Opera Mobile 10 Beta 2 for both Symbian/S60 and Windows Mobile
By Dag Olav Noremdagolav. Wednesday, December 2, 2009 7:06:10 AM
The main improvements from the previous betas are:
Both:
- Opera Link
- Download manager
- UI is more finger-friendly on touch devices
- Possible to manage search engines
- Opera remembers page position and zoom state when moving in history
- Column snapping also on touch
- Better memory management
- Fix for mobile view crash
- Start page available from touch menu
- Lots of minor bug fixes
- Clear cache setting
Windows Mobile (only):
- Asks whether to set Opera as default browser on install
- Fix for crash on startup (occurred on some devices due to encoding in bookmarks that were imported)
- Shortcut support
Known issues include:
S60:
- To view Asian languages Web pages you must download the "International version". This includes extra fonts which take approx 3Mb space after installation. See this blog post for more information.
- Only phones with Asian language packs will show Asian characters in the user interface (bookmarks etc)
- Known exceptions: Thai, Hindi (no support for Thai, Hindi glyphs in UI elements regardless of build used)
- Only partial IME (Input Method Editor) support
- Soft keyboard is shown even though hard keyboard is slid out and in use
- Canceling a connection request does not work (dialogue will pop up again indefinitely)
- Crash if you use system edit (platform input method) instead of default on facebook.com (probably also other sites)
- No plug-in support (e.g. Flash)
- You must click connect twice to use Opera Dragonfly
Windows Mobile:
- Non-Touch devices are not supported (Smartphone profile)
- No plug-in support (e.g. Flash)
- Some input method editors “IME” (hard and soft phone keyboards) are known not to work well with Opera because they do not comply with Microsoft's SIP and/or IME standard. When such an editor is detected by Opera, Opera will use a known (default) input method instead. An exception is EzInput v1.5, where the phone keypad and compact QWERTY, ABC mode doesn't work, but the rest of the modes work fine. We recommend upgrading to EzInput v2.0 to avoid this.
- Many IME's (Input Method Editor) will override the Opera shortcuts
- Certain HTC devices with TouchFLO will force Opera back to portrait mode if visiting home screen when Opera is in landscape.
- On older WM 5.0 Devices with 480x800 resolution, switching between portrait and landscape may cause display errors. This is due to lack of support for this resolution in early versions of Microsoft's driver.
- You must click connect twice to use Opera Dragonfly

Still has the Nokia E90 keyboard support issues (and a lot of them).
Oh yeah and still a feature i'd like to see - more speed dials. I have space on my E90 for 3x5 layout. Why not use it.
E: Hmm.. it seems it only synced about 2% of my home bookmarks, what's with that?
E2: There should be a possibility to save the used gateway in settings so i wouldn't need to choose it every time i start opera.

1. I can only synchronise some bookmarks.
2. There is no folder and notes synchronised.
3. Or did I miss something?...
Cheers!
*** Great job Opera team. You made my life more meaningful... :-)

How does the download manager look and work? Is it better than the one for desktop?

Oh, and as many people state, bring back small snapping while vertical scrolling... It's odd that when you scroll with your finger, the page keeps bouncing left and right. Odd after getting used to 9.5-9.7 anyways.

Animated gifs don't work (this is based on the previous version of the beta. Don't know about the current version.) They work on iPhone Safari though ;-) (iPhone safari doesn't do popup navigations though.)

having used Opera on wm6 since 9.5, I'd like To second #comment12224191's suggestions about adaptive zoom and pinch zoom (is it patented?)
also, I'd like to stress out how opera makes mobile browsing much more accessible and, dare I say, a pleasant experience. it has improved in an impressive way, one shall give you credit for that.
on a further personal plan, my nitpicks are the lack of feedback in fullscreen when clicking on a url (I suggest adding a small titlebar animation) and sometimes slowness when zooming in or out of an area (blank screen syndrom)
keep up the great work!

But. Why doesn't work multitouch on HTC HD2? It work in Opera 9.7, but not in 10, exist any way how turn it on?

i would like to see my bookmarks fully syncronized, the ability to browse my bookmarks up and down using 2 and b. it would also be great if opera remembers which acces point i use and an option to change it if i want to instead of asking me everytime i open the browser. also, i browse lots of mobile sites which dont render great here, i have to zoom in and its a pain, so i would appreciate n option where if i bookmark a site I can choose that particular bookmark to load in ssr/mobile view.
and last, would rock if there was a way to make OM10 default via associating the http:// protocol or something, even if that something is hacking. i would like to know. and last, sessions. if my browser or phone crashes i would like to be asked if i want to reopen my previous tabs.
In using a Nokia E63

didn't use it much yet, but it occured at varying points while entering/modifying the link settings(through normal and opera:config settings)
eventually i managed to configure link, but got the following error:
Save transaction failed - 500 -
Could not validate internal
storageformat
it could be caused by the install location(internal storage instead of device)
i'll try installing on the device itself to see if it works.
EDIT: seems link only works if you don't have an old profile from a previous version.
and even then, not all data is synched(for me only speeddial is synched, while bookmark synching is more important to me)

- Installing Opera Mobile on phone memory so I don't get the '500' error.
- Clean all the bookmarks and maps from Opera Mobile.
- Disable and then enable the opera link so it can syncronize.
- Make some maps on Opera Mobile (because you cant create maps in Opera Mini section by Opera Webrowser on Windows).
- Disable and then enable the opera link (again) so it can syncronize the created maps on Opera Webbrowser Windows.
- On Opera Webrowser Windows, I went to Bookmarks manager and moved the links I want to the maps that were created in Opera Mini section in the bookmarks. (When I copy the maps, and then paste on opera mini section, all the maps and bookmarks paste on the main place)
- Disable and then enable the opera link (again) so it can syncronize the bookmarks on Opera Mobile.
- Links are syncronized.
But when I go to Opera Webbrowser Windows, I see that the maps are dissapeard and all the links are placed in the main Opera Mini section.
There has to be a way to make this easier. Syncronizing bookmarks on internet explorer to pda is so easy, its just copy and past the maps with bookmarks and syncronize. Is there a way to do that also on Opera?
Secrius VivatSecrius # Sunday, December 20, 2009 6:45:33 PM
It syncronize bookmarks only in "Opera Mini" folder (at bookmarks at my PC). On phone "Opera Mini" - is root of my bookmarks.
Phone: HTC Touch Diamond 2. WM6.5. Opera Mobile 10 Beta 2, installed on Memory Card (SD flash).
PC1: Win7 x32, Opera 10.10;
PC2: Win7 x32, Opera 10.10;
PC3: Linux kubuntu x64, Opera 10.10.
PS: between PC's syncronizaation work properly...

No landscape mode when rotating and pinch to zoom/multi touch would be great. Like OM 9.7 does support that.
