I'll think of a good title later

More on Opera Panels

,

For those that have come in late I downloaded Moz 1.6 recently & have been playing around with it a little.

One thing I've had a good look at in Mozilla were the panels (they call them 'sidebars'). The default selection are pretty poor, the news panel laughably so in comparison to Opera's equivalent. However it does provide a link to a section of the Open Directory:

<http://dmoz.org/Netscape/Sidebar/>

I think this is unfortunately named as they all seem to work perfectly well in Opera as well. So for anyone looking for a few extra panels the categories & number of panels available in each at the Open Directory are:

Arts (15)
Business (11)
Computers (15)
Games (1)
Health (4)
Home (7)
News (13)
Recreation (5)
Reference (23)
Regional (6)
Science (2)
Shopping (7)
Society (4)
Sports (7)
World (61)

One category that seems lacking is 'Tools'. I know MarcFou was working on an excellent panel of bookmarklets a while ago.

I have spent the past day working on a couple of panels of my own. They are stored at my website, for faster loading of these panels right click each link & select 'save as' then load the panel from your local drive.

Tip: you can drag a link directly from a webpage to the hotlist/panel bar to make it a panel.

I'm quite proud of this, & not bad for a day's work. It is as simple or as complicated as you want it to be. Not finished yet by a long way, there are loads more functions I can add to it (especially conversions) let me know if it is worth developping further.

Calendar

Here's a simple one that shows the current, previous & next month's calendars & highlight today's date (no reminder functions or anything like that). It is very easily styled to your tastes if you know css:

When adding a new panel it would be nice to be able to specify a path to an image which Opera could use as an icon in the hotlist/panel bar.

& Finally...

Here are some more panel ideas that I haven't seen & don't really have the time or skill to implement effectively.

Opera journal admin - login & add/edit posts
Currency conversion
World timezones
Maps
Address/postcode lookup
Telephone directory

Start or Start?

Rijk posted a message in the forums asking us to come up with better ideas for a start panel for use in 7.5. While beginning a mock up page I got thinking about the panel selector as it appears on the start panel. It is a button labeled start. Windows has a button labeled start as well.

Think about a young chap using a computer for the first time. He wants to get on the internet. He has been given a copy of Opera by a caring soul who doesn't want the poor newbie to get off on an Internet Explorer related foot. They've loaded it up & want to know what to do next.

The newbie looks across the room to his friend (who is popping the bubbles on the bubblewrapping that came with the new PC) for inspiration & the friend replies, "press 'start'"

Which button? Instant confusion.

Opera 7.5 part 2

,

...just to be clear I do like 7.5. I was just being overly critical in my last entry.

Here are a few good things:

Firstly the panel buttons maintain a uniform size. This is important for me as I love everything to be neat & tidy. This is also a major usability increase because it is easier to know where a button starts & ends. Dyslexia sufferers will especially benefit from this improvement, uneven spaces between words make text difficult to read.

Seperating the buttons that call the panels & the panels themselves - another very good thing. Some people will want to control the 2 units individually - others will want to control them together - this is what needs to be worked out. Yay for betas!

Reload button, close button, maximise/minimise button & view menu for each panel - fantastic.

The chat client is great. If Opera can support the other chat networks without becoming any less clean & simple we have a winner. Or if the world can abandon the other networks in favour of IRC...

The new menu layout is probably good. I never had a problem with the old set up (pretty much everything I do can be done with a keyboard shortcut). As with any piece of software you just had to learn where things were.

The future is looking good.

Opera 7.5

First thought:

AAAAGGHH!!!! Stay calm - breathe deeply.

It is a bit different to say the least. It would appear that the 'Opera is too cluttered' complaints from the IE & Mozilla camp (simpletons p: ) have been taken on board with a vengeance.

On start up Opera is definitely much leaner & less cluttered. As an Opera user it seemed to me as if everything was missing although obviously this is not the case. The incompleteness of the startup shouldn't have bothered me as my first customisation of any new Opera is to remove all the buttons. I only use the Google & address fields. I perform all other functions through keyboard shortcuts & mouse gestures.

After getting my bearings I thought excellent - less components to remove.

The next problem - Opera seem to have done away with the hotlist. This is not a popular move at the moment, & not one that I'm sure I'll get used to. One of the best features about Opera for me was how you could have almost the entire screen dedicated to the webpage, then you could press F4 & easily access all the tools you need, then press F4 & it was all cleanly hidden again.

The panels button that you can apply (off by default - bad idea) works the same way as the hotlist button of old but unfortunately F4 does not. Pressing F4 will open the panle list & the top listed panel together (good) pressing F4 again closes the panel but not the panel list (bad). I consider this a serious usability flaw but I'm not sure if Opera consider this a feature.

The other problem I had with opening & closing the panels was the way it squashed the address bar. It just looks really messy & unprofessional. To overcome this I reinstated the mainbar (off by default) removed all its buttons, then switched all the fields & the panel button from the address bar to the main bar then turned off the address bar. Now opening a panel does not alter any of the toolbars giving a more consistent appearance.

The customise toolbars dialogue is nice but I prefer the dragging & dropping of previous 7s.

& what is with the start panel? A page that takes up the entire screen & only offers one new function (search mail). For 'Go to web address' people will (strangely) use the address field & to search the internet I think most people's instinct will be to use the field that says Google. An entire page for one new feature seems a little bit of an overkill for me.

So far I've spent most of my time changing Opera back to how it was.

I get the impression that this release is not for Opera users. It seems to be trying to be too much like other browsers. Part of Opera's appeal is that it is not like other browsers - this is something to be flaunted, not hidden.

The last thing Opera needs is its fans turning against Opera.

Despite all that though there are lots of backend improvements which make this release worth using.

As always more later...
