PDA? UMPC? What is it?

, , , ...

Whatever you wanna call it, it falls into the category that I really hold a place for in my heart. I am big fan of all things that are more portable than a laptop but larger than a pda. There really is a happy medium for a "truly portable" device, this device may have hit that happy medium on the head.

The Kohjinsha SA1F00 is one of the devices that is nice and small but it has the capabilities to do anything a regular computer can(ok maybe not play top of the line games, but you understand). What really makes this stand out above and beyond is the fact that A. it has a nice price range, $750 for one with 40gb of HD space or $930 for one with an 80gb HD and Office installed. and B. because it so portable yet it has all the same aspects as a standard laptop, wifi, bluetooth, up to 1gb of ram, 5 hours of battery life. This portable wonder packs a 533mhz AMD Geode processor, which may not sound like much but for a device like this it's more than plenty. Now only if I could ditch the OS for a flavor of linux it would be great in my book(it comes standard with Windows XP). I think though that I will have to stick with my favorite portable computer of choice, the Nokia 770, oh the touch screeny goodness.

One for the Dorm!

, , , ...

College kids take note: This next gadget is right up your alley as I understand just how tiny and cramped your dorm rooms can be. Oppo hs just introduced a pretty amazing LCD flat panel tv that incorporates some very nice industrial design work with a small footprint and a space saving built in dvd player. The LT-2007 has that clean sleek look that you have seen before in Apple's G4 iMac. The display itself is EDTV quality and sports a ntive 800x600 resolution but is capable of displaying up to 1080i HD signals. The real gem on this is the incorporated progressive scan dvd player that supports both Divx and xvid and is nice and compact and also has plenty of "ins and outs" to satisfy most needs in addition to a card reader and usb port. The fact that this LCD/DVD combo comes in at only $599 and has some great features that the college student can really appreciate at a size that is just right makes it a great buy in my book.

The rEvolutionary Switch Begins

, , , ...

We all new it was coming, most of us didn't expect to see anything like this so soon. PQI, manufacturer of all sorts of flash memory, has announced a line of flash based 2.5" SATA Hard Drives with capacities up to 64gb. I am sure the price won't be cheap quite yet but imagine the possibilites. This will make Notebooks much more rugged as they will no longer have moving parts(except the optical drive). It seems though that PQI has taken that leap that will change the portable industry for good. We will see what comes of all this and what new products are released with these drives in them as the evolutionary HD saga unfolds.

Samsung giving Sony a run for their money?

, , ,

Samsung is pulling out all the stops on it's revamped i300 mobile phone, the i300x. They have slapped a 4gb hd in the phone for more than enough storage space for all of your favorite tunes. This phone could be seen as a direct competitor for Sony's walkman line of mobile of phones. The i300x sports all the features you could ever want in a phone, lots of storage space, micro sd card slot, bluetooth, a decent camera at 1.3mp(why not 2mp?), and support for all major standard media formats for music and video. The 2 things I don't understand are, why not quad band instead of tri-band? and why in a world of absolutely incredible symbiam OS devices has Samsung chose to put Windows Mobile on this phone? I would go as far as calling this the perfect candy bar style phone if they used symbiam or a propietary OS and Quad Band. Still this phone is very attractive and is about as much as anyone could need in a phone.
