FOLDER AND WISER?

, ,

I've never been a big fan of folders. As the above screenshot shows, I tend to like instant access to my apps. Inspired by this post by Gina Trapani, however, I've decided to try using them for a while. The folders in Android 4.0 do look nice - something that has always put me off using them before.

Here are my screens now, with everything sorted into categories. Using verbs to label the folders makes a lot of sense to me, and I'm interested to see if it'll have a big impact on how I use my phone. Using two taps to access Twitter may not sound a lot, but I guess time will tell if it eventually annoys me.

I have noticed one thing; I've put more apps on the home screens than before - apps that would have sat neglected in the app drawer. Maybe it'll prompt me to use them more? It also means I can resize widgets to make them more practical.

How about you? Do you use folders at all?

The idea sounds good. On Android 2.2 I need two actions to start number of my applications anyways. For example all my camera software shortcuts are on one screen left, and therefore I first need to get there to open them.

Folder idea makes it somewhat easier, because that way I only need to tap twice, not sweep and tap.

But in general this sounds like giving up on the idea of having multiple start screens, and taking step back (or forward) to what it already was on number of mobile phone Operating Systems before Android.

I dont understand the idea of Gina Trapanis blog post. Initially she gave the example that with the given folder names she does not know "Is Instagr.am in Photography or Social Networking?", but in the end she has folders for "Photography" and "Share". So, how is this any better? Is Instagram now Photography or Share? And why couldnt she classify it before?

I don't see it as that. I still have multiple start menus, but am putting them to better use by using the space created by folders for more/bigger widgets.

I don't think her system's perfect, but as long as it makes sense to her, it works.

Yes, I understood that, and that way it works like any system of 7 plus minus 2 items to remember. Clever combination of these folders and home screens probably work better than either of them separately.

Now I'm a big fan of folders and use a couple of applications to give me the layout I want. First up is Folder Organiser, which I use for the folders themselves. It has a handy and simple CSS section that allows me to create simple black transparent folder pop-ups. Secondly I use Desktop Visualizer to put 2x1 widgets on my homepages, each with their own unique image (images are taken from those created for Launcher 7 as they fit beautifully) and link them to one of the folders or core applications I use. The result is something kind of stylistic that is the envy of most who see it and would be even better if I had any artistic talent.

Owning a HTC I'm still stuck on Gingerbread so have the old fashioned folders, but for a whilst I had ADW installed and they use a similar folder style to ICS =- shown here. I loved it. It works just so much more better than the old full screen pop up folders.

Sadly, either HTC Sense has a few bugs in (which is more likely) or ADW doesn't play very well with HTC phones so I removed ADW and no longer use folders.

But hopefully HTC will implement Androids folder style when they eventually update their software and I can enjoy folders again.

A bit OT, but I love your clock weather widget! What is it?

On topic, I really prefer the aesthetics of your screen with the folders. Still waiting on the ICS update for the bionic...looking forward for a usability update street you've used the folders for a bit.

Still using the folders - don't think I could go back now...

It's one of the stock Ice Cream Sandwich backgrounds that came with the Nexus S ICS upgrade, I think.

Here's a version for you:
