Is that too dramatic? I wish it was. It's become clear that it's not. It's not a big story like Iraq or missing girls in Aruba (try to find it ANYWHERE but in the blogs), but the consequences to this country and even the world (i.e. pre-emptive war based on LIES) are almost unthinkable. At this stage, I would give the Big D maybe a 30% chance of prevailing.
Why am I so gloomy in the Land of the Free and the Home of the Big Campaign Contributions? It basically comes down to electronic voting. Can we trust it? Absolutely Friggin' NOT. Not as it is presently set up. Can it be changed to provide a secure paper trail that can be counted? Yes, but will it? Odds are heavily against it.
The easiest way would be for Congress to address the issue. But a Republican (Regressive Party as called here at the Iconoclast) controlled congress will likely kill any attempt to fix the problem. And that's because they benefit from RIGGED elections. If you don't think there was some rigging done in the 2004 election, please go back to watching Fox "News" right now. Exit polls, which are historically accurate to within 1/10 of 1%, showed Kerry as the winner in Ohio by
3%, which would have given him the presidency. Yet the
Diebold machines gave it to Bush by
2.5%, 5.5% off what the
Exit Polls said it should be. There were problems in Florida and New Mexico that I know of as well.
He didn't win in 2000.
He didn't win in 2004.
The big loser of course: Democracy. The power of electronic vote rigging is so great that paper fraud is virtually nothing. And no less than the Regressive National Chairman wants to
OUTLAW exit polls. When it comes to electronic vote rigging (EVR), the exit poll is the only canary in the coal mine that we have. EVR can also be stopped at the local level, because that's where the machines
are purchased. There has been a victory in
California in that regard. But it may be just a patchwork of resistance that will only fail because there is too much pressure and money being thrown Diebolds and other manufacturers' way. In North Carolina a court required Diebold (at an advocates request) to make it's software code available to the Board of Elections, even though the Board decided to buy the machines without that legal requirement (state law). The way to fix this immediately and permanently is at the Federal level. Chances of that happening? About those of a Dove Bar thrown into your local volcano. This is going to be an uphill fight in congress (if it's even allowed to take place) since the Regressives benefit enormously from EVR. In Ohio, ALL of the "errors" that came to light favored Bush, not Kerry. Who's gonna want to give that up? Results not heading our way? Head over to keyboard for some creative voting.
We need to do something NOW.
As much as we can before the 2006 elections, when everyone in the House has got it on the line, and a third of the Senate. If the Economy, Iraq and the plethora of Regressive
scandals are as bad as they are now, the Dems should take back the House. And CHECK the exit polls, to see what races they really did win but went to Regressives on the basis of EVR. If it's too widespread and the Dems don't take back the House, it's time to take to the streets, Ukraine style. I hope it never comes down to that, but it's time to start preparing yourself mentally.
