A few months back I decided to make a drastic change in my day to day computing by selling my trusty Clamshell iBook and replace it with a something that is much more portable in the true sense of the word. Having had a brush with the Nokia 770 and having been able to try it out I knew that I wouldn't be dissapointed by it, so I tracked one down and picked it up. Now this isn't a review of the 770 if that's what you are thinking. I will leave it at this, the 770 is great, it runs what is basically a full desktop version of linux with a vast and growing catalog of software available for it.
What I wanted to talk about today was a brand new piece of software that is putting a skip in the step of every Nokia 770 that this software grazes. Canola! No, not the oil that you use for cooking, but a brand new piece of multimedia software that has the 770 community a buzz. Canola is a media player that has a similar feeling to Apple's Front Row software with ease of use and simple but beautiful graphics. Canola will play any local media files from movies to audio to pictures but will also stream files located on your network or stream internet broadcasts and podcasts. I installed the newest version on my 770 and it appears that the program is still in Beta but from playing with it you would never know. The whole program is very polished and very easy to use. In order to set up the program the makers of Canola have provided an internal web server with a web page to set all your basic settings including changing the theme. The controls are very simple and very easy to use and each of the touch points are located on the edge of the screen so you can use your fingers instead of the stylus if you choose. All in all, this program gives yet another reason to pick up a 770 if you haven't yet and for those that have, I highly recommend installing this program.
The Sony Mylo looks like it will be a pretty incredible device and we will see it sooner rather than later(September to be exact). In my own personal opinion this device may have just bested the iPod. With Wifi(complete with Opera Browser of course), Mpeg4 playback, Audio playback, Qwerty keyboard, Streaming music, Skype, 320x240 Screen, 1gb of Flash Storage with a Memory Stick Duo Pro Slot, and an all around low price of $350 this is looking like it will be one extremely hot handheld device. It appears that Sony has taken a bit of the psp styling and incorporated it into this device as well as some completely original ques. Overall this a beautiful unit that I am extremely excited to see. Sony, I welcome you back to the media playing game.
There are certain brand names out there that strike me as intriguing for one reason or another. Some brands make odd devices that break the norm, some make revolutionary devices that blow peoples minds, other companies just make stuff that works and they do it with style. Nakamichi is one of those brands that falls into the latter category.
Nakamichi is known for making audio gear that is simplistic in industrial design but very functional in the fact that it generally has great sound. This time around Nakamichi is working to improve on the portable dvd player with their new device, the Lumos. Following along with recent UMPC tablet style, Nakamichi has decided to buck the clamshell trend of portable players and offer up a tablet player. With a 7" wide screen display(resolution up to 1440x234) and High Resolution audio that follows along with Nakamichi tradition, this player promises to be a quite the portable device. The Lumos also has an SD slot, mp3 cd/dvd support, digital audio out, carrying case, wrist strap and even a remote.
It seems that with the beautiful design, Nakamichi's reputation for quality, the extra accessories and the $500 price tag, the Lumos is definitely worthwhile. I have to say that I have never been a huge fan of portable dvd players but you can definitely sign me up for one of these. For further information head on over to Nakamichi's Website
After a long day of playing with dual nVidia video cards and finally figuring out the order of operations in instlaling them to get 4 displays on one computer, I decided to feature something on saw on nVidia's website. On the top of nVidia's website I couldnt help but constantly notice an add showing off their mobile technology. There are a whole host of mobile phones out there tha are packing quite a punch when it comes to mobile gaming. As most of us sit here and scoff at gaming on a mobile phone, the folks at nVidia are coming up with new technology to turn your head towards the small screen where they make 3D gaming come to life. I know normally focus on the end product but I figured that nVidia needed some due credit for advancing the most portable of portable gadgets. I know I haven't done an entry about this phone on this page yet but I have had a close eye on this one for a long time. The Qube is a complete step away from the standard cell phone in that the form factor is that of a square. The Qube came out last year, obviously not available to the limited US mobile market. But Asia and parts of Europe have been fortunate enough to have this phone graze the shores of their home. So whats the big deal you ask? Well the Qube is another one of those fully functional phones that I keep talking about. The Qube does everything from play music, to videos, to games, shoots 1.3mp still photos, it's just a great all around phone with a very nice set of features. I actually pondered purchasing this phone for myself before I bought the one I have now. The only thing that held me back was the tri-band, it would be so much more if they had just made the phone quad band. Because of tri-band though, it makes this phone an incredible buy for those US mobile users that have t-mobile.
