Android news and app reviews

Overjoid

, , ,

So... Overjoid... a new group within the Opera Community dedicated to Android, that little green fella that's taking the mobile phone world by storm.

To overcome the awkwardness of the first post, I thought I'd share one of the main reason why I chose Android.

Google Maps.

It's the app that gets the best reaction when I'm showing my phone to others, due in part to the free Navigation, Places Directory, Latitude, Street View, and the amazing 3D update that version 5.0 brought.

And what better way to illustrate this on a blog for the Opera Community, than by showing Opera HQ:

Oslo is one of the 100 cities that have the 3D modelling of buildings, and with a quick drag down, the map comes to life:

It looks much more impressive in motion, and it's great for virtual sightseeing.

With all this functionality, Google Maps is certainly one of the reasons why I chose an Android phone. How about you?

There's not a great difference, I don't believe. The maps are drawn with vectors, rather than grids, and there's the 3D effect, and drag rotation. You may already have that on your device - it's worth getting. Should be Google Maps version 5.

OK, thanks, I check it out.

EDIT: Task control says I have version 4414 confused Oh, and application says 4.4.0 (#4414) bigsmile So, I need to test that version 5 then.

EDIT: Feedback of Finnish users at Android Market was not too good. sad For example streetnames in Finnish are still missing from this beta and displayed in Swedish instead faint

It may only be available for certain devices. The 3D feature is only available to supported devices.

What does Overjoid means?

seaempty Friday, January 7, 2011 6:37:36 PM

"Overjoyed" means "very happy", and we changed the spelling to reflect the word "Android". That's how it makes us feel bigsmile

Oh I got it! Thanks.
