BBC Mobile Beta

As much general mobile web news as it is Android news, the BBC are currently trialing a new mobile web page.

While still in Beta (and the mixture of links to new mobile pages, old ones and full web pages show how early the beta version is) this new style focusses on showing as much information as possible on the screen at one time, customising that data according to the users needs and taking full advantage of the higher resolution screens that have come around since the page was first designed.

You can try out the page yourself at the following link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/home/mobilebeta

Personally, I’m very big on mobile versions of sites that I regularly frequent. Everybody who has ever tried viewing a website on his smart phone using the built in browser knows just how awkward it is. You have to zoom in, scroll side to side and up and down just to read the articles. You waste to much time scrolling looking for the latest headlines. Based on the beta design, I believe that BBC’s designers have achieved their goals of providing as much information as possible in the limited screen real estate of a smart phone. I’d like to check out the customization options of this app though. I prefer more headlines and more breaking news on my screen. I hope the menus or categories will just be dropped down. That’s how I’d prefer it.

This is a perfect example of providing convenience to mobile users. As the poster above me mentioned, surfing over the Internet using a mobile phone can be quite a frustrating chore to deal with. Constant adjustment of the page size becomes a nuisance, and you would have to swivel your phone and zoom in, and every other particular concern there is. As far as BBC’s approach to their mobile website is concerned, everything is placed appropriately and you wouldn’t even have to worry about reading all the details. This is what I would consider to be a perfect example of business website design (http://www.sitesuite.com.au/) for mobile phone sites.
