Doing the Google 2-Step

, , ,

Due to the amount of Google products that I use, my Google sign-in details are almost as sacred as my banking details. In the wake of the recent hacking incidents (the PSN attack in particular), I had serious concerns about security.

Although I use a different password for each website/online service that I use, I adopted a “you can never be too careful” attitude, and started using Google 2-Step verification. It’s a system that works very well with your Android phone. After a relatively simple set-up process, you download the Google Authenticator app to your phone. Now whenever I sign into my Google account, it asks me to input a six-digit code generated by the app. It’s a bit like an RSA token, and adds a very welcome level of security.

Here’s a video that explains the system in a bit more detail:

The authentication can be set to last for 30 days, so you don’t have to input the code everytime you log in, which is useful when using computers that you trust. There are procedures in place, should you lose your phone, including nominating another mobile number to text the code to, or a set of codes to be printed out and kept safe.

I’ve been using 2-Step verification for just over month now, and I would recommend anyone that relies on Google products to give it a go. The only real problem I have faced so far is the app-specific password.

Google 2-Step verification doesn’t work for all Google products, and there are some things that need an app-specific password. These are long 16-digit passwords, generated by Google that you have to enter for products like the Picasa Desktop application, or (more importantly) your Android device.

Google state that you only have to type these in once, which is generally true, but every time you log out of these applications, you need to generate and enter a new password. My Desire HD received a firmware update the other day, for example, and in doing so it logged me out of my Android account. To regain access I had to go to a PC, log onto Google (luckily I didn’t need to use the Authenticator app), revoke the old password, and generate a new one.

It was a bit fiddly, but only took a couple of minutes. Am I prepared to do that for the knowledge that my accounts details are that much more secure? The answer is always going to be yes.

Have any of you tried Google 2-Step verification? If so, what are your thoughts?

APP REVIEW: MAGIC HOUR

, , ,

What is it?

Magic Hour is a camera app that enables you to take photos, and apply a plethora of filters to make them really stand out. Here are a couple of examples:

OverjoidWhat we like

  • A huge amount of amazing filters to apply to your photos.
  • It’s quick and easy to create your own filters, or customise existing ones.
  • Users can upload their own filters, which can then be downloaded by others for free. This creates a near infinite amount of filters to choose from.
  • The UI is great; clean, crisp, and user friendly.
  • Being able to quickly compare the original photo and altered one.
  • It’s quick and easy to share your photos with a variety of social networks.
  • Auto Focus is quick, as is the shutter speed. There was hardly any blur with the photos we took, even when the subject was moving.

AnnoidWhat we don’t like

  • The altered photos are only available in a square aspect (see examples above).
  • There are only a limited number of resolutions available.
  • It takes an age to save the photo once it’s been taken – this is even before a filter has been applied.
