Opera Mobile

Why didn't we release a final version of 9.5 before skipping to 9.7?

, , ,

Our core department has released a new version of Opera Presto which contained support for Opera Turbo, more advanced web standards, Gears and several other improvements. We wanted to make this available to our users as soon as possible, and chose to upgrade the core version in Opera Mobile. Updating the browser core is a big step forward for us, and it felt natural to change the version number.

We have to upgrade to a new browser core as often as possible. Several products using a wide range of browser core versions introduces a lot of overhead (several version of core has to be maintained and worked on at the same time), so we try to use the most current stable core version at all times.

With regards to Symbian S60, I can only tell you that we're working on it.. but I'll also add that it's really awesome, and we can't wait to let you guys play with it cool

Thanks for clarifying the position. Great to know, at last, that we aren't being ignored. Lets keep our fingers crossed that its sooner rather than later.

Nice to know that S60 version is under-development!

Duncan: I cannot comment on which platforms we will port our browser to, as this is sensitive for our customers and the stock market.
I can however say that we always try to be available on as many platforms as possible..

tomassplatch Wednesday, April 1, 2009 2:57:30 PM

yes, that's really great news about s60... I hope there will be a non-touch-screen version and not only s60 5th "touch" symbian version. this obviously takes lot of work I suppose, as Opera's UI has to be reinvented for non touch screens...

I hope you can get the canvas performance up to par with actual phone specs.

Running on Nokia N95, which is perfectly capable of running games with 3D graphics and other niceties, Opera Mobile 9.5 chokes totally when you render 20 lines in canvas.

Yes. 20 *lines* chokes it down to such crap framerates it's basically unusable.

Anonymous Wednesday, April 8, 2009 9:14:51 AM

Anonymous writes: Nokia N95 with Opera Mobile 9.5? 9.5 for S60? LOL. BTW, 3D graphics that are accelerated are completely different from non-accelerated graphics.

Janizomg Wednesday, April 8, 2009 3:39:09 PM

What's so "LOL" about that?

I don't think the menus etc. in the N95 are accelerated. Or any rendering for that matter. The canvas performance just literally sucks no matter how you look at it.

prking Wednesday, April 8, 2009 4:43:16 PM

Zomg, I think he went LOL because Mobile 9.5 was never available for the N95. So what are you describing? The widgets manager?

Janizomg Wednesday, April 8, 2009 7:30:40 PM

Ya Opera Widget Runtime... which is as far as I know basically Opera Mobile 9.5 without the GUI for browsing pages.

gojoego you must not have had a smart phone for long to know what your saying.....i have opera mini 4.2 which is just excellent infact personally much more fun compared to opera mobile for s60 version 8.65 and ucweb combined but of the two sis platform browsers(ucweb 6.3 and opera 8.65) i prefer ucweb. Its much fun not boring as 8.65 and it loads way faster and has an amazing download speed when your getting files using it....the UI is just playful and fun too. Ucweb learnt alot from opera and is getting better opera should do the same specifically on the s60 platform....we feel left out.Opera do better on the s60 platform please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
