I'll think of a good title later

CSS: Completely Spartan Site

, , ,

Well, that took longer than expected. Tonight I have spent the evening tinkering away at my own custom stylesheet for this blog. It's been a long time since I've done any CSS hacking. You never know how much you don't know about something until you have to use it.

I was very confused about where all the 'tags' & 'Add images/files' boxes had gone had gone until I realised they shared the "nomarg" class which I had hidden in an attempt to get rid of that irritating edit title button.

As you may be able to see I have pretty much gutted everything out. What can I say? I like the minimalist approach. If anyone is interested my old calendar & sidebar which used to be on the right of the page are up for sale on ebay.

Tonight was also the first time in months that I have fired up FireFox & AAYYYEEEEEE!!! (er.. sorry IE) to check everything displays ok. Everything seems to be in order, but if you think something is missing it is probably because I've intentionally hidden it. If it was important let me know & I might un-hide it.

Hm, this looks clean. Not bad, muybe a bit boring in the long run :smile:

Only your 'About' page doesn't really fit in.

Wow, I like it. I've always thought the minimalist look is the best web design, and your blog just shows how nice it can be. Maybe I should steal your customcss. p:

I don't really think the styling of blogs need to be exciting, does anyone really care beyond whether the text is readable after visiting the blog half a dozen times?

& besides I have my phenomenal acerbic wit & dazzling writing style to wow the reader... or something. Noted on the about page though, I'll do something with that later.

Hi Dan, please steal away. I haven't really come up with anything special, I just edited Fred's original sheet removing everything I didn't want.

The CSS is here & the exciting dash of colour is here

If you or anyone else doesn't already know how to apply a custom stylesheet then simply go to your "Preferences" page then click the "Web page layout" link, then the "custom style sheet" link.

Copy & paste the entire CSS file into the text box, select "Only use my custom style sheet" from the radio buttons then click save.

You will also need to upload the bg image (or one of your own) into the "blog" directory.

To do this go to Preferences > My Files then click "Upload New" check the "Blog" radio button then enter the URL for the picture into the box beside the choose button.

Or click the choose button & select your own picture from your computer. If you do this though remember to change the filename in the CSS:

body {
background:#fff url(http://my.opera.com/<b>Your username</b>/homes/blog/<b>your filename</b>) top left repeat-x;

You can change the positioning by altering "top left" to top/bottom/left/right however you like. The repeat-x repeats the image horizontally along the x-axis, this can be set to:

repeat-x to repeat the image horizontally.
repeat-y to repeat the image vertically.
repeat to repeat the image horizontally & vertically.
no-repeat to use the image once & once only.

Click upload & you are done.
