Soap Opera Kråli

, ,

There comes a time in everyone's life when everything just goes all soap opera like, and a bit weird. Catch up with the latest soapy stage in my life here :D

A friend of mine was over from Finland last week, and was staying with another (Finnish) friend in London. It just happens that our mutual London-based friend has an extremely good-looking housemate, whom yours-truly was lucky enough to date and get ditched by not long ago. I shan't go into too much detail about said good-looking woman, suffice it to say that she is awesome, and quite naughty - but looks so innocent. She's the kind of girl who looks and acts like she is completely straight, then sidles up close, tells you that she's not the straightest woman in the world, and traps you with those lovely eyes of hers. I'm not going to go over what happened between us though, not again.

I went to meet my Friend from Finland on the Tuesday. It did cross my mind that The Siren may appear, but thankfully that was wishful thinking/undue worrying on my behalf, and my friend arrived alone, with nothing but a friendly message from The Siren. We had a pretty good day in London, too - we went to the National Gallery and to the Tate Britain gallery. I wanted to track down a couple of paintings by John William Waterhouse: the paintings St Eulalia and The Lady of Shallot are in Tate Britain. Waterhouse painted these romantic pictures of very feminine but often very strong women, and I'm drawn to that. So I think I found my type, there, the strong, independent but feminine women. The type that you see, and think they are straight, and then they suddenly sidle up close to you and trap you with their gaze....

I'm not addicted to Salmiakki - I can quit it any time I want. Nevertheless, my visiting friend had generously brought some over. I'd expected a small box, enough to tide me over, but instead she brought (like) a kilo over! Cool!!! Except that she is a Finn, so she went drinking the night before and completely forgot to bring the salmiakki with her. No big issue. Instead she suggested that she would leave it with our mutual friend, and I could go and see her shortly and collect it. SO. This means there is a kilo of strange foreign candy waiting for me in London, and all I have to do to get it is go and see a friend, and try to avoid the local harpy. A situation which is too surreal and stupid to give credit to, really, it's like one of those ridiculous plots which scriptwriters put in to amuse bored viewers. So I hope it amuses you chaps.

And of course, all the best soap operas have darker plots, with violent, shady men and foolish, weak women, and here is one of the darker storylines. My housemate Louise moved in to where we are about a week after I did. I get one pretty well with Louise. She's recently (last year) broken up with an abusive, violent and dangerous boyfriend, a man who is also somewhat younger than her. Abusive, violent men generally don't take to being ditched well, and he did what any guy in his situation would do: he stalked her. He sends torrents of text messages, he calls and is ignored all the time, and he is known to turn up at the house unwarranted and unexpected, and usually drunk. An evening with Louise can be surreal: every 30 minutes or so her phone starts flashing, and the name of whichever phone-box The Ex is calling from appears on her phone. You can actually track him as he makes his way around the pubs in the town.

Being stalked is not a nice thing. I've been through it before, and I wouldn't really recommend it.

I got home from London at about 9pm, and went to bed shortly afterwards, so I didn't see this happening. It was a pretty heavy night for Louise: The Ex was calling non-stop - she told me later that it was about 30 calls which she had ignored. Eventually he turned up at the house and started throwing stones at the window. So Louise let him in, and he told her the news which he so desperately wanted to tell her: he has gotten a 17 year old girl pregnant.

Louise was devastated, and spent the next day in tears. And The Ex carried on calling and texting and turning up at the house until eventually Louise opened up her arms and took him back and so now she is back with an abusive, violent and dangerous man and all of her friends not least the ones who have to actually live with her just wish that she had the self-esteem to call the police and get rid of him for good, because no woman should have to live through that.

He got arrested on Thursday night because he beat someone up for no particularly good reason. He was out on bail the next day, but fingers crossed he'll go down for a long time. He's in court on the 23rd of this month.

The scriptwriters have seen fit to write some characters out of the script, and we are losing my work colleague Hywel (as seen on Facebook!) and two of my housemates, a young recently married Pakistani couple. I'm sure new characters will be introduced shortly, but I don't think that they will be as good. They never are, are they?

Finnish friend from Finland standing by one of the lions in Trafalgar square on Tuesday. Today is a Saturday and I am at home long enough to write a blog entry and post it, just like that. I have a new internet connection - a third generation mobile modem. It's not overly expensive and pretty impressive as well, and means that I can use the internet in my own room, instead of going down to the living room.
