GAME REVIEW: RECKLESS RACING 2

,

What is it? It may surprise you to find out that Reckless Racing 2 is the sequel to Polarbit’s hit racing game, Reckless Racing. Viewing the action from a top-down perspective, you must race a variety of cars on dirt and tarmac, in order to be crowned champion. With a hillbilly theme throughout, it’s like redneck Micro Machines.
OverjoidWhat we like

  • There’s so much content on offer! Reckless Racing 2 boasts a comprehensive career mode, over 40 challenges to complete, 24 tracks, 18 cars with a whole host of customisation options.
  • The career mode itself is a great addition. Winning races earns you money to buy new vehicles and upgrades.
  • It looks fantastic, with some of the best graphics and details seen on Android. Although not jaw-droppingly epic, the attention to detail is impressive, and the game is a joy to watch in action.
  • It plays brilliantly, and each car has its own handling and characteristics to conquer.
  • Online multiplayer and leader boards should satisfy your competitive streak.
  • The dynamic difficulty, which constantly changes depending on your ability, means the game is always challenging.
  • There are so many options to customise the controls, so everyone should be able to find one that’s perfect.
  • The “chase camera” is a great perspective, and the cars are easier to control with this view over the standard one.
  • There's a good variety in the game modes; straight races, time trials, and eliminations.
AnnoidWhat we don’t like

  • For all its polish and refinement, it has perhaps lost some of the character of the original. The hillbilly theme seems to be sent into the background, and it’s more of a straight racer.
  • There’s a large download after initial install. This is not a bad thing as such, but the game doesn’t tell you how big the download is before it starts (it’s about 110mb). Useful information for those trying to conserve data allowance!
  • The price. At £3.15, it's one of the more expensive games out there, and although the amount of content justifies it to some extent, the inclusion of further in-app purchases seems a little... cheeky? Granted, you don't have to use this feature, but it's not what you'd expect for a paid game.
  • The game suffers from slow down on occasion, so the less-powerful devices may struggle.
Summary

Reckless Racing 2 improves on the original in every possible way. The amount of content on offer is staggering, and the game looks and plays brilliantly. It’s not just a great racing game; it’s probably the best racing game currently available on Android. This does come at a cost, however, and the price is sure to put a few people off.

The game was reviewed using a Samsung Nexus S running Ice Cream Sandwich, and an HTC Flyer running Honeycomb.

GAME REVIEW: DICE KNOT

,

What is it? Dice Knot is a puzzle game based around the sides of a die. You have to manoeuvre a die around a grid, ensuring that it lands on the target square. The target square has a number on it, and the tricky bit comes in making sure that the die lands on that square with the relevant number facing up.

Throw in barriers and hidden teleports, and the challenge really begins! If that wasn’t hard enough, the dice change theme in each gamemode, replacing the standard numbers with pictures and symbols. This game is not for the faint hearted!

OverjoidWhat we like

  • An innovative and original puzzle game on the Android Market.
  • Simple mechanics, and yet the subtle changes as the game progresses keeps interest.
  • There is a free "lite" version for you to try!
AnnoidWhat we don’t like

  • It’s a really tough game. You really have to know the layout of dice, as there’s no picture/plan to help.
  • The random teleport squares make the game infuriating.
  • The presentation is a little rough around the edges.

GAME REVIEW: U+

,

What is it? If you like suduko, brain teasers, or maths in general, you'll probably like U+. It's a logic game that has you completing a series of mathematical problems in the quickest time possible.

It's a bit like magic squares - you have a limited set of numbers to place in squares in order to make the rows and columns add up to the correct values. Although some are obvious, as the game progresses, you have to use more logic to figure out which numbers go where.

It sounds ever-so-simple, but it really is a challenging game that makes you put your thinking cap on. OverjoidWhat we like

  • It's nice to see a puzzle game on the Market that isn't physics-based.
  • The game really makes you think. It certainly gives your brain a workout.
  • With four difficulty levels, you're sure to find a level that challenges you, and provides you with scope to improve.
  • If you're in to beating your times, the game keeps a very comprehensive record!
  • Simply presented, which suits the game perfectly.
AnnoidWhat we don’t like

  • The timing can be distracting at times. It's sometimes nice just to take the puzzle at your own pace, and the constant reminder that you're being timed can be off-putting.
  • There's little variety in the gameplay.
  • The sound effects are quite annoying (but there is the option to turn these off).
  • At £0.69, the game is relatively expensive for what it is (although the developer has informed us that 10p of every purchase will be donated to a children's hospice in the UK).

GAME REVIEW: WHERE'S MY WATER?

,

What is it? Where’s my Water? is a physics-based puzzler, but what sets it apart from the plethora of physics-based puzzlers available on the Android Market is its unique gameplay and polished presentation. The object of the game is simple: by carving out paths in the dirt, you direct water to a drain pipe, so that a crocodile can have his shower.

It sounds easy enough, but when you add in poison, acid, mines, trips, and switches, getting the required amount of water to complete the level becomes that much more difficult. Getting the water to the drain is enough to complete the levels, but to unlock more, you have to ensure the water passes through rubber ducks scattered around the levels. If beating scores is your game, you get bonus points for time and item collection.

Being a Disney game, Where’s my Water? has a great cartoon feel to it, but the cutesy exterior masks an intelligent and engaging puzzler.

OverjoidWhat we like

  • Clever gameplay that’s varied and challenging. Each new section introduces a new element, which manages to keep the game fresh.
  • The level design is superb: some are single screen puzzles that require a bit of strategy, and others take place over many screens, and are simple races against time. Some of the obstacles and traps are extremely well implemented.
  • It looks great, and the overall presentation is fantastic. Although the “story” isn’t anything special, or particularly interesting, the in-game animation and sprites are good.
  • There are many, many levels, and new ones added by regularly updates. Achievements and easter eggs a plenty!
  • There’s a “lite” version, so you can try before you buy.
  • The full version is only £0.64, which is a real bargain!
AnnoidWhat we don’t like

  • The game is a little easy at times, and it takes a while to get really challenging.
  • The load times can be a bit long.
  • It can be fiddly to navigate around some of the larger levels.

GAME REVIEW: ENCHANTED REALM

,

What is it? Enchanted Realm is a city building game with a magical twist. You must create a thriving kingdom from limited resources, defeating an evil sorceress in the process. You must harvest food, encourage trade, whilst strengthening your castle and kingdom against a wicked Snow queen eager to destroy your realm once more.

You begin with meagre dwellings, and must progress through a series of tasks and objectives in order to develop new buildings, resources, and tools to assist you. Collecting rent provides income, but building structures takes time and energy. As you progress, you will gain items that can be combined to make new tools to help you, and magic to make things a bit easier.

With a story involving Merlin and Morgana, the game is not just about city building, and by completing story-related missions, you can ensure that calm is restored to the kingdom. OverjoidWhat we like

  • Building your kingdom is addictive. There's always something to build and unlock.
  • The storyline adds some depth to the game. It's not all build, build, build!
  • The game has a great tutorial, which eases you into the game and guides you through it.
  • The graphics are nice, and bring the realm to life.
  • Collecting items and making new tools is rewarding.
  • The sheer number of buildings and crops is staggering.
AnnoidWhat we don’t like

  • The controls can be a bit fiddly at times, especially on a phone. This leads to inaccuracy and frustration.
  • The game gets a bit hectic at times, and there's a great deal going on at once.
  • The game is perhaps to directed at times, and lacks freedom.
  • Although the addition of the story is good, it's not executed particularly well. It could be more interesting.
  • Collecting energy, crystals, and harvest takes a long time, which pushes you to use in app purchasing to help. It's a tad demoralising.

GAME REVIEW: TANK RIDERS

,

What is it? Tank Riders is a top-down 3d tank game. Using one thumb to move your tank, and the other to aim and fire your cannon, you must make your way through action-packed levels, destroying anything that stands in your way.

Making your way through the levels is no easy task, however, and there are several obstacles to overcome. Enemy tanks and mortars will try and destroy you, and hidden switches and triggers ensure that you have to use your brain as well as your brawn.

You receive a number of stars depending on how fast and efficiently and accurately you complete each level, and the stars collected go toward unlocking new levels. The single player campaign is accompanied by a frantic multiplayer mode.

OverjoidWhat we like

  • The concept of the game is simple and fun, making it instantly accessible.
  • The different ways to play the game add a certain depth – you can try and speed through the levels, be destructive, or try and collect everything.
  • The game looks great, with fluid animations and colourful levels.
  • The multiplayer is great fun - fast, frantic, and thoroughly entertaining.
AnnoidWhat we don’t like

  • The controls, although simple, are somewhat lacking. Even though there is a choice of two different control schemes, both have faults – tapping to shoot can obscure the screen, and using a second d-pad is fiddly.
  • Due to the controls, manoeuvring and avoiding enemy missiles can be near-impossible on occasion. An option to increase the size of the d-pads would have made this a bit easier.
  • Whilst the action is clear enough, some of the menu buttons are a bit on the small side, making them tricky to access.
  • The multiplayer is good, but you'll struggle to get a game as the servers are a bit quiet...

GAME REVIEW: DROP7

,

What is it? Drop7 is a really hard game to explain. If you think of Tetris and Sudoko having a romantic liaison, Drop7 would be the wonderful love-child.

Numbered discs appear at the top of a grid, and you must drop them down into one of the columns. If the number on the discs represents the number of discs in that column (or row), the disc disappears.

Sounds easy enough, but blank grey discs scatter the grid, and to get rid of these, you have to uncover their number. Every time a numbered disc disappears, it destroys part of a blank disc in an adjacent square. Once the blank disc has been destroyed completely, the number is revealed and the disc can be removed as normal. OverjoidWhat we like

  • The gameplay is unique and challenging. It's refreshing to find a game that makes you think this much without being inaccessible.
  • We love the simple, yet stylish look and feel of the game.
  • The three variety of game modes are great. Normal is perfect for a long play session, whereas hardcore is great when you have a few moments to spare.
  • Pulling off combos (either by skill or by fluke) is oh so satisfying.
  • It's incredibly addictive. You can easily lose hours of your life playing it.
  • The game saves your highest scores, but also your average score - two ways to track your performance!
AnnoidWhat we don’t like

  • The tutorial is pretty bad. Hint to devs: if you use words like "contiguous" when explaining a game, it's going to frustrate a lot of people.
  • The random nature of the game will lead to scenarios where it's impossible not to eventually die. An introduction of powerups and bonuses could put an end to this, whilst keeping the core gameplay.
  • The saving of high scores seems a bit hit and miss at times - can be a bit frustrating as the draw to keep playing is to better yourself each time you play it.
  • Although the game preserves its state if you leave it (like answering a call, etc.), it would be good to have a manual save feature, especially in the longer Normal mode.
  • The game is relatively expensive.

GAME REVIEW: BOOM BUGS

,

What is it? Boom Bugs is another physics-based puzzler that's all about blowing things up. Using a variety of exploding insects, you must destroy all the spiders occupying the levels.

The bomb bugs can't hurt the spiders directly, however, so you must use the environment to crush, squash, and obliterate the 8 legged freaks. Each bug has a unique ability, be it timed explosions, floating up, or lifting objects, and using these to your advantage will see you progress.

You're given a selection of bugs before each level, and time to set them up. Then you press the detonator and watch the carnage unfold!

OverjoidWhat we like

  • The concept is very good, and well-executed.
  • The cutesy exterior hides a strategical and sometimes tough puzzler
  • The variety of bugs is great, and being rewarded for not using them all adds another depth to the game.
  • There are several levels, but not all free... we'll get to that later.
  • The cartoon graphics are great, and look gorgeous at times.
AnnoidWhat we don’t like

  • The star system, which tells you how well you've done in the level, appears to be a bit random at times.
  • Although the game is free, this only gives you the first world (about 18 pretty easy tutorial levels). Unlocking the other levels means buying the full game. This does only cost £0.50, but it would be nice if the Market listing reflected this.

GAME REVIEW: WOLF TOSS

,

What is it? Wolf Toss is a physics-based puzzler that can't helped but be likened to Angry Birds. Replace the birds with a wolf and the catalpult with a cannon, and you're pretty much there.

But to call it an Angry Birds clone is unfair. Whilst the objective is the same (you must hit all the pigs scattered around the level to progress), the way you go about it is quite different.

With multiple cannons scattered around the levels, you have a choice of ways to reach all the pigs. Although each cannon can only be fired a set number of times, you can use them to traverse the levels, being fired from one to the other, Donkey Kong Country style. You can attack the pigs from all angles, and using the different powerups, you can be as destructive or tactical as you like.

OverjoidWhat we like

  • Although it's hard not to compare it to Angry Birds, the game manages to differentiate itself with the multiple launchers.
  • There's a good variety in the levels; small, large, simple, complex - the game keeps fresh as it progresses.
  • The cheat system has promise - earn enough coins and you can unlock a random reward to assist you in a level.
  • With each level having multiple difficulty ratings, there's good replay value. It means there's about 144 levels.
  • The levelling up and coin mechanics are a nice additions, and keep you playing.
  • The "three little pigs" theme is well implemented throughout.
  • It's free!
AnnoidWhat we don’t like

  • Adjusting the angle and power of the cannon can be fiddly at times, especially in the larger levels when zoomed out.
  • The scrolling and looking around levels could be a bit smoother.
  • The larger and busier levels makes the game slow down. We used a Nexus S for this review.
  • The game itself looks lovely, but the menus and graphics outside of this look a bit rough around the edges.
  • You unlock later levels with coins earned during the game. You can buy more coins through in-app purchasing, and as the cost of unlocking levels is quite steep, the temptation is too great. It almost puts you off trying.

GAME REVIEW: WORLD OF GOO

,

What is it? World of Goo is a physics-based puzzle game. Goo balls are on the move, and it's up to you to help them reach their goal. To do this, you must build Goo structures that get the Goo balls to a pipe that sucks them up.

It sounds easy enough, but there are obstacles in your way that you must avoid, and gravity itself is often your biggest enemy. Every bit of Goo you use to build the structure is lost, so it's in your best interest to be economical with your construction; you need to collect a set amount of Goo balls to complete each level, and the more Goo balls you collect at the end, the better!

OverjoidWhat we like
  • It's a beautiful game - the worlds are gorgeous, and the physics and animation are both excellent.
  • The controls are simple, and easily mastered.
  • There's a great variety in the level design. Some are races against time, whereas some or more strategic.
  • The variety of Goo balls adds a further level to the game. Getting to know each type and their advantages is the key to success.
  • Every Goo ball that you collect above the level quota is stored in a separate "playground", where you can build ad hoc structures to your heart's content. A great bonus, with a nice competitive element.
  • There's a free demo version.
AnnoidWhat we don’t like
  • The controls can be a bit fiddly at times - perhaps a game for devices with larger screens.
  • It can be fiendishly difficult at times.
  • It's a relatively expensive game, costing £1.99 (and that's with 40% off!)
  • At nearly 50mb, it's a huge download.
