Opera Mobile 10 Beta 3 for both Symbian/S60 and Windows Mobile

Today Opera Mobile 10 moves one step closer towards final with the release of Opera Mobile 10 Beta 3 for both Symbian/S60 and Windows Mobile. Beta 3 includes a few new features, and a lot of bug fixing and stabilization. Read more on www.opera.com/mobile. Or download it now at www.opera.com/mobile/download/ from a PC or "m.opera.com" from a mobile phone.

New improvements include:

Windows Mobile Keypad Support:
Opera Mobile 10 Beta 3 now supports keypad devices running Windows Mobile 6 standard, and Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone devices.

Experimental Flashlite 3.1 (Windows Mobile):
This beta also brings experimental Flash support to Windows Mobile (touch devices only). However, Flash performance and usability depends greatly on how powerful your device is. On the 1Ghz HTC Touch HD2 the overall experience is quite good. On anything slower it varies from mediocre to poor.

For this reason we have disabled flash by default in the Opera Mobile settings. To enable flash goto Tools -> Settings -> Advanced and set plug-ins to "On".

Note that Opera Mobile has Click-to-play functionality for plug-ins. So even when plug-ins are enabled you activate individual Flash content by clicking on it. This to minimize the use of bandwith and CPU on content you may not be interested in.

We also wanted to take the chance to thank the Opera Mobile community for all of the great feedback and bug reporting on the Beta 1 & Beta 2 releases. The feedback has been truly helpful and has made a direct impact for us reaching Beta 3 status. We look forward to your feedback on today's beta.

The main improvements from the previous betas are:

S60:
- Complete bookmark sync in Opera Link
- Support for non-latin characters in the UI also when phone is set to latin locale (requires international build)
- A lot of input and keyboard related fixes
- Fixed text selection
- Visual indication of input mode also for non-latin input modes
- General bug fixing (stability, UI)

Windows Mobile
- keypad/smartphone support
- Flash Lite 3.1 support (disabled by default)
- Complete bookmark sync in Opera Link
- BIDI support also for language extensions
- phone numbers in plain text are converted to links
- support for background sound
- general bug fixing (stability, UI)

Known issues include:

Both:
- Opera Link: Bookmarks saved in Beta 2 are lost when upgrading to Beta 3
- Hotmail does not work, please use the mobile version "www.hotmail.com/m"
- Dragonfly - need to do 'connect' two times in a row to get a connection working

S60:
- After permanently accepting an untrusted certificate, you get an error when trying to load the https:// page again. Workaround: In the S60 device menu go to the Settings -> General -> Security -> Certificate Management -> Trusted site certificates and delete the certificate for the problematic site
- No zoom out button after using find in page with small qwerty keyboard

Windows Mobile:
- Flash is only a preview/in alpha state, expect instabilities, performance degradation during use
- Flash is only supported on touch devices
- Need to double-click on Flash content to view it in full-screen, another double-click to return
- right-to-left support is not complete in the UI
- On certain WM5 Smartphone/WM6 Standard devices, the dictionary is not disabled in the password field
- Unable to type special characters on Moto Q9
- Certain HTC devices with TouchFLO will force Opera back to portrait mode if visiting home screen when Opera is in landscape
- Some input method editors are known not to work well with Opera because they do not comply with Microsoft's SIP and/or IME standard. When such an editor is detected by Opera, Opera will use a known (default) input method instead. An exception is EzInput v1.5, where the phone keypad and compact QWERTY, ABC mode doesn't work, but the rest of the modes work fine. We recommend upgrading to EzInput v2.0 to avoid this.

Sweet! Thanks for the next version. Hopefully the flash won't affect its stability too much. I'm assuming that stability was the main priority for beta 3.

you have to use 'opera link' - otherwise just copy & paste them to your blog page....

unless *someone* knows where they are stored????

Thanks 4 opera mobile beta3.it have some major problem.
1)it take huge amount of RAM.
2)No Feeds)
3)Main scene tollbar look like a monster
4)it is not properly smooth
Hopefully this problem must be solve in the next bata.

Tomas Prochazkatprochazka Saturday, February 13, 2010 4:56:54 PM

I'm mising only multitouch or any other way to zoom page.

Flash support is great, but it is not possible zoom to whole flash.

Also Opera Link doesn't work. I have several thousand bookmarks. And Opera Mobile freeze during synchronizing. I taky several hours and I still doesn't see nothing in bookmarks.

MatthewMLyons10 Sunday, February 14, 2010 2:22:12 AM

Bookmarks are lost? What is with that? I think I'll pass, that's absurd.

this version is unusable on nokia e90. Cant type in to the address bar in any way. Neither the keypad nor the qwerty seem to be working there.

illiad Sunday, February 14, 2010 10:46:43 AM

well I dunno WHY then have not used the warning message that they always use on the desktop beta blog...

WARNING: This is a development snapshot: it contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

That *should* be in LARGE RED letters, but it seem this blog will not do that... irked

Had almost given up on a om 10 version for smartphone! Well going to download it now!

Anbananban Sunday, February 14, 2010 12:07:06 PM

Well I went to the download page and there it says om 10 beta 3 does not support no touchscreen devices running windows mobile 6 standard or windows mobile 5 for smartphones but it gives you an option to choose between a touch phone and keypad phone to download? btw has any one tried om beta 3 on a moto Q9h or non touchscreen smartphone?

Caroloperainchicago Sunday, February 14, 2010 6:00:10 PM

After testing Opera Mobile 10 beta 3 on my Nokia N95 8gb, I did find some issues: parsing failed on attempt to use opera link. However on Opera Mobile 5 beta 2 I have all my bookmarks and opera link works. In OM 5 when clicking download manager, it shows that I downloaded Opera Mobile 10 beta 3 for symbian. Weird lol

Ide StoutjesdijkCrimi Monday, February 15, 2010 12:09:30 AM

Works so good on my N97 mini bigsmile

Al Garciaalgarcia Monday, February 15, 2010 4:02:35 AM

This beta 3 is cool but lags for some reason. When inputing text there's like a 2sec delay and I dislike it. I'd rather use inline text editing but it seems its been disabled on this version. I also had to download it to my computer since the download link did not show via m.opera.com on my mobile browser. I'm using a Nokia E63.

I also got the parsing error on Opera Link but managed to get it working after a couple of tries. The overall experience is not as smooth as it was on previous beta I must admit.

This problem was also in previous version.
I have got E63-1 RM 437 200.21.012

mohamed magdy omarheroyuy Monday, February 15, 2010 2:39:12 PM

i tried opera flash but it didn't work Although i turned the plug-in on .

perrisiare Monday, February 15, 2010 10:42:00 PM

flash isn't working on my sprint mogul, I did go in and enable plugins (it was already enabled, it was not set to off by default)

I get a "corrupt file" or "not supported" message

this is strange to me since kinomo player has no problem playing youtubes, nor did iris when it was available

still a great browser but I was counting on the flash when you posted it would work somewhat

perrisiare Monday, February 15, 2010 10:43:19 PM

also the older version could see my ie favorites and this version cannot...that's tough, I have to type in all my addresses till I get them in there

QasimQasibr Tuesday, February 16, 2010 4:29:18 AM

After people begging on this blog and the Opera Mobile forums for three years to find out what the status of the next version was, it's such a huge and welcome relief to see the Mobile team push out three betas in the past few months.

The new versions are great, but they still give out of memory errors on mid-sized websites, and the browser runtime itself eats alot of RAM when you load it, even without loading anything. This is still a beta so we can't really complain about this stuff.

My concern is that Opera might decide that since this isn't an issue for the latest and greatest devices, they'll decide not to optimize the runtime too heavily, or not do something, like degrade and scale mem usage by disabling mem hogging things like all those snazzy animations on devices that can't afford them. That would be great because the browser could be very popular not only on older devices, but mid-tier S60 modern mass-market ones that a much wider userbase uses, but don't come with an impressive browser like Opera's. S60 is going to be Nokia's mid-tier platform, so making the browser super-efficient would help in the coming months and years.

The previous versions of Opera Mobile for S60(8.65) use enormously less RAM compared to the latest betas, when you compare the base/runtime footprint, and while loading the same websites. However, I know Opera's got tremendous engineering talent and I'm hoping that when they release the final product, it's resource consumption would be comparable to their previous version.

perrisiare Tuesday, February 16, 2010 12:36:25 PM

for qasim;

with more features you MUST use more ram however technology follows hardware and hardware follows technology

most phones produced today have no memory problem with this version of opera and if they didn't use the current level of hardware technology they would be leaving far too much on the table

It does not now, I assume it will soon since Opera Desktop does in it's pre-release.
