My OperaPREVIEW: CRIME STORY

Last week we told you about a new game from Game Insight called Crime Story, which will soon be released onto the Android Market. We’ve had a chance to play on a preview version of the game, and we thought we’d share our thoughts.
The first thing that strikes you about the game is its graphics; for a mobile game they are mightily impressive, and the detailed game environment is a pleasure to explore. The game is comprised of different areas, including docks, residential, and urban. Each has various buildings to enter and explore, and game’s attention to detail is exceptional. Being able to zoom in and out of the action is welcome, and also helps reiterate the scale of the game.
The controls of Crime Story are fairly straightforward, and well-suited to a touchscreen device. The game is easily likened to the point-and-click genre, and movement around the game’s environment and interaction with other characters, is done by tapping the area of object with your finger. This will sometimes bring up an onscreen menu, giving you a choice of actions.
As the title of the game suggests, Crime Story’s tale revolves around the criminal underworld. Your character has come to America in search of their lost brother. In order to find him, you must join a variety of gangs, and work you way to the top by performing tasks, such as racketeering and vandalism. Your influence is determined by your gang affiliation, and getting a gang insignia tattooed on your arm increases your intimidation.
There is a large social element to Crime Story, and you can share your progress through the game via Twitter and Facebook. The game’s currency is gold coins, which are used to buy energy, and can be exchanged for cash. Cash can then be used to buy new weapons and customise your character. It’s anticipated that there will probably be a form of in-app purchasing to make assist in collecting the coins, but this will be confirmed at a later date.
Although the preview version was limited to the early missions, we’ve enjoyed our time with Crime Story so far. There are a few wrinkles to be ironed out, but it’s done enough to grab our attention. So far, the game is only recommended to be played on a handful of devices, which is a bit of a shame, but this may be widened by the time of full release.
