Updated Opera for the Wii

, , , ...

Today Nintendo released an upgrade for the Wii, frankly that alone doesn't get me too excited because I still don't own one (this means the next person that reads my blog should send me one). But, what does get me excited is that Opera has also done some overhauling of the "Internet Channel" to make the web browser much more in tune with it's desktop cousin, Opera 9.

I know that in many circles the first feature that people are speaking about is the send a link to a friend feature. I am much more excited about the addition of widgets to the Internet Channel. Since the introduction of Opera 9 many users have created some pretty incredible widgets that give you a whole host of functionality which can now all be brought to your Wii.

Now that brings me back around to the Send a link to a friend feature. Simply put, you can now send your Wii friends a link to whatever site you want and include a note so you can show off whatever it may be (I would send people links to You Tube videos all day long, but that's just me).

One thing that will make your whole internet browsing experience on the Wii so much more enjoyable is the fact that you can now plug in a wide myriad of USB keyboards and utilize it to type in addresses much faster. All of this is currently a free upgrade to any current owner of the Internet Channel and for those of you that don't own it yet then quit wasting your time and fork over the measly 500 Wii points they are asking for it.

The Game System Battle

All this excitement surrounding E3 and the 3 competing gaming systems got me thinking. I used to be a rather devout Sega follower. The problem was that although Sega was always on top of innovation they always seemed to release their system too early and then someone else came along with a system that was 1/2 step up the technological line. Right now it seems that Microsoft may have put themselves in the same position as Sega. Sure, the Xbox 360 is a great and powerful machine, but what about Wii and PS3? It looks as if so far the offerings from Nintendo and Sony will surely outdo Microsofts gaming lovechild.

As I was thinking about this I hopped on over to the Xbox 360 Site, the Nintendo Wii Site and found the most recent spec sheet for the PS3 at PS3land. The first thing I was trying to find was whether or not each one has a web browser, obviously we know that Wii has the best one, Opera. In a new video of PS3's interface on YouTube it appeared that the PS3 did indeed have a browser although it wasn't functional in the video yet. As far as I can see on the 360, there isn't one(correct me if I am wrong, I still have yet to play with one).

The next thing that I was curious about was wireless network connectivity. On the Xbox website I found out that if you pay more and get the souped up 360, they give you an ethernet cable($20 USD value at Best Buy) and if you want to go wireless you have to buy an additional adapter for $99 USD. On the other hand, both Wii and PS3 are supposed to have Wifi built in. Now if you are reading this now and you are using wifi, you know how incredibly convenient it is to not have to deal with wires, especially if you allready had a computer plugged in.

The one other thing I wanted to see was whether or not wireless controllers were standard for each of the systems. Once again I found that if ou went with the 360, you could pay more and have wireless(interesting trend). We all know that Wii has wireless controllers, and very interesting ones at that. The PS3 appears to have Bluetooth standard for the controllers.

Now the point of this isn't for me to bash the 360 but it's to show the similarities to Sega's trend in early release. This may not always be the smartest approach to releasing game systems. As you can see from E3, the excitement over the 360 has really died down and the excitement for the PS3 has gone up incredibly due to Sony's keep it quiet approach. Excitement for Wii has gone up because Nintendo intends to change the way that you game in general with all sorts of new innovations.

Pushing the limits of a Mobile near you.

After a long day of playing with dual nVidia video cards and finally figuring out the order of operations in instlaling them to get 4 displays on one computer, I decided to feature something on saw on nVidia's website. On the top of nVidia's website I couldnt help but constantly notice an add showing off their mobile technology. There are a whole host of mobile phones out there tha are packing quite a punch when it comes to mobile gaming. As most of us sit here and scoff at gaming on a mobile phone, the folks at nVidia are coming up with new technology to turn your head towards the small screen where they make 3D gaming come to life. I know normally focus on the end product but I figured that nVidia needed some due credit for advancing the most portable of portable gadgets. Here is a link to nVidia's pag showing off a whole host of devices that use nVidia GoForce Chips: Click Me

The Nintendo Wii tops my list...

And you might ask me why is this so? Because it was announced today that the Nintendo Wii will include an instantly loading Opera browser! How can it get any better than that? So basically you get a revolutionary controller, a web browser, and Nintendo's unique lineup of games. There seriously cannot be a better living room console than Wii. There are allready some discussions going on about this in the Nintendo DS Group, go join up and discuss. :D

GP2X bumps up the game!

For all of you people that don't remember the incredibly cool linux handheld gaming system from Gamepark Holdings then look back through my posts. But the firmware has just gone to 2.0 and now is the time for anyone that has been holding out to buy one of these sweet emulation loving machines. The firmware improves boot time(adds a nice startup chime as well), also adds a system menu, support for many things seems to have gotten better and I am told there is file sharing via Samba server as well. All in all it is a great way for Gamepark Holdings to push the GP2X forward. Keep in mind there are many many emulators out there for this device so you will never run out of games to play, but there are a handful of companies coming out with comercial games very soon. Now go pick one up.
