've got desktop mode enabled from your display settings - if you've got 'mobile view' checked you'll still get the mobile version of the site offered.

Garion 10. June 2009, 13:32

For those people who don't enjoy constantly having to tap and zoom out wap pages or web pages in mobile view: open the Preferences editor as described above and click on Adaptive zoom and change the 'virtual screen width' from '960' to the width of your device screen (for QVGA 240 portrait 320 landscape, for VGA 480 portrait 640 landscape). Save and exit the browser. Now content from wapsites or the mobile view of websites will fill your screen, but NOTE: you'll no longer get an 'overview' of websites, double tapping won't do anything, you'll just get the zoomed-out view - I actually prefer this, but if you find that you don't, and you prefer having the overview, simply reset to defaults in the Preferences editor.

RogerDaryl 10. June 2009, 18:38

Thanks Garion. That worked a treat.

Garion 10. June 2009, 18:57

wnpixel 10. June 2009, 19:19

Text still wraps in overview mode. This is terrible for everyone, especially for us with higher resolution screens.

Its basically useless in overview mode, as the text is barely readable. You HAVE to zoom in every time.

This sucks, big time.

Opera, fix it, pretty please?

Garion 11. June 2009, 13:20

Ok Opera, it's grovelling apology time - I only wish I'd paid attention to what you were saying; that's always been a problem of mine (pay attention at the back mr. garion)

I was grumbling about lack of hardware keyboard support on the Touch Dual and you'd already said "we recommend you upgrade to ezInput.." but did I listen? No.
Bad garion :frown:

Installed it now and the hardware keypad works perfectly, Opera has now been set as my default browser.

I've got a fast browser with smooth scrolling, flash and now keypad support and I'm made up  As a couple of days have passed since my negative comments above I can no longer delete them, but if any passing admin wishes to, feel free.

Thanks for a great browser.

NoPH8 11. June 2009, 16:54

Hello. First of all, I want to tell thanks for the greatest browser for PC, PPC and mobile-platform
Can you help me: how can I leave zoom slider on the screen at Opera Mobile 9.7Beta? I mean, I want to see him not only when I call it from the context menu, but allways. This will be more comfortable, as I think)
Also, at my Toshiba Portege G900 doesn't work portrait-mode of Opera Mobile vesions higher that 8.65 (8.65 was pre-installed on device, and works fine). Maybe it is due to GoForce5500 - I don't know, but it's a pity. Do you plan fix it on future version, or portege-community can not hope for it?))
Thanks for your attention.
P.S. Sorry for my bad English:)

Nice mobile browser, fast even on my Treo 750. But why can´t I use Opera Link?

ChrisRomp 13. June 2009, 03:15

The soft keyboard popping up all of the time is really annoying. I have a physical keyboard on my device (Samsung Saga i770). It would be better to see this as a configurable option.

jp1 13. June 2009, 07:05

Works well on my Samsung I900. Even without turbo, the experience is heaps better than 9.5. Smooth scrolling, zooming etc. Only frustration is when I open from favourites screen 9.5 takes over. Any ideas on how to fix this?
