About Alizee




To understand the background of Alizee, one must be familiar with her proteges, Mylene Farmer and Laurent Boutonnat. Mylene Farmer was a French superstar of the 1980's selling millions of records and producing dozens of grandiose, histronic and provocative videos directed by her principal songwriter, Laurent Boutonnat. Mylene has a seductive, whispery vocal style that made up in atmosphere what it lacked in range. Boutonnat's compositions were as lush musically as his films were visually and together they conquered the French charts for many years.



Mylene spotted a 16 year old singer from Corsica named Alizee at a talent show called "Graines de Star". Seeing her promise, Farmer and Boutannat co-produced an album for her called "Gourmandises". The single from the album, " Moi Lolita" sold 1 1/2 million copies. A follow up single, "L'Alizé" also topped the charts. Still in her teens, the winning team released a second album, "Mes Courants Electriques", which received further success across the English Channel.



Speaking personally, both CDs are sheer French pop heaven to me and are rarely far from my CD player. While Farmer's vocals tend to be stylisticly the same, Alizee is full of little quirks and is almost effortless in her delivery of even the most demanding melodies. As far as the sex kitten appeal, its not really out there despite the Lolita leanings of her handlers. She's just a little too innocent and virginial to be exploited that way and perhaps it is that freshness that makes the combination work.
