I painted this painting this morning. Acrylic paint on loose canvas, approximately 11 x 10 cm. I started with a visual reference and then with imagination. I hope to make it simple and nice. Hope you enjoy it.
I took out this painting from my painting store and I have displayed it on my wall. I like the use of colours and powerful marks on the painting. I like the composition too.
Celebration with Change. Acrylic on canvas. 120 x 100 cm. By Prabhakara Jimmy Quek.
This morning while I was looking for a few paintings in my painting store, I found a portfolio folder. I have forgotten this folder and out of curiosity I took it out so to see what's in it.
I found some Chinese paintings in the folder. These Chinese paintings were painted by me more than 30 years ago when I was a student. These paintings brought me many memories. I painted this cat painting. The cat was one of the two cats that I had at that time. I used to play with them.
I still love this simple artwork. I like the simplicity of the composition of this painting and the minimum use of the ink and brusch strokes.
When learning traditional Chinese painting at that time, I began with copying paintings that my teacher had demostrated to me. I practiced it many times so to learn the controlling of brush strokes and inks.
This birds painting was an example, it was just purely an exercise of copying practise. Whenever I think of Chinese painting, I feel thankful to my teacher Tan Seng Yong for his kindness to teach me painting. May my teacher be blessed and be well and happy.
Below, a painting that I painted in year 1973. I used Chinese ink on rice paper to experiment with the abstract composition of my classmate's dog. This painting was not painted in traditional Chinese painting style of course.
I am delighted to show you one excited painting that I have recently completed. I display it on my wall. I am happy that the painting has been reserved by an art lover. It will go to the art lover's home soon.
Sound of change. 2009. Acrylic on canvas. 62 x 62 cm. By Jimmy Quek Prabhakara. Private collection.
I painted many big paintings and have seldom painted small works on canvas panel like this one. I felt happy and peaceful when I did this small work. The soft toy belongs to my son and the painting was for him. I enjoyed painting this small painting that day.
I have painted some small paintings in the last few years. These are acrylic on canvas with size of 12 x 12 inches, or 10 x 10 inches, or slightly bigger sizes. Here a video of about 2 minutes in which you could view more than 80 paintings. Hope you enjoy my works.

I am happy to meet Sayadaw Pannathami at my home this afternoon. He came with an attendant. I edited a short video of an One Day Meditation Retreat for him upon his request. Below short video is the edited version to share it with you.
The Panditarama Sydney Meditation Centre (PSMC) was established in February 2000. Currently Sayadaw U Pannathami is the abbot of the meditation centre. He has been a Buddhist monk and teaching mediation globally for over 20 years. This meditation centre in Sydney was formed for the elderly people to meditate anytime nearby and also for working people to meditate on the weekends. The centre also accepts meditators worldwide and provide them with food and lodging free of charge in addition to lectures on Vipassana meditation. PSMC warmly welcome any Dhamma friends, Buddhist or non-Buddhist who want to experience the Dhamma. The centre’s aim is to promote the teaching of Theravada Buddhism particularly the practice of Satipatthana Vipassana meditation in the tradition of Mahasi Sayadaw (Satipatthana Vipassana) of Burma. It is a non-profit organisation.
I donated one acrylic painting as a form of support to PSMC. I feel that it is a lovely painting and I hope it will go to a loving home of an art lover in Sydney soon. Kindly contact Panditarama Sydney Meditation Centre (PSMC) for acquisition of this painting.

A friend retuned some books to me last week. One of the books was an art book: Change 20 Singapore Artists, A Decade Of Their Work. This book had been with my friends for the last 5 years.
This is a 240 page coffee-table edition featured 220 full colour plates and 21 colour portraits of the Singapore Artists. They are Teo Eng Seng, Ng Eng Teng, Thomas Yeo, Yeo Siak Goon, One Kim Seng, Ng Yak Whee, Wan Soon Kam, Prabhakara Jimmy Quek (myself), Teng Nee Cheong, Siew Hock Meng, Low Puay Hua, Leo Hee-Tong, Ghoo Keng Kwang, Lee Boon Wang, Kuan Soong, Lee Hock Moh, Tay Bak Koi, Tan Choh Tee, Foo Chee San and Ang Ah Tee. (A photo of the art book printed with my paintings.)
This book was at that time an exciting volume documented the above mentioned 20 selected artists in Singapore, the book traced their development and it offered rare insight into their creative output of remarkable diversity of styles and media which was best represented the Singapore art scene in 1991.
I had a few good browses of the book since the day it was returned to me. The aerial view painting featured there reminded me of my aerial view paintings that I had painted late 80's and early 90's. Aerial View was one of the subject I loved to create at that time. (One of my Aerial View paintings titled Golden Land 1995 was collected by the Singapore Art Museum.)
I felt that I still love painting Aerial View in my heart. So without delay I worked on two small 8" x 8" empty canvases that I had. I enjoyed the play of colours that creating space and depth on the surface of the paintings. Below a photo of the paintings that I have painted this week. Aerial View 1 & 2. 2009. Acrylic on canvas. 8 x 8 inches. By Jimmy Quek Prabhakara.
Quite often people ask me why don’t I teach painting. After I told them I taugh in art classes and conducted workshop before, they encouraged me to teach so to share my artistic skills and experiences to the needed. So I decided to make myself available for a few hours for teaching, to share my painting experience and skills to those who wish to learn from me, or for those who like to paint for fun and to enjoy art making, for those who appreciate art and to enhance life with art.
I have worked out the Painting Courses and a website for that. This is a weekly private painting session/tuition at my working space. Started from first week of April 2009, currently limited to 3 persons (adults) at each session. Courses available are:
1. Basic Acrylic Painting - This course is for beginners. 2. Acrylic Painting for Fun - This course is for those who like to do acrylic painting for fun and to enjoy the process of art making. 3. Acrylic Painting for Improver - This course is for those who wish to improve his painting. 4. Painting Session for Art Lovers - This is for those who wish to continue receiving guidance from me after completed any of the above sessions.
If happens that you are interested in these art sessions and wish to have more information, do feel free to click here for the art class/art sessions website, for information like time schedule, fee, materesials needed, inquiry and registreation.
Three of my paintings had been acquired and installed at Singapore Embassidor Residence in Manila early this year. This is one of the ways promoting Singapore artist and his art works in other country by Singapore Government. Here, a photo of one of the 3 paintings, I took this photo when the painting was still with me.
Morning Meditation. Acrylic on canvas. 102 x 76 cm. Coll: Ministry collection.
I painted this painting in year 2003 when I thought of working out a painting with Bodhi Tree, with a mood of calm, serenity and peaceful effects. I visited Bodhigaya in India, where there was a big Bodhi Tree. It was a serene and peaceful morning. People meditated arround the Bodhi Tree. People believe that the Buddha attained his enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree at this place. I though it would be a good idea to paint a painting that comes from this memory. I did a small sketch study before I started working on this painting. I hope to achieve a calm and peaceful effects with pictorial elements of tree, a silhouette of pagoda behind the tree, silhouettes of people meditating in this painting.
This painting is collected by the Singapore National Library Board. I learned that it is currently displayed at Marine Parade Library office near the entrance at B1 level. This photo shows the painting was with me at home before the acquisition.
